Turkmenistan seeks to exploit both gas and geography by David Nissman After becoming independent in 1991, Turkmenistan quickly soughtto take its place in the world as a country like any other. Morethan any of the other post-Soviet successor states in CentralAsia, Turkmenistan had both the resources (three trillion cubicmeters of natural gas reserves) and the location (next to Iran)to do so. Indeed, geography may be more important than gas, forTurkmenistan sits at the junction of a north-south axis linkingMoscow and the Middle East, and an east-west axis linking Europe,Central Asia and the Far East. The North-South Axis In December 1994, Niyazov told Moscow's

by Michael P. Noonan A month into the war on terrorism, criticism of the Bush administration has begun to mount. Critics on the left are decrying the loss of innocent lives; critics on the right are asking why more is not being done. Additional tensions arise over the question of whether the United States and Britain should continue the conflict through the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. And concerns grow over whether the Northern Alliance is the ally the United States needs on the ground. To date the combination of aerial bombardment, Northern Alliance ground assaults, and the deployment of a small number of American and British special operations personnel is not producing noticeable results in defeating the Taliban and al-Qaeda. Recent statements by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld suggest that the introduction of American and allied ground troops is now on the table. As the harsh Afghan winter approaches, however, the introduction of large numbers of ground troops may not be necessary to ensure victory. A limited but direct approach may plant the seeds for victory in Afghanistan come spring. The Geography Of War Afghanistan's demographics also make matters difficult. According to CIA figures, its population of roughly 27 million people is made up of the Pashtun (38 percent), Tajiks (25 percent), Hazara (19 percent), Uzbeks (6 percent), and other minor ethnic groups (12 percent). The Taliban is composed mainly of the Pashtuns, who also make up a sizeable population across the border in Pakistan. The Taliban in fact emerged from the religious schools in the Peshawar region of northern Pakistan. The Northern Alliance conversely is predominantly composed of Tajiks, Hazaras, and Uzbeks. This explains Pakistan's sensitivity toward the non-Pashtun Northern Alliance faction and its years of tacit and covert support for the Taliban. Simply put, Islamabad fears a state not aligned with its interests as its northern neighbor.

Geography
Turkmenistan shares borders with Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the east, Afghanistan to the south-east and Iran to the South. To the west is the Caspian Sea. Nearly 80% of the country is taken up by the Kara-Kum (Black Sand) desert, the largest in the CIS. The longest irrigation canal in the world stretches 1,100km (687 miles), from the Amu-Darya River in the east, through Ashgabat, before being piped the rest of the way to the Caspian Sea.

Religion Predominantly Sunni Muslim with a small Russian Orthodox minority. Turkmenistan shares the Central Asian Sufi tradition. Climate The summers are warm to hot but the heat is made more bearable by the low humidity. The winters are cold but generally dry and sunny over most of the region.

by Michael P. Noonan November 5, 2001 Michael P. Noonan is a research fellow on American defense policy at the Foreign Policy Research Institute. 71. Natural And Geographic Conditions
the economic, political, and distribution hub of Soviet Central Asia, Uzbekistanborders Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and turkmenistan.
http://www.umid.uz/Main/Uzbekistan/Geography/geography.html
General Information Uzbekistan has an area slightly larger than that state of California, and is one of two countries in the world that has the dubious honor of being doubly landlocked. (Goods must pass through two other countries to reach a port, the only other country which shares this trait is Liechtenstein.) Traditionally the economic, political, and distribution hub of Soviet Central Asia, Uzbekistan borders Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. The majority of Uzbekistan is desert steppe broken by fertile oases along the banks of two great rivers, the Amu Darya and Syr Darya. Uzbekistan has dry winters and no more than eight inches of rainfall per year, but its hot, dry summers extending from May to October, and water for irrigation produce excellent growing conditions for crops such as cotton, tobacco, fruits, and vegetables. The fertile Ferghana Valley boasts 6 million people, including large minorities of ethnic Kyrgyz, Tajiks, and Russians. The Ferghana Valley is split between three countries: Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, and is home to a very diverse ethnic mix. The Ferghana Valley produces a major share of the country's cotton and grain crops and contains numerous manufacturing plants, as well as natural gas and oil fields. Uzbekistan's central region consists mostly of desert, broken by the oases of the Zarafshan River, Qarshi Steppe, and Surkhandarya River. This region is best known for the ancient Silk Road cities of Samarkand and Bukhara, which together claim more than 600,000 inhabitants and comprise the heart of Uzbekistan's tourism industry. Central Uzbekistan is also home to the mining center of Navoi and contains the majority of Uzbekistan's gold and other mineral deposits, as well as the largest natural gas and oil fields. Irrigation along the Zarafshan and other rivers provides a basis for agriculture.

Turkmenistan
Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Annexed by Russia between 1865 and 1885, Turkmenistan became a Soviet republic in 1925. It achieved its independence upon the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. President NIYAZOV retains absolute control over the country and opposition is not tolerated. Extensive hydrocarbon/natural gas reserves could prove a boon to this underdeveloped country if extraction and delivery projects can be worked out.
