The Major U.S. Stock Exchanges The U.S. securities market originated in 1790, when the federal government refinanced all federal and state Revolutionary War debt, issuing $80 million in bonds. Over the years, stock exchanges facilitated the country's economic expansion by providing a centralized market for stock and bond securities trading. Today, a sophisticated network of stock exchanges across the country allows investors to trade domestic and international securities efficiently and reliably. The dynamic U.S. securities market can be compared to a real estate agency. Just as an agency doesn't own the houses it sells, an exchange doesn't own the stocks and bonds it trades. Listing with a realtor simply enables homeowners to reach more potential buyers. Similarly, by listing their stocks on an exchange, companies that have issued securities through an offering and are traded in the market gain access to a wider pool of investors. Auction trading
The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the American Stock Exchange (AMEX) are the primary U.S. floor-based, open-auction stock trading markets. Each brings together buyers and sellers in an open-bid process to trade directly with one another on the floor of the exchange.
  • The NYSE originated in 1792, when 24 prominent brokers and merchants gathered to sign the Buttonwood agreement. This historic pact—an arrangement to trade securities on a common commission basis—led to the establishment of the New York Stock and Exchange Board in 1817, which was renamed the New York Stock Exchange in 1863. It typically trades the oldest, largest and best-known firms. References to the "Big Board" relate to its original name.

NEW YORK - The US financial markets came to a halt yesterday and many other stock exchanges around the world suspended trading or closed down, following terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon in the United States. The US Securities and Exchange Commission said all exchanges had decided to close. The announcement followed a suspension of trading on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq Stock Market. The American Stock Exchange had already decided to close for the day. ''As a safety precaution, while the tragic events of today are sorted out, the securities markets have decided not to open for trading today,'' SEC chairman Harvey Pitt said in a statement. ''We strongly support that decision.''

CAES allows National Association of Securities Dealers, Inc. (NASD ) member firms to direct orders in NYSE and AMEX listed securities to Market Makers for near-immediate execution. ITS features in the system provide an interface between the ITS and authorized CAES/ITS Market Makers. To other ITS participants (other stock exchanges), this ITS interface is their connection to the NASDAQ InterMarket SM for NYSE and AMEX listed securities. The ITS interface allows CAES/ITS Market Makers to direct orders and receive orders from the exchanges. Orders in CAES must be preferenced to a specific Market Maker and sent in a principal or agency capacity. Trading With ITS NASDAQ Market Makers in NYSE and AMEX listed securities can send market or marketable limit orders to exchange specialists on floors of U.S. stock exchanges. Each order must be preferenced to a specific exchange and can be sent in a principal or agency capacity. Exchange specialists also can place orders through ITS that are routed for execution to Market Makers at the best bid or offer.

Defining The Trading Day on U.S. Security Exchanges

Defining The Trading Day on U.S. Security Exchanges
Technological advances continue to streamline transactions at U.S. equity exchanges but, surprisingly, some trading innovations have led to delayed quotations of daily summary data. For example, changes made at the stock exchanges in October 1999 led some CSI customers to complain that they did not get their stock data early enough. We agreed that later was generally not better, but in this case, later was the only way to maintain an accurate record of market activity. Fortunately, the inconsistencies introduced in October 1999 and explained below are coming to an end. We anticipate that the very latest innovations at the U.S. securities exchanges will be good news for CSI customers and traders around the world.

Posted on Sat, Feb. 01, 2003 MONEY COLUMN: Assessing mutual fund performance
BY ERIC TYSON
Columnist
Q.
I'm a mutual fund investor with about a dozen different mutual funds. My portfolio is diversified and includes various bond and stock funds, including some that invest overseas. With what should I compare each fund's return so as to know whether the various fund managers are doing a good job? A. A mutual fund's returns should be compared with the performance of the most appropriate benchmark. Take a look at the types of securities the fund invests in, and then find an investment index that tracks the performance of those kinds of securities. The Russell 2000 Index tracks 2,000 smaller-company U.S. stocks. The Wilshire 5000 Index tracks all stocks of all sizes on the major U.S. stock exchanges. When you invest in funds that invest overseas, you should use a comparative index that tracks the performance of international stock markets. The Morgan Stanley EAFE (which stands for Europe, Australia and Far East) index tracks the performance of the more established countries' stock markets. Morgan Stanley also has an index that tracks the performance of the emerging markets in Southeast Asia and Latin America. What if you're invested in a fund that holds both U.S. stocks and international stocks? Create your own benchmark. Suppose, for example, that a particular stock fund typically invests 80 percent in U.S. stocks of all sizes and 20 percent in the larger, established countries overseas. You could create your own benchmark index by multiplying the returns of the Wilshire 5000 index by 80 percent and the Morgan Stanley EAFE international index by 20 percent, and then adding those two together.

The decision to suspend trading in Pakistan was taken on Sunday
Financial market regulators in Pakistan have announced that the country's three stock exchanges will remain closed until next week. The exchanges have not traded since Monday.
The expectation is that after the opening the initial few hours are going to see pretty steep slides
Fahran Bokhari, Financial Times correspondent The initial decision to suspend trading was taken last weekend but markets were expected to re-open on Thursday. Regulators are concerned that when the markets do re-open, heavy selling will take place, prompted by expectations of military retaliation for the terrorist attacks in the US. Following the attacks last Tuesday, the benchmark 100-share index of the Karachi Stock Exchange shed more than 9% as investors rushed to sell their shares. Pakistan has stock markets in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.

APRIL 12, 2003 SAT Asian stock exchanges remain steady The 9/11 anniversary was a non-event for bourses, most of which edged marginally higher despite a lower-than-usual turnover By Colin Tan
    MARKETS CORRESPONDENT
ASIAN bourses survived the first anniversary of the Sept 11 terrorist attacks without any major hitches. Most stock markets edged marginally higher despite a lower-than-usual turnover, dealers said yesterday. The majority of investors opted for the security of the sidelines although some resilient souls bought stocks, betting that Wall Street would also experience a non-event, they said. Leading Asian bourses higher were the Philippines and South Korea - racking up gains of 1.7 and 1.6 per cent respectively. In both cases however, trading volume was light and dealers noted that for the momentum to be sustained, turnover has to grow stronger, meaning increased foreign participation. Stocks in the rest of Asia were marginally higher by less than 1 per cent. At home, the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) hardly changed as it rose all of 0.6 points to 1,448.48 on thin turnover. The only two markets that inched lower were Taiwan and Hongkong.
