TURKISH LANGUAGE
Background The Turks were one of many linguistic and ethnic groups within the Ottoman Empire. Members of the military, civil and religious elite conducted their business in Ottoman Turkish dialect, a mixture of Arabic, Persian, and Turkish. Arabic was the primary language of religion and religious law, while Persian was the language of art, literature. and diplomacy. Ottoman Turkish borrowed vocabulary words as well as entire expressions and syntactic structures from Arabic and Persian. Pure Turkish was used primarily by the lower class and illiterate. It was generally not used in writing. Ottoman Turkish, on the other hand, was the language of the educated elite, in both written and oral communications . When Mustafa Kemal Ataturk came to power in 1923, he instituted sweeping reforms in Turkey. One of these reforms dealt with language. The goal was to introduce a language more Turkish, modern, practical, precise, and easier to learn than the old language. The two basic elements of this language reform were the adoption of a new alphabet and the purification of the language. Beginning in May, 1928, numbers written in Arabic were replaced with their Westem equivalents. In November of that year, the Grand National Assembly approved the new Roman (or Latin) alphabet, which had been devised by a committee of scholars including several American linguists.

Absolutely, it was not only the best match of the quarterfinals but also of the tournament. The game drove us into a great excitement. Again everybody took their lucky seats, wore lucky shirts, came together to watch the match. There is no need to talk about the empty streets or the roads. People just focused on the match.
When the match started it was obvious that every Turkish player on the field had the win-face. They had nothing other than winning in their minds. The team really played well and made a lot of goal attempts. Every player did their best except Hakan Sukur. He drove us mad when he missed the chances. Everybody was happy and applauded the coach when he was getting out of the field.
Ilhan Mansiz, the fabulous striker, the Turkish samurai, got us into another world when he scored the golden goal. Some people say that the goal was diamond. He proved what a great scorer he is.
You should see the beauty of the happiness. Just one minute after the match everyone was in Taksim Square, the heart of Istanbul. Empty streets soon filled by people, roads were full of Turkish flagged cars. Everyone had a smiling face.

Turkish Carpets
Carpet weaving has long traditions in Turkey. Turkish carpets are of excellent quality and design and are rivalled only by Persian carpets. This page will look at the carpet weaving tradition among the peoples of Turkey and Central Asia: how the carpets are made, what determines their value, and some of the historical and cultural context within which this folk art has blossomed.

Marco Polo noted the fine quality of Turkish carpets in his writings in 1271. A large number of Turkish and Persian carpets were being sent to Europe as early as the 16th century. The increased trade relations with Europe and the strong western orientation of some of the Ottoman emperors clearly influenced some production and designs. Still, carpet weaving has been around a very long time and is an established tradition in the fabric of life in the carpet producing areas of Turkey, Persia, Turkestan and the Caucasus.
The 1949 discovery of the Pazryk carpets established that carpet weaving has existed in the area at least since the 4th century BC. Historically, the Turks moved to present day Anatolia from Central Asia, their carpet weaving traditions following them westward to Turkey and Persia, where they ultimately reached their highest expression. Similarly, influences from the Far East reached Europe primarily through Constantinople, which was the gateway to Europe as well being the final stop in the so called Silk Route, the long trade route that ran from China through Central Asia to Anatolia.

By Roger Hardy
BBC regional analyst The crisis that has prompted Turkey's early elections, and the demise of Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit's government, throws a harsh light on the underlying weaknesses of Turkish political culture.
Perhaps what is different this time is that external pressures for change are so intense
It is a culture whose abiding features are paternalism and patronage, a culture where ageing patriarchs continue to hold sway. It is a culture apparently caught between hardline nationalists on one side, and Islamists on the other, and where the parties of the centre have never managed to get their act together. It is a culture where the military have become an alibi for the mistakes of the politicians, who can always say: "If we make a mess of things, the generals will save the day." None of this is news to Turkish voters, who have long been disenchanted with their self-seeking politicians.
