According to the award citation, DeLisi was the first government scientist to conceive and outline the feasibility, goals, and parameters of the Human Genome Project. He helped to galvanize an international team of researchers to pool resources, create new technologies, and launch the monumental task of gene mapping and sequencing. See the Exceptional Service Awards At the presentation ceremony President Clinton added, "Charles DeLisi's imagination and determination helped to ignite the revolution in sequencing that would ultimately unravel the code of human life itself. Thanks to his vision and leadership, in the year 2000 we announced the complete sequencing of the human genome. Researchers are now closer than ever to finding therapies and cures for ailments once thought untreatable."

Friday, April 11, 2003 newtownbee.com - NHS Surveillance Policy Sparks Privacy Debate The Newtown Board of Education agreed Tuesday night that its Camera Surveillance on School Grounds Policy needed more work before it is implemented. The board voted 5 to 1 in a straw poll, with Margaret Hull the lone dissenter, that surveillance cameras at the high school should be left on 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The vote came after a lengthy discussion about civil liberties, student privacy, and for what the cameras were originally intended. The board has been reviewing the policy for a month making changes to the wording. But Ms Hull has expressed concern that the cameras are on all day taping students' movements. The cameras are not monitored in real time, but administrators have used the footage retroactively when an issue has arisen. "I think that when we first decided to buy these cameras, we did buy them and install them to protect our assets. Now they are being used to monitor hallways during the school day," Ms Hull said. "My concern was they may be monitored in real time going against student's civil liberties of privacy. I thought the cameras would be turned on when administrators left the building. Personally that is what I would be most comfortable with. I think it's a serious issue. I think it's very gray right now. I don't think its clear."

Contact Us NRIOL.COM - Snippets October 24, 2002 US: NRI files $60 million civil law suit According to media reports, Tejindar Singh Kahlon, 65, a Sikh US-based NRI has filed a US$60 million civil rights law suit for being barred from boarding an airplane twice last year because he refused to remove his turban for a security check. The incidents took place on October 25 and 26 of 2001, nearly six weeks after the September 11 terrorist attacks. Kahlon was born in Pakistan and has been a US citizen for about 30 years. He lives in East Meadow in Long Island, New York, had contended his religion forbade him from removing his turban for a security check. The report noted that Kahlon filed the suit on October 22, 2002 in the US district court in Central Islip against the Town of Islip, which operates the airport; the Southwest Airlines from where he had got his ticket; and the security firm International Total Services, responsible for safety of the passengers. The suit said airport security officials refused to search him with a metal detector or by touching his turban while it was on his head, said a report in Newsday, a daily published from New York City. Sikhs consider removing their turban in public the equivalent of going naked, and the US Department of Transportation said requiring Kahlon to do so was a violation of federal anti-discrimination statutes, the paper quoted Kahlon's attorney Thomas Liotti of Garden City as saying. The report indicated that Kahlon, an attorney who is a hearing officer at Nassau County Family Court, was planning to take a Southwest flight to attend the wedding of a friend's daughter last October 25 when he was asked to step off a line of passengers for a turban search, Liotti said.

International Boulevard to Andrew Young
International Boulevard
ATLANTA- Ambassador and Mrs. Andrew Young, Mayor Bill Campbell, Councilmembers C.T. Martin, "Able" Mable Thomas and Jim Maddox were joined by the extended Young family, friends and well-wishers on March 10, 2001 to change International Boulevard to Andrew Young International Boulevard. The ceremony culminated a weekend of festivities to celebrate Young's 69th birthday. Councilmember C.T. Martin sponsored the legislation to rename the street. C.T. Martin and Harriet Watkins of Georgia Power Co. searched for recognition throughout the city for one of Atlanta's most valued residents. The search turned up Georgia State University's Andrew Young School of Public Policy but no significant city recognition. One thought was to name a street for Ambassador Young, especially since he was so instrumental in making Atlanta an international city. The next thought was a to deal with the circumstances involved in a street's name change. The issues of address changes, stationary changes and the necessary logistics for street and exit signs. "He has been a visionary in so many spectrums a visionary in education, economics, politics, civil rights, social engagement and spiritually," said Martin. "We thought honoring him with a Street would give his legacy perpetuity so that children could look up, see his name and connect him with his deeds."
