Feature Story and Photography by Stan Byrd NO MORE BOARDING SCHOOLS Connecting Navajo Mountain SOME SAY STUDENTS DO BETTER IN THE VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENT, AND THOSE WITH DISABILITIES REPORT FEELING MORE AT EASE. When John Wesley Powell navigated the Colorado River in the 1800s he penned his thoughts as he viewed the passage between towering rock cliffs, "The canyon opened like a beautiful portal to a region of glory, and that is the gateway through which we enter on our voyage of exploration tomorrow and what shall we find?" Today's pioneers in distance learning will have to answer the question, "And what shall we find?" There is only a rough gravel road into Navajo Mountain, a tiny Navajo reservation settlement along the Utah-Arizona border. Some homes still lack running water and electricity in this isolated community. Yet, 38 high school students there are taking classes via two-way television, interacting with instructors and other students at sites hundreds of miles away. Both instructors and students use e-mail to transmit homework and completed assignments to each other. They use the Internet daily to enhance classroom assignments. The new-age classrooms are part of a distance learning system formed by a partnership between the Utah Education Network, College of Eastern Utah and the San Juan School District. Just a few years ago, distance learning at Navajo Mountain meant a four-hour drive for instructors or a 45-minute flight in a small plane to a dirt landing strip. Usually, the pilot had to make a low pass over the strip to scare off goats and sheep before landing. In winter months, flights were hampered by bad weather and early darkness, often forcing pilot and instructor to camp out in an old warehouse.

JUST A MATTER OF TIME: DRUG FREE ZONES? APRIL 8 2001 by Albert Burns Have you noticed the signs near our schools which proclaim them "Drug Free Zones?" That would be almost laughable if it weren't so ironic (the opposite of what it purports to be)! The official NEA Journal predicted in 1969 that: "New drama will play on the educational stage as DRUGS are introduced EXPERIMENTALLY to improve in the learner such qualities as personality, concentration and memory [Ritalin, etc.] The application of bio-chemical research findings, heretofore centered in the infra-human subjects, such as fish, could be a source of conspicuous controversy when CHILDREN become the objects of EXPERIMENTATION." (Emphasis added) Unfortunately, parents have been sold the idea that the use of drugs, such as Ritalin, (often MANDATORY) on their children is for "treatment" not "experimentation." In that same NEA article, the NEA anticipated that resistance on the part of parents would arise and pointed to a possible "solution:" ...there could be a tinderbox quality to the introduction of MANDATORY foster homes and "boarding schools" for children between the ages of two and three whose home environment was felt to have a MALIGNANT influence." (Emphasis added) Does that seem extremely outrageous to any of you? Are you saying to yourselves "That could never happen in America"? Well, you better think again! In April, 1998 a syndicated Washington Post news service article, published a number of places in the U.S. said: "MINNEAPOLIS- Minnesota lawmakers voted Thursday to build state-run boarding schools to house and educate children from poor families and TROUBLED neighborhoods...housing anywhere from 150 to 900 school children. Gov. Arne Carlson, the plan's author, described the three institutions planned for Minnesota as hybrids between orphanages and preparatory schools." The same article stated: "The measure's passage made Minnesota the FIRST state to return to the old fashioned notion of providing publicly funded living and schooling called orphanages in their era." (Emphasis added)

Home MESA Navajo Code Talkers Introduction The Navajo people, called Dine', are from the southwestern four corner states of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado. After the Treaty of 1868 was signed between the Navajo and the United States government, the government felt responsible for the education of Navajo children. As a result, boarding schools were created and children were taken from their families and taught to bury their traditional Navajo culture in these schools. At boarding school, children were forbidden to speak their language and they were punished severely if caught. Many people tried to hide their children from officers who came to put them in the schools, but a lot of children were taken anyway. In the Navajo culture, it is emphasized that people should always be aware of the enemy. They should always be prepared to fight to protect their land and their people. Besides the Anglos, the Navajo did not realize that a more ominous enemy would threaten them. During World War II, the Japanese wanted to gain worldwide control. However, a major obstacle was the presence of the United States Navy in the Northern Pacific. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked the American Navy at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The bombing of Pearl Harbor had a great impact on the Navajo. Many Navajo men reacted to the Japanese attack and reported for duty to the Indian agency for they felt they had been prepared for battle their entire lives. Some even came on horseback with their own rifles not knowing where they were exactly going.

Much of Ann Elizabeth or Betsy Parsons Webster's history is included with the history of Francis Webster. In this section, though, are given remembrances of Betsy. Arrival in Cedar City Amy Elizabeth Webster Leigh wrote about her mother's arrival in Cedar City. A few days after they reached Cedar, representatives of the Benevolent Society called to see if they could help them, but mother's independence prompted her to say no unless they had some soap they would lend her. They sent the soap, and mother paid them back the first time that she made soap. It was not charity but work that she wanted. Father had an old overcoat that was very shabby, and by examining the inside, mother decided it could be made over. She picked it to pieces, taking notice how it was put together. She made the coat over, and people wondered where the new coat came from. When told the story, there were others who had cloths that could be made over. Mother was employed to do this work, and she started the business of tailoring that she carried on for more than 20 years. The school board wanted her to teach school, but if she had done that she would have had to have someone take care of her children, but if she sewed she could care for them herself.
