Geophysical Data and Climate Location and Size: Uruguay is located between the 30 th and 35 th degree of southern latitude und and the 53 th and 58 th degree of western longitude. Its extension is km , which is approximately half the size of the Federal Republic of Germany (but with only 3.2 million inhabitants). Frontiers: In the east, the country is limited by the Atlantic Ocean (coastline: 120 miles), in the south by the River Plate ("Río de la Plata", 236 miles) and in the west by the River Uruguay ("Río Uruguay", 272 miles). The political neighbours are Argentina (in the west and the south) and Brazil (in the north; without a natural frontier). Climate: Uruguay belongs to the subtropical climatic zone, which means (to all all non-climatologists): comfortably warm summers (lasting in fact eight to nine months) and very mild winters (during the summer in the northern hemisphere). There is no rain or dry period, what is good for agriculture. Topography: Uruguay is charcterized (besides its beautiful beaches still untouched by mass tourism) by wide, smooth and evergreen plains. The highest hill reaches only 1.685 feet.

Uruguay Introduction Geography People Government ... Transnational Issues Uruguay Introduction Top of Page Background: A violent Marxist urban guerrilla movement, the Tupamaros, launched in the late 1960s, led Uruguay's president to agree to military control of his administration in 1973. By the end of the year the rebels had been crushed, but the military continued to expand its hold throughout the government. Civilian rule was not restored until 1985. GEOGRAPHY
Uruguay is one of the smallest of the South American republics. It is bounded to the north by Brazil, to the southeast by the Atlantic, and is separated from Argentina in the west and south by the River Uruguay, which widens out into the Rio de la Plata estuary. The landscape is made up of hilly meadows broken by streams and rivers. There is a string of beaches along the coast. Most of the country is grazing land for sheep and cattle. Montevideo, the most southern point of the nation, accommodates more than half of the population. About 90% of the land is suitable for agriculture, although only 12% is used in this way. Uruguay is known as the 'Oriental Republic' because it stands on the eastern bank of the Rio de la Plata.

Malda Punta Del Este Montevideo URUGUAY - Geography Officially Eastern Republic of Uruguay, republic (1992 est. pop. 3,120,000), 68,536 sq mi (177,508 sq km), SE South America. The second smallest country in South America after Suriname, Uruguay extends from a short Atlantic coastline along the north bank of the Río de la Plata to the Uruguay River, which separates it on the west from Argentina. To the north is Brazil. The capital and largest city is Montevideo. The land is an area of topographical transition from the humid Argentine Pampa to the uplands of S Brazil. North of the alluvial plain, known as the Banda Oriental [Span.,=east bank, i.e., of the Uruguay and the Río de la Plata], Uruguay generally has long, sweeping slopes and grasslands, wooded valleys with slow-moving rivers, and long ranges of low hills, with some huge granite blocks that stand out against the horizon. Although Uruguay is within the temperate zone, climatic variations are moderate; generally the climate is warm, with rainfall evenly distributed through the seasons, but in some years there are severe droughts. The country is divided into 19 administrative departments.
