Paraeducators and Teachers:
Partners in the Classroom
A t the state line between Utah and Idaho, Oakwood Elementary School is just a few minutes drive from Utah State University. Many of the university's new education graduates get their first teaching assignments at Oakwood, a happy circumstance that has meant the school and its district here in Preston, Idaho, get well-trained beginning teachers. But it's also meant a moderately high turnover rate as these young teachers move to new opportunities to build their careers or start families. The result is that "a lot of our paraeducators outlast our teachers," says Jerry Waddoups, curriculum director for the Preston School District, in the latest By Request booklet, Working Together for Successful Paraeducator Services: A Guide for Paraeducators, Teachers, and Principals.

About the Author
The SURWEB Digital Archive The SURWEB digital archive experienced dynamic growth from its inception. After its launch in 1997, SURWEB accelerated the acquisition and development of content by soliciting competitive grants called “site awards” to curriculum designers who then developed “Media Shows.” Media Shows address classroom tasks in much the same way that lesson plans address tasks. SURWEB users can choose to publish their Media Shows for the public, thus sharing research and content with other teachers and students in the SURWEB on-line community. The sharing of Media Shows is an important “public access” function of SURWEB that builds and sustains a community of learners, offers students a wider audience for publishing, and keeps the database of learning products vital and dynamic ( http://www.surweb.org/search/ms_classroom.asp)

The SIP is based on needs assessment and developed by a partnership that represents agencies, families, students and communities in order to implement the best improvement strategies to increase state and local capacity to improve outcomes for students with disabilities. INTERAGENCY COLLABORATION AND TRANSITION
"Collaboration is a way of thinking and relating, a philosophy, a paradigm shift, an attitude change. It requires a set of behaviors, beliefs, attitudes, and values. The result is a sense of shared ownership, shared responsibility, shared success."
Bishop, K.K. (1993) Family/Professional Collaboration for Children with Special Health Needs and Their Families (Monograph), Burlington, Vermont: Department of Social Work, University of Vermont, pg. 11-12.
As parents anticipate the transition of their student with disabilities from school programs to adult services they are faced with significant challenges. In order to accomplish the complex planning and successful outcomes desired, effective collaboration between parents and professionals is essential.
"No one can do it alone. Improving the quality of life and the education of children with disabilities and their families requires the collective knowledge, skills, experience and expertise of all family members and professionals. It requires that the community and all service systems work together to achieve the goals of the child and family."
