Nyhuis ISBN: 0-917120-13-2 To order, use our Order Form , visit your local book store, or shop at Detailed descriptions of the top 53 U.S. zoos are included. The author has visited each zoo, and his review includes hours and admission fees, driving and bus directions, don't-miss exhibits, touring tips to make a visit easier and more efficient, and details on the entertainment available. Each zoo's featured exhibits are highlightedplus other exhibits are described and special attractions for the kids are noted. Smaller zoos, aquariums, and other places that display animals are also described, as are noteworthy zoos in Canada, Mexico, Europe, and other areas of the world. An entire chapter is devoted to descriptions and photos of interesting zoo animals. What People are saying about this book "This unique travel book deserves a wide readership. Carefully and thoroughly done." Library Journal (from a starred review) Excerpt from the book: TOP ZOOS We live in a competitive society that always wants to know what's best. There are "Top 10" lists for everything from city populations to college sports teams. In this book zoos are not ranked from best to worst, nor are they given an overall numeric score. Ranking zoos is a subjective matter. Some visitors want to see lots of birds. Others aren't interested in birds and want to see reptiles or bears. So rating a zoo is dependent on the particular interests of the individual visitor.

Anegada iguana One challenge encountered this year for tracking of headstarted Jamaican iguanas following release has been the need to design methods for implanting radio transmitters surgically rather than using backpacks, which disintegrate over time in rugged limestone habitats. Working with the Zoological Society of San Diego's Veterinary Services Department and collaborators at the Fort Worth Zoo, three types of internal radio antenna configurations are being tested this year in the captive group of Cuban iguanas at CRES. Next year, findings will be applied towards a safer and more effective tracking method for Jamaican iguanas released into the wild.

Panda porn to cure bedtime blues
Giant pandas are not known for their sexual prowess. CHENGDU, China China is flicking on sex videos, and not Viagra, to rouse the dreary desires of captive male giant pandas who are famously indifferent to female overtures. As notoriously sex-shy giant pandas reach adulthood in China around the age of six they are now routinely given ringside seats to panda porn as part of their initiation rites. When Didi turned six on Tuesday at the China Giant Panda Breeding and Research Center in Wolong, he sat eyes glued in front of a screen that showed a video of two giant pandas mating, according to the official Xinhua news agency. "Didi seemed to like his gift immensely," it reported of his coming of age.

1984 IPPL successfully fought plans by three us zoos to import 7 wildcaughtgorillas from the African nation of Cameroon, using the Miami animal dealer
http://www.ippl.org/about.html
The International Primate Protection League was founded in 1973, and, since this time, has been working continuously for the well-being of primates. IPPL has Field Representatives in 31 countries. Its Advisory Board is composed of experts from the fields of zoology, anthropology, medicine, biology, veterinary medicine, and psychology. Many IPPL officers have lived for long periods with primates in their natural habitats. Primates are disappearing at an alarming rate. Every primate species is listed on the appendices of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. All apes, (gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees, bonobos, and gibbons), all lemurs, and many monkeys appear on the Convention's Appendix 1, the list reserved for the most endangered species. All other primates are listed on Appendix II. In countries where primates live, IPPL's Field Representatives work to create and preserve national parks and sanctuaries, and for bans on primate hunting, trapping, and local and international trade. IPPL's educational efforts have contributed to decisions by many countries to ban or restrict primate trade and to establish programs to protect primate habitat.

creatures from becoming extinct . So they are sending lemurs thathave been bred in us zoos back home to their native Madagascar.
http://ology.amnh.org/genetics/aroundtheworld/pages/lemur.html
The answer to this riddle is one of my favorite animals. My name is Yael Wyner , and I study black and white ruffed lemurs . These small, furry mammals live in Madagascar, an island off the southeast coast of Africa. Many forests in Madagascar have been destroyed because people need land for grazing and farming. So now lemurs are endangered. Scientists want to prevent these marvelous creatures from becoming extinct . So they are sending lemurs that have been bred in U.S. zoos back home to their native Madagascar.
