The following compilation of Internet/WWW sites is intended to be an introductory guide to some of the map and reference resources available via the World Wide Web. Consider using one of the WWW search engines if you are looking for a specific type of map or reference. The maps which are listed here have been selected because they are thought to be reasonably useful and/or interesting. They are categorized by geographical region although there are a couple of thematic categories such as Interactive Maps which both highlights the potential of the WWW and are also fun to use. Note that there is some overlap in geographic coverage between these categories. The emphasis is on displayable maps (e.g. images) rather than digital cartographic (GIS) and satellite data which can be found in the separate compilation Geodata Information Sources . There is also another listing which includes Weather Maps and Imagery

Search by Keyword Geographic Location Subject Index Creator Index ... Title Index The panoramic map was a popular cartographic form used to depict U.S. and Canadian cities and towns during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Known also as bird's-eye views, perspective maps, and aero views, panoramic maps are nonphotographic representations of cities portrayed as if viewed from above at an oblique angle. Although not generally drawn to scale, they show street patterns, individual buildings, and major landscape features in perspective. The majority of items presented here are documented in PANORAMIC MAPS of Cities in the United States and Canada Albert Ruger, Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler, Lucien R. Burleigh, Henry Wellge, and Oakley H. Bailey who prepared more than fifty-five percent of the panoramic maps in the Library of Congress. Additional panoramic maps will be added throughout 1998. The mission of the Library of Congress is to make its resources available and useful to Congress and the American people and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations. The goal of the Library's National Digital Library Program is to offer broad public access to a wide range of historical and cultural documents as a contribution to education and lifelong learning. The Library of Congress presents these documents as part of the record of the past. These primary historical documents reflect the attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs of different times. The Library of Congress does not endorse the views expressed in these collections, which may contain materials offensive to some readers.

    Course Objectives
Geography 460 covers the theory and application of computerized geographic information systems (GIS). It combines an overview of general principles of GIS and practical experience in the analytical use of spatial information. It can be taken as an introduction (a bit challenging one) or as a way to deepen already established understanding, or as a way to add GIS techniques to an existing environmental discipline. The lectures cover a comprehensive overview of the analytical treatment of geographic information, following the organization of a textbook written by the instructor. The practical component involves the use of an analytical software package, leading to a project experience. Lab exercises are interspersed with discussion events to connect the practical material to broader practice. Web resources will provide lecture notes, exercise materials, discussion materials and sources for geographic information and analysis at UW and around the world.
Each student will be required to apply computer tools to an issue requiring spatial analysis, some of it outside of class hours. This course is designed for a broad range of students, but each student should have some exposure to the procedures used to make maps and some introduction to the use of spatial information. Geography students should have
