It is still in the form of a draft which needs contributions and criticism by all those concerned with the subject. Introduction During the reign of the Motherland Party (M. P., ANAP in its Turkish initials) governments (1983-1991) in Turkey, the hegemony of the state-favored private capital began to erode with the rise of new entrepreneurs who have small or middle town origin and religious outlook. This process has led to important economic and social changes and differentiation within religious segments. As a result, Islamic oriented middle class has realized an important capital accumulation. In this process, tarikat s and cemaat s played important roles by channeling the communal solidarity and consciousness into economic activities in the form of favor and support to the entrepreneurs associated with the tarikat and cemaat . Reciprocal relationships between government circles and the tarikat and cemaat s facilitated the integration of these socio-religious institutions into modern economic activities. Nevertheless, together with the capital accumulation of Islamic oriented segments, consumption habits of religious masses began to transform into bourgeoisie consumption patterns. The Role of Media in Integrating Muslims into Consumer Culture In terms of consumption of images as commodity, the emergence of "Muslim media" constitutes another impressive case. Muslim media has emerged with the claim to transmit the Islamic message to the masses and to confront the negative image presented by the mainstream media against the Islamic oriented segments. Although the Muslim media, whose center of gravity is the tarikat and cemaat television and radio channels and publications (dailies, weeklies, and monthlies), emerged as a counter-balance against the mainstream media, it has been an important source to introduce modern life-styles to the masses. Thus, it began to take on the role of integrating religious segments into consumer culture. Consequently, "Islamization" of an aspect of modern life leads to selective adoption of the prevailing stylistic features of consumption culture. The image of the "acceptable Muslim" presented by the "Muslim media" is the one who dresses with the favorite brands and behaves in a "civilized" manner (re-stylization of Muslim identity). Like television channels of mainstream media, talk-shows started appear on "Islamic" television channels which contributes to the presentation of a mediatic/artistic personality as an ideal type. This ideal type reflects a modern consumer identity whose consciousness is under the influence of the process of production and consumption. According to Yýldýrým, a review of the Islamic periodicals, television channels, and radio stations will show how consumerism began to be widespread among the religious segments.

CULTURE Cultural heritage of mankind Kommagene Kingdom Dances and Costumes Cultural Heritage of Mankind Adiyaman region is one of the earliest settled areas of the world. Based on stone and bone fragments found in the area, it is believed a people called Hurri populated this region starting about 5,000 before the Common Era. From bronze artifacts discovered in many sights it is believed that the Hurris made the transition to the Bronze Age about 3,000 before the Common Era. Archeological digs reveal that Hurris populated an area ranging from the current Malatya to Gaziantep. Around 1350 before the Common Era this region came under the rule of Mittanis, who like the Hurris were Arian in origin. The evidence for this is based on artifacts discovered from the Mittani king Tusratta’s tomb. The region was under the control of many peoples throughout its history. Chronologically, it was Mittani Kingdom 1300 before the Common Era, then Hittite Empire until 1200, Phrygian Kingdom until 700, Medes and Persia until 334, Macedonia until 169, Kommagene Kingdom until 72 after the Common ear. Then followed the control of the Roman Empire until 395, Byzantine Empire until 670, Emevi Caliphate until 758, Abbasid Kingdom until 926, then again Byzantines until 1114, Eyyubians until 1298, Seljuk Turks until 1516 and finally the Ottoman Empire until 1923. Other Names Used for Adiyaman: Adiyaman is the name used for the province since the establishment of the Turkish Republic. The name is a derivative of the phrase, Vadi-i Leman (Pretty Valley) which over time through permutations of pronunciation resulting in Adiyaman.

Dr. Racho Donef July 2, 2000 Last year, as some of you may know, a conference entitled "Portraits of Christian Asia Minor" was held at Macquarie University.The Conference was attended by the Turkish Consul who, reportedly, after the conference requested a meeting with Senator John Nimrod, from the U.S., who is also, President of the Assyrian Universal Alliance. The Consul expressed his regret for what had happened in the past, explaining that the Turks are trying to turn a new page with the Assyrians. He advised that he is personally working to establish contact and good relations with the Assyrians.[1] I am reporting this here because I think it is important that a representative of the Turkish government expresses these thoughts, and I thought it would be preferable to start on a positive note. Nevertheless, no major changes have been noted in the Turkish government’s attitude towards the Assyrian since then. Before we examine the situation of the Assyrians-Surianis in Turkey, it is important to first look at the political and policy framework in which they lived. When the Turkish Republic was established in 1923 the new state inherited a mosaic of ethnic groups. With the exception of the Kurds, none of the ethnic minorities showed any political aspirations. The number of Arabs in Turkey remained small until the annexation of Hatay by Turkey, in 1939, and the smaller Muslim groups, such the Lazes and Circassians, had neither the desire for territorial independence nor the capacity to attain it.

Co-operatives seem to have more active members, who constitute around 11 per cent of the population. There should be some overlap between those two figures, for there must be some multiple memberships. However, the extent of multiple memberships is impossible to determine. An informed guess is that one out of every 7 or 8 citizens belongs to some kind of voluntary association in Turkey. Membership in various types of associations in Turkey, except for political parties, is relatively low. The lack of enthusiasm in joining voluntary associations may partly be explained by a culture that is deeply distrustful in interpersonal terms. Indeed, field surveys indicate that more than 90 per cent of the Turkish voting age population declares that their fellow citizens cannot be trusted. When compared with the findings of the World Values Surveys, Turkish interpersonal trust rates rank at the bottom of a list of 43 countries, with Brazil. Lack of interpersonal trust undermines any effort at establishing and sustaining partnerships, whether they are economic, political or cultural. A milieu deeply penetrated by interpersonal distrust forestalls the development of associability and mass membership in associations.

He said that "our people like Kirkpinar fighting. [note: Kirkpinar is the place where annual wrestling tournaments are held] They don't like opera and ballet; hand to hand fighting, that is part of the daily culture of our people!" Goodness, he's quite right, the good fellow. We have a society in which we identify with wrestlers, smeared with out from head to foot, who grab one another brutally by the neck or waist to throw the other down on the grass, a society that enjoys these brutal punch-ups but doesn't like opera or ballet.
