POPULAR AND FORMAL ISLAM, AND SUPRA-LOCAL RELATIONS The highlands of northwestern Tunisia, 1800-1970 Wim van Binsbergen homepage 1. Introduction In recent years anthropologists have paid considerable attention to North African popular religion and to local saints as one of its main aspects. North African religious studies are in a transitory state in that anthropologists only recently have come to explore a field of enquiry which hitherto had been mainly worked by historians and Arabists. Coupled to the fact that, with such pioneers as Westermarck , Montagne, Evans-Pritchard, Peters and Bergue, the anthropology of North Africa made a comparatively late start in general (as compared with e.g. sub-Saharan Africa, or Oceania), this goes some way to explain why anthropological studies of North African region have tried to do rather too much. Instead of presenting a thorough descriptive analysis of specifically religious institutions, they tend to formulate highly abstract interpretative models which attempt to bring to bear an only cursorily-described religious system upon such topics as the variability and versatility of Islam , theories of segmentation

Tunisia will blow your mind with its history . In 10th century BC, Tunisia's coast settled by Phoenicians. Carthage rose to power in the 6th century BC but Rome conquered it ( 2nd century BC ) , it became 1 of the granaries of Rome . Vandals held it (5th century AD )and Byzantine ( 6th century ) Arabs took it over in the 7th century , which found Al Qayrawan. The area was known as Ifriqiya and the Berber population was converted to Islam . Successful Muslim dynasties ruled , intrepid by Berber rebellions . The reigns of the Aghlabids ( 9th century ) and of the Zirids from 972, Berber followers of the Fatimids, were especially prosperous . When the Zirids angered the Fatimids in Cairo in 1050, they later ravaged Tunisia. The coasts were briefly held by the Nor mans of Sicily in the 12th century. Almohadcaliphs of Morocco conquered the Almohads in 1230 -1574 , under whom Tunisia prospered. Spain seized many of the coastal cities in the last years of Hafsids, but they were recovered for Islam by the Ottoman Turks . Tunisia attained virtual independence under its Turkish governors, the byes. A pirate stronghold ( see Babary States ) in 1705, lasted until 1957.

Tunis - History Roman Baths
  • Over 3000 years witnessed the passage of Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Turks, Spanish and French. They came as fugitive s or adventurers, to conquer or to claim, warriors and missionaries, traders and farmers each leaving a part of their story in stone or mosaics, on hills of carthage and the threshold of the Sahara. During the Arab conquest of Ifriqiyya in the 7th century, Tunis was re-born on the ancient site of Tunes. The destruction of Carthage was a deciding factor in its renewal. It wasn't long before Tunis was equipped with port facilities.
  • For the brief period during the reign of the Aghlabids, between 894 and 905, Tunis was the capital of Ifriqiyya.
  • The Fatimid Dynasty and the Zirid Dynasty which followed it ruled over Tunis from 909 until 1057; Mahdia and Kairouan were their respective capitals.
  • In 1160 the Almohaves (Berber sovereigns inspired by Shi'ism) made Tunis their capital city.
  • Between 1228 and 1574, Tunis was the capital city of the Hafsids, a Maghrebian dynasty which emerged from the Almohaves. This period was the peak of the history of Tunis.
  • When it was taken over by the Ottomans in 1574, Tunis lost its status as capital. It went through a period of commercial prosperity thanks to its merchant communities and piracy (when the latter was enjoying its golden age). In the 17th and 18th centuries, under the Husseinids, it experienced intense architectural activity and attained the appearance that it conserves to this day.

RUSPINA USA HOME PAGE - WELCOME It's been more than one hundred years since the Belkhirias opened their first olive oil mill in the sunny Mediterranean country of Tunisia, located sixty miles south of Sicily. We've been cultivating trees and producing gourmet olive oil ever since, always refining our knowledge while maintaining traditional methods. Now, the Belkhirias of the United States are proud to offer Ruspina, a premium extra virgin olive oil, to the American market. Available directly from the producer ( Medagro ), our product reflects five generations of family commitment. Ruspina extra virgin olive oil is extracted from the finest selected olives of the Sahel region, where olive oil has been produced since before it was a part of the Roman Empire. It is cold pressed the old-fashioned way, using granite mill wheels to crush the olives. The natural characteristics of the oil are preserved, resulting in a rich golden color, intense aroma, and delicate flavor. This is a classic dipping oil. It is also an elegant, healthful ingredient for dressings, sauces, and all types of everyday cooking. Here you can learn more about our company and our products. Ruspina Olive Oil is available in a variety of sizes and quantities. We sell our product by the container, bottled or in bulk, using your label or ours.
