CSAS STAFF: Thomas Metcalf , a noted British Empire and Modern South Asian scholar of the History Department, is Chairman of the Center for South Asia Studies. Professor Metcalf is also the holder of the Sarah Kailath Chair in India Studies. Professor Metcalf's current project is looking at India as the "center" of the British Empire in the 19th Century, from which ideas, personnel, and institutions flowed out to the entire Indian Ocean region. BOYER LEWIS (DIRECTOR) The concentration in American studies offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of American culture. The concentration provides an excellent background for graduate work, foreign service, law, or secondary school teaching. Students concentrating in American studies will take the two interdisciplinary courses ( AMST 210 AMST 215 ).
