This important document (copy of the original) shows the first non-native view of Utah geography. Historian Herbert Eugene Bolton produced a map showing present-day Utah and the trek of Dominguez and Escalante. (Both maps appeared in the 1952 volume of Utah Historical Quarterly In 1950, E. Keith Eddington painted Father Escalante Discovers Utah Valley , depicting the priests' first view of Utah Lake. (Original in the collection of the Utah State Historical Society) Fathers Dominguez

In July-October 1776 Catholic Franciscan priests Francisco Atanasio Dominguez and Silvestre Vélez de Escalante led a group from Santa Fe through Utah, seeking a new route to Catholic missions in California. The Spanish priests wrote about the geography and their experiences with the indigenous people; their journals and maps helped pave the way for future exploration.

27. GEOLOGY
utah geographyThis is a digital atlas of Utah generated by the Departmentof Geography and Earth Resources at Utah State University.
http://www.wrc.ce.ttu.edu/henrypage/geogr.html
GEOGRAPHY
The topography of the region is dominated by three major peaks (Ellen, Pennell, and Hillers), which rise to over 11,000ft, and two lesser mountains (Holmes and Ellsworth) in the southeastern part of the study area, which rise to over 7,800ft. The beautiful, but virtually impassable landscape, in concert with the inhospitable climate, are the chief reasons for the continuing regional isolation. The area is replete with colorful place names. Some of the origins are known, and obvious, while others, at least at the time of this writing, remain enigmatic. Evidence of humor and understatement abound, as do awe and respect. All but one of the peaks were named for persons associated with the Powell Survey. Mount Ellen was named by A. H. Thompson for his wife, the sister of Powell. She, and Powell's wife, spent considerable time in the field and by all accounts she was a real asset to the scientific work. Thompson was the leader of the party that crossed the mountains between Mount Pennell and Mount Ellen at what is now call Pennellen Pass. The photo above right is Steamboat Point and the associated badlands in the northwestern part of the study area. Early settlers in the region are remembered by names attached to landmarks. These include Hanks, Durfey, Starr, Hite, Teeples, Gibbons, and many others. There are two Cache Creeks, three Mud Springs, two Sidehill Springs, two Horns, two Birch Springs, and two Copper Creeks. Brown's Creek was the campsite of Cap Brown, one of the earliest outlaws to seek refuge in the region.

To the west the Great Basin extends to the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California The Great Salt Lake has no outlet because it is at the bottom of a basin of interior drainage. The result is a terminal lake Fresh water entering from the Bear, Jordan, and Weber river drainage systems can only exit by evaporation or by seepage into deep groundwater layers. Current climate conditions of high evaporation and a low input of fresh water from streams results in a saline lake If you look carefully at any topographic map you should be able to pick out the various lakeshore levels or stands of the ancient fresh water Lake Bonneville -which was found here during glacial times. The most important stands are the Provo, Bonneville, Stansbury, and Gilbert standssee chart below:

Clark County School District One major criticism of the current state of education in the United States is that American students are ignorant of geography. In the past few years, however, a serious commitment has been made by National Geographic Society and Teachers to educate our students in the science of our planet. The National Geographic Society (NGS) and the National Council for Geographic Education have been working diligently in the past decade to enable our students to compete internationally in the area of geography. In 1984, GUIDELINES IN GEOGRAPHIC EDUCATION: FIVE THEMES, was published. The National Geographic Society (NGS), under the leadership of Gil Grovsner, founded the Geographic Education Program in 1985. This program marked the beginning of the NGS Alliance Network, a consortium of educational programs which was to be established in each state. As of 1994, all 50 states as well as Puerto Rico and Canada were members of the Alliance Network, working particularly with the unit known as the Geography Alliance. These state alliances are key players in the geography movement; their goal is to train educators to successfully teach geography. Each year, workshops and conferences and Alliance Summer Geography Institutes are held throughout the United States. The State Alliances have expanded K-12 teacher geographic and environmental horizons. The NGS 1994 WORKSHOP ON WILDERNESS, held in Portland, Oregon, drew 104 participants nationwide who had the unique opportunity to visit several wilderness areas. This experience provided an abundance of educational information, which, it was hoped, would be shared with fellow teachers. The Workshop was specifically designed to train the teachers to implement a plan in each state to promote Geography Awareness Week. The theme was "Keeping an Eye on the Wilderness."

Utah History Encyclopedia Location C entrally located in the Intermountain West, Utah is bordered by all of the mountain states except Montana and is often called the "Crossroads of the West." The state's centrality is important to the prosperity of the Wasatch Front, Utah's core area, and particularly to the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The term "Salt Lake Empire" refers to the large geographical area that comes under considerable economic and/or religious influence from Salt Lake. The empire penetrates significantly into Idaho, Wyoming, and Nevada, somewhat in Arizona, and is not of much consequence in either New Mexico or Colorado. Size At 84,916 square miles or 54,340,240 acres, Utah is the thirteenth largest state in the United States. Approximately three percent of the surface is covered by water. Landforms Rising to 13,528 feet, Kings Peak is the highest spot in Utah, and Beaver Dam Wash in the southwestern corner of the state is the lowest point at 2,350 feet. Only the Uinta Mountains have peaks that exceed 13,000 feet, and there are twenty-four of them that do. Three other mountains systems have peaks that exceed 12,000 feet—the La Sal, Tushar, and Deep Creek Mountains. The highest peak in the Wasatch Mountains, Mount Nebo, is 11,877 feet.

This spectacular cliff-and-canyon landscape and wilderness is full of the unexpected, including the astonishing span of Kolob Arch, the world's longest at 310 feet. Zion is a showcase of geology. Geologic processes have played a very visible role in shaping the terrain here, where an arid climate and sparse vegetation allow the exposure of large expanses of bare rock and thus reveal geologic history in a way not possible in wetter lands clothed in vegetation. Mule deer, golden eagles, mountain lions and many other desert-adapted species inhabit the 229 square miles of Zion.
