Country Flag ... Travel Warning History In the earliest known period of its history, the region now called Tunisia was part of the Carthaginian Empire. According to tradition, Phoenician traders founded the city of Carthage in 814 BC at a location slightly northeast of the site of modern Tunis. In subsequent centuries Carthage became the center of a mighty empire that dominated most of northern Africa and intermittently ruled the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula, Sardinia, and parts of Sicily. Beginning in 264 BC Carthage clashed with the expanding Roman Empire in a series of bloody struggles known as the Punic Wars.

Its northern tip is only 137 kilometres from Sicily, Italy, a part of Europe. Both northern and eastern Tunisia border the Mediterranean Sea. Tunisia is part of the Arab world, the Mediterranean area, and Africa. Almost all Tunisians speak Arabic and follow an Arab way of life. For hundreds of years, trade routes have connected Tunisia to Africa south of the Sahara. France controlled Tunisia from 1881 until Tunisia became independent in 1956. Tunisia shows many French influences. Tunis is its capital and largest city.

Tell us something about the country you are from.

I'm from Tunisia, which was known in the past as 'Ifriquia' In fact, it gave its name to the continent 'Africa'. It has been well known as a peaceful and hospitable country since the time of Hannibal and Carthaginian Empire. Our citizens are one of the most open-minded on the continent.
What 3 things do you value most?
Respect of human rights, Family, Honesty
How will you follow the World Cup? On national TV What do you wear when you support your team? When I support our team, I forget my head and listen to my heart. I even forget my age. So, I wear our team’s colours and especially our traditional ‘Chechia’ which is a red had famous throughout the region. (Tommy Cooper wore one just like that!) How far will your team get and why? Our teams adventure might end abruptly but with a bit of luck we could get through to the second round. As the team’s managers are from Tunisia, it’s certain they will do their utmost to brandish the Tunisian flag high in the Asian sky. Our players didn’t play well in the African Cup and so they owe themselves and the people of Tunisia a better performance.

The Culture and People of Tunisia
Tunisia, the northernmost country of Africa has for over 3000 years witnessed the passage of Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Turks, Spanish and French. They came as fugitive's or adventurers, to conquer or to claim, warriors and missionaries, traders and farmers each leaving a part of their story in stone or mosaics, on hills of Carthage and the threshold of the Sahara. This heritage, Tunisia's greatest wealth has been held in trust and preserved in hundreds of sites and museums from the small Punic museum in Utica to the vast collections of the prestigious National Museum of Bardo. Most Museums are closed on Mondays, whereas many on-site archeological museums and ruins are open all week.

Our journey through Tunisia was full of discoveries and exotic. The magic and charm of the Arabian world cast a spell on us from the very first day: Pulsating life and oriental flair in cities like Sousse, encounter with the millenniums old history in Karthago, Beduins and camels in the sandy desert, cave dwellers in Matmata and subtropical vegetation in the oases and at the Mediterranean coast with the broad sandy beaches.....

Settled in the 12th cent. B.C. by Phoenicians, Tunisia became (6th cent. B.C.) the center of the powerful city-state of Carthage, which was destroyed by Rome in 146 B.C. Taken by the Vandals (5th cent. A.D.) and the Byzantines (6th cent.), the Arabs conquered Tunisia in the 7th cent., and the Berber population was converted to Islam. The area came under a succession of Muslim rulers, reaching its peak under the Berber Hafsid dynasty (c.1230–1574). In the late 16th cent. Tunisia was seized by the Ottoman Turks, and as one of the Barbary States it became a stronghold of pirates, on whom the treasury depended for several centuries. European intervention began in the 19th cent., and in 1881 Tunisia became a French protectorate. Nationalist agitation, which first surfaced in the 1920s, became intense after World War II, and independence was achieved in 1956.
In 1957 the country became a republic, with Habib Bourguiba as president. Under Bourguiba, who was elected president-for-life in 1975, Tunisia was a moderate Arab state, following a generally pro-Western foreign policy; support for a negotiated settlement with Israel strained the country's relations with its Arab neighbors, however. Domestically, Bourguiba emphasized modernization and planned economic growth. In 1981 he authorized the legal formation of opposition political parties, indicating a possible shift in the direction of liberal democracy.
