Uruguayans who profess a religion are almost exclusively Roman Catholic, but the Church and state are officially separate. Other religions have made small inroads: There is a small Jewish community in Montevideo, several evangelical Protestant groups and traces of Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church. Uruguayans are voracious meat eaters and the parrillada (beef platter) is a national standard. Another standard is chivito , a tasty and substantial steak sandwich with all the trimmings. Typical snacks include (club sandwiches) and (spicy sausage wrapped in a hot dog roll). Tea or mate is quaffed in enormous quantities. , a mixture of white wine and fruit juice, and medio y medio , part sparkling wine and part white wine, are popular, and the beer is pretty good.

      Uruguay: Financial Market
In Uruguay, the exchange market is completely free. The market is governed exclusively by the offer and demand and there are no restriction concerning the use or possession of foreign currency. The international turnovers of money, values and precious coins are also free and are not subjected to any special permission or authorization by the Government. Also, companies and particular utilities can be issued abroad. The majority of the most important banks are present in Uruguay. Law protects operations with any financial entity by a strict bank secret. Uruguay admits the existence of companies, which have shares to the bearer, where the shareholders' identity may remain confidential. Some of these companies perform offshore activities, counting with good tax exoneration. The Uruguayan duty-free zones not only benefit companies with a good tax exoneration but also with a wide range of services that is not affected by any kind of monopoly. The Uruguayan financial market is considered by many experts to be a privileged place in South America. In fact, it is considered "The Switzerland of America".

    Political History
Basic Facts Early history. Uruguay's aboriginal inhabitants were the Charrúa Indians, a hunter-gatherer people. They killed the explorer Juan Diaz de Solís and most of his party when the Spaniards encountered them in 1516. By the 17th century, the Charrúas had prospered and, abandoning hostilities, began trading with the Spanish. Independence, 1828. In 1680, the Portuguese founded Colonia on the estuary of the Río de la Plata as a rival to Spanish-held Buenos Aires on the opposite shore. Spain responded by building its own citadel at Montevideo. The early history of Uruguay is dominated by the struggle between Spain and Portugal and then between Uruguay and Argentina for control of the Banda Oriental (as Uruguay was then known). Uruguay's revolt against Spain was initiated in 1811 by José Gervasio Artigas , a gaucho chieftain who became a hero of the independence movement. Artigas is known to Uruguayans as the father of Uruguayan independence , although his attempt to gain autonomy for the country within the boundaries of a regional federation was unsuccessful. Independence was not finally and formally achieved until 1828, following a war between Uruguay and Uruguayan patriots supported by Argentina. British diplomatic mediation ended the conflict and resulted in the recognition of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay (República Oriental del Uruguay) as an independent state. Nevertheless, civil wars, invasions, and foreign intervention continued to disrupt the nation's development until the end of the nineteenth century.

estancias (cattle ranches) and small settlements concentrated about the ranch buildings. It was the rough and hardy gaucho who fought for independence, and the traditions, personal loyalties, and rivalries of the gauchos helped to keep the nation in almost continual strife for three quarters of a century after independence was won. When the revolutionary banner was raised in the Argentine in 1810, the leaders of the Banda Oriental, notably Artigas , accepted the cause, but in 1814 Artigas broke with the military junta of Buenos Aires and began a struggle for Uruguayan independence that lasted until the Brazilian occupation of Montevideo in 1820. Five years later a small group, known as the Thirty-three Immortals, under the guidance of Lavalleja , declared Uruguay independent.
    Independence and War
Rivera was chosen as president. He was promptly faced with revolts led by his old rival, Lavalleja, and when he was succeeded in office by Manuel Oribe , he himself revolted against Oribe, who was in sympathy with Juan Manuel de Rosas of Argentina. In the long fratricidal struggle that ensued, the two dominant political parties of Uruguay emerged, Rivera's Colorados [reds] and Oribe's Blancos [whites].
