    A Brief History of Uruguay
When the Europeans arrived, the whole of what is now Uruguay was home to only about 10,000 indigenous people. Though scouted by the Spanish in 1516, the lack of mineral resources or a native population that could be forced to work made the region unattractive to the Spanish. The vast pampas of Uruguay interested the Portuguese colonists in Brazil more than the Spanish. Until the Spanish ousted the Portuguese in the 18th century, Uruguay was more a part of Brazil. When Argentina gained its independence in 1810, Brazil and Argentina both wanted the sparsely-populated Uruguay. They fought a war (1825-28) which ended without a clear victor, after which the British brokered a treaty creating Uruguay as a buffer state between Brazil and Argentina. During the 20th century, Uruguay came to be known as one of the most progressive societies in Latin America. It stood out as an example for its advanced social legislation, political stability, and relatively high standard of living. But during the 1960s, problems arising from the stagnating agricultural economy causes social unrest. An urban guerrilla group called the Tupamaros fought back with terrorism when the government cracked down on unions and students. The military was then called in to fight the Tupamaros, and this brought not only the defeat of the Tupamaros, but also a military dictatorship from 1973 to 1985. During this period all opposition was suppressed, and Uruguay had the highest ratio of political prisoners to population in the world.

    Some Flashes on Uruguayan History
    The Colonial Period
Uruguay between Spain and Portugal When the delta of the River Plate ("Río de la Plata") has been first discovered by europeans is not completely clear. According to the Spanish version of things, which is the commonly accepted one ( the winners write the history), Juan Díaz de Solís was the first to explore the River Plate (in 1516) Note But the Portuguese, on the other side, claim that two of their countrymen -Nuño Manoel and Cristóbal de Haro-had done this already two years earlier, based on documents of the powerful German merchants family Fugger. At that time, this was everything but an academic question, because the one who arrived "first" had certain rights to 'claim' the territory. Furthermore, geographically Uruguay belongs to Brazil which was, according to the Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) between Portugal and Spain portuguese territory. As a consequence, during many decades there were constant armed struggles about the control and posession of the "Banda Oriental" ("Eastern Belt"), how the region east of the River Uruguay, who later gave the country its name, was called at that time.

    BRIEF HISTORY OF URUGUAYAN ROCK
    by Fernando Pau Cebey
Uruguay is a small country located among the two giants from South America: Brazil and Argentina. Separated from Argentina by British political manoeuvres in the past century, Uruguay has developed in its 170 years of existence a personality lightly different from its bigger neighbour, due fundamentally to most of Spanish immigration contrary to the clearly Italian influenced Argentina. In the sixties, contrary to most of its neighbours, Uruguay breathed a climate of total freedom unaware to the military dictatorships that razed the continent with censorship and repression. When the rock phenomenon -mainly through the Beatles- burst in Montevideo (capital city of Uruguay), a vernacular rock movement began to generate deploying its achievements initially in the own country and then, for logical projection, toward the rest of South America. By the middle of the 60s, what is known in Argentina as "the Uruguayan invasion" took place: youths were gratefully surprised by bands that sounded like The Beatles ( Los Shakers ) or The Rolling Stones ( Los Mockers ). The recording industry welcomed this new phenomenon and began to sign unknown groups, resembling what took place in London when the record companies recruited any band from Liverpool in the middle of the Merseybeat craze. The Uruguayan rock meant in Argentina rock of good quality.

COLONIA DEL SACRAMENTO: Founded in 1680 by Manuel Lobo, it was declared as a "World Heritage" by the UNESCO.-
It's like a jewel of the colonial epoch, which preserves the enchantment of the old times.- It can be noticed in its houses of tiles, mud and stone in Spanish an Portuguese styles. Today they are restored and painted in bright colors. Among its walls you can find warm hotels such as "Plaza Mayor".- You can feel a nostalgic air that gives off from its paved streets, the yellow lanterns hanging in the doors, the flowery flowerpots standing in the windows and a lonely lighthouse looking over the river which surrounds the old city. A real charm that equally captures filmmakers, international artists, tourists and couples in love.- The Old City: although it was founded in 1680 by the Portuguese, it still preserves part of its original buildings, ramaining its defensive wall and narrow streets which wriggle in the search of the river.- Walking along the paved streets is like going through a poetical space.
