THE URBAN STUDIES MAJOR
Program Statement and Description 2002-2003
  • Introduction Advising Course Requirements Admission Requirements ... Related Faculty

  • I. INTRODUCTION URBAN STUDIES AT BERKELEY The study of cities is a vital part of a sturdy liberal arts curriculum. During this moment of global change, such forms of knowledge are of critical importance. The world is more urban than in any other era in human history, and with this rapid urbanization has come the crucial role of cities as sites of economic development and crucibles of civic citizenship. It is in this context that the Urban Studies major was launched at the University of California at Berkeley in Fall 2002. The Urban Studies major is housed in the Department of City and Regional Planning (DCRP) of the College of Environmental Design. Continuing DCRP's reputation as a world leader in the study of cities and city planning, the Urban Studies major introduces students to urban environments as objects of study, analysis, critique, as well as planned change and social transformation. Given UC Berkeley's historical role as a great public educational institution serving a worldwide community, the major will ensure that students are exposed to the complex articulations of local and global which are shaping contemporary urban cartographies. Students who complete the major may pursue graduate studies in planning and various social science disciplines or employment opportunities with public agencies, non-profit organizations, service providers, and research institutions. Above all, the intent of the major is to produce urban citizens willing and able to imagine an alternative world order through innovative forms of social praxis.
