New UEA Leader Says It's Time to Be Creative
Pat Rusk, a 25-year veteran of the classroom, takes over as president of the Utah Education Association in a time of acute challenges to public schools. (Grayson West/The Salt Lake Tribune) BY SHINIKA SYKES
THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE

It's not the best of times to be taking over as the head of Utah's largest teachers union.
State revenues are falling at the same time student enrollments are increasing; a U.S. Supreme Court ruling approved vouchers for private schools; and educators are frustrated by larger class sizes and stagnant wages.
But Pat Rusk won't dwell on why her tenure as the new Utah Education Association president has begun in the midst of acute challenges to public education.
