Visiting John Tyler's Grave
Here I am at John Tyler's gravesite in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. See President Monroe's sarcophagus behind me? President Tyler's grave is located at the ridge of the same hill where Monroe was re-interred. At the time of his death, Tyler had been elected to the Confederate Senate in effect, he was a leader of a government in rebellion to that he led as Commander in Chief, and so his Richmond burial was in land that at least he considered non-U.S. territory (the only such President). The fact that the Union won the Civil War allowed Lincoln's point-of-view that the Southern states never actually seceded to prevail, so even the nationality of his burial plot was denied him in the end. A far more important piece of information about Tyler concerns his behavior when he became the first man ever to be ushered into the Presidency by the death of his predecessor. Contemporaries in government called Tyler "His Accidency" and were insistent that he was only the "Acting President" and that his powers in that role were limited and subservient to the Congress. Although the Constitution did not explicitly say so, Tyler was adamant that he succeeded to the office, including its title, duties, and responsibilities, when President Harrison died. We owe to Tyler's determined (and embattled) stand on this point the fact that every later Vice President who found himself elevated to the highest office in the land has been able to use all the powers and privileges necessary to the function of that office.

64. Dead Presidents: In U.S. Soil
question is phrased to include the words us soil as in Which president wasnot buried in us soil, you may want to respond with the story of john tyler.
http://starship.python.net/crew/manus/Presidents/faq/soil.html
Frequently Asked Dead Presidents Questions
Which President(s) Is (Are) Not Buried in U.S. Soil
If only I had a nickel for every time I've answered this one! This question is a popular stumper, and can appear phrased in a number of different ways. Pay attention to the way the question was phrased to you, and use this information to answer (or overanswer) the question. Most commonly, whoever asked you has phrased the question in such a way that the currently serving President (and/or the living former Presidents) are possible answers. That is, if the question is stated this way: "Which U.S. President is not buried in the United States?" you could accurately answer with any of the men who have not yet made the list of Dead Presidents. The incumbent, as the only man who is currently a U.S. President, is your best bet. I believe the question first was asked in 1973 when Richard Nixon, in office, became the only living man to have been President (this had been the case only four times before during the administrations of John Adams, Ulysses Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, and Herbert Hoover). The deaths, coming so close together, of the only living ex-Presidents, Truman and Johnson, with the resulting chit-chat about Presidential funerals over the years, led to the germination of the trick trivia question: "Name the only U.S. President not buried in the U.S." (with the answer being Nixon). As I say, I'd be willing to bet that the answer that your questioner has in mind is any one or more of the (ex-)Presidents who still live. However, pay close attention to the way the question was phrased sometimes the questioner can outsmart himself....

    thin
Tyler was very thin all of his life. [
    symmetric paralysis
While a 30 year old Congressman in Washington, Tyler developed an illness that remains difficult to diagnose. Based on Tyler's clear description of the illness it would today be described as a symmetric, generalized, subacute paralysis. His recovery was so slow and prolonged that he resigned from Congress for two years [ Possible diagnoses include Guillain-Barre syndrome, myasthenia gravis, tick paralysis, diphtheritic paralysis, and botulism [
    dysentery
Tyler retired to his Virginia estate after leaving the White House. He suffered repeated attacks of dysentery in the summer [ ], the causes of which are unknown [ Tyler had little faith in doctors. He regularly "took the waters" at various spas in Virginia. He became a believer in sulfur hydrotherapy. He also took "massive" doses of calomel regularly, which may have contributed to his gastrointestinal problems. [
    frequent colds
Tyler frequently suffered from respiratory infections in the winter. [

Best Sellers John Adams by David McCullough Left to his own devices, John Adams might have lived out his days as a Massachusetts country lawyer, devoted to his family and friends. As it was, events swiftly overtook him, and Adamswho, David McCullough writes, was "not a man of the world" and not fond of politicscame to greatness as the second president of the United States, and one of the most distinguished of a generation of revolutionary leaders. He found reason to dislike sectarian wrangling even more in the aftermath of war, when Federalist and anti-Federalist factions vied bitterly for power, introducing scandal into an administration beset by other difficultiesincluding pirates on the high seas, conflict with France and England, and all the public controversy attendant in building a nation. Overshadowed by the lustrous presidents Washington and Jefferson, who bracketed his tenure in office, Adams emerges from McCullough's brilliant biography as a truly heroic figurenot only for his significant role in the American Revolution but also for maintaining his personal integrity in its strife-filled aftermath. McCullough spends much of his narrative examining the troubled friendship between Adams and Jefferson, who had in common a love for books and ideas but differed on almost every other imaginable point. Reading his pages, it is easy to imagine the two as alter egos. (Strangely, both died on the same day, the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.) But McCullough also considers Adams in his own light, and the portrait that emerges is altogether fascinating.
