  • To be considered for admission to the graduate program, every student must comply with the following four requirements:
  • Complete 21 semester hours of work in history, including a course on historical research, with a 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Earn an undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or better (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Submit an essay of 250 to 500 words describing his or her interests in history and why he or she wishes to earn an M.A. degree.
  • Have two letters of recommendation sent to the Chair of the Graduate Program Committee. (Requirement "4" is waived for any student who has earned a B.A. or B.S. in history at UNOmaha with an entire undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better.)
  • The Graduate Program Committee may chose to admit provisionally any student who does not meet all of the above requirements, with the understanding that all conditions for unconditional admission must be met before HIST 8010 or 9100 may be taken.
  • Students who have taken no undergraduate course in historical research and writing must take History 3930 (Historical Research) during the first two semesters of their enrollment. This course, required of all undergraduate history majors at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, seeks to develop two skills essential to all historians: the ability to write clearly and to do critical and thorough research. Students who lack these skills may anticipate serious problems in their studies.

The student of history may draw upon the subject matter and methods of many academic disciplines. Thus, social history employs the methods of the social sciences, including quantitative analysis, in examining social movements and issues in the past; Psychohistory utilizes the approaches of psychology in the study of the behavior of historically significant individuals and groups; and the development of the various areas of human intellectual and cultural activity, for instance the arts and sciences, are studied to inform us of how and why people have thought as they did.

    Introduction
‘God for Harry, England and Saint George!’. Shakespeare’s famous rallying cry in Henry V was made in the presence of Welsh, Irish and Scottish soldiers, equating the interests of England and the English crown with the peoples of the British Isles. Recent historians have challenged the old ‘Whig’ history of triumphal Britishness. In its place a lively debate has grown up over the creation of Great Britain and the presence of multiple regional and national identities within that political state. This module studies national and regional identities in Britain between 1536 (Union between England and Wales) and 1707 (Union between England and Scotland), examining in particular the role of Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century and Civil War in the seventeenth century. The aims of this module are to investigate the concepts of regional and national identity, and to consider the nature of state formation and the significance of colonialism in Ireland and America in relation to regional and national identity. The intended learning outcomes of this module are:
    • a knowledge of current historiographical debates about the formation of Britain as a political and cultural entity, and the inter-relationship of region, nation and social class, in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

In the absence of this, he warns, we risk the twilight of a harmonious British society, diminished pride in British institutions and national identity, and competing and conflicting separatist ethnic, racial, and cultural claims. The Twilight of Britain will be of interest to general readers and those interested in modern Britain and Europe, as well as to sociologists, political scientists, and philosophers. Author’s Abstract The influence of human nature and psychological distancing on the toleration of diversity are discussed. It is argued that toleration should not necessarily be seen as being a unilateral and moral virtue arising from praiseworthy motives. A case is made for toleration to be employed primarily in an instrumental role, namely, as an enabling process for negotiation based on reciprocity and mutual trust, to resolve the differing objectives and values arising from the potential conflicts in a culturally diverse society. After The Civil Wars: English Politics and Government in the Reign of Charles II by John Miller (Longman) The civil wars had a traumatic effect on the English people: memories of bloodshed and destruction and the ultimate horror of the execution of Charles I continued to be invoked for decades afterwards. It is often argued that the political and religious fissures created by the wars divided English society irrevocably, as demonstrated by the later bitter conflict between the Whig and Tory parties.

    HISTORY
HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES LIBRARY Bibliographer - Kathleen Toomey History of the Collection Current Collection Development Primary source materials in the form of archival documents or of private letters and papers are increasingly available in published form, often as microforms, and almost invariably at extremely high prices. These primary sources are at the core of the discipline, and are essential not only for research but for the instruction of undergraduates. Primary sources are given a very high priority and are selected on an "at need" basis. In order to avoid unnecessary or inadvertent duplication of costly primary source materials, it is library policy to ascertain whether the proposed title is available at or on order for another Montreal academic institution, or the Center for Research Libraries, before ordering. Academic Programmes and Liaison The History Department offers a full range of courses at the undergraduate level as well as courses and seminars of relevance to the master's and doctorate degrees. The Department shows a particular strength in European and North American History. The responsibility for the development and management of the history collection, as defined in this policy, devolves on the history bibliographer. Communication with the Department of History is arranged ordinarily, through the Chair of its departmental library committee.
