    A Place of My Own:
A Study of Maps This unit incoperates the importance of map skills with an integrated approach to writing and mathematics. In this unit we tale a trip through the city, county, and state of the stutdents. This is appropriate for the fourth grade. The unit is kicked off by exploring lots of different maps of about Utah. The student will investigate the maps and comp up with questions they have about maps. These questions are written down and stored in the Geography Folder. The Geography Folder is where all the work through out the unit is stored. At the end of the unit the papers will be bound and made in to a brochure of the state. The students will study a map of their city and located a color important place in their city such as their homes, school, etc... The students make a map key of the colors they used and what they stand for. The will write a paragraph about what they have learned and store it in the Geography Folder. We next move to studying the county in which the students live. We look at a map that has the various resources avaible in our county. The students answer question about the map. This teaches them the importance to looking at the whole map and studing it. The students write a paragraph about what they learned about their county and store it in the Geography Folder.

Physical Map Introduction [Top of Page] The state known as Utah began when Brigham Young led a group of Mormon pilgrims seeking freedom from religious persecution into the Great Salt Lake Valley, where they established a settlement in 1847. The state gets its name from the Ute, an Indian tribe who lived there before the pioneers arrived. The golden spike completing the first transcontinental railroad line was driven at Promontory, Utah, in 1869, leading to a further influx of settlers. Utah was admitted as the 45th state in 1896. The capital, Salt Lake City, is also the world headquarters for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and Mormons make up 70 percent of the population. LaBonty works for Qwest. McNeally is a University of Utah doctoral student in geography. Borgione works for a state agency. All three deal with how humans interact with the landscapes they occupy.
    For example:
The center of GIs activity at the University is the Digitally Integrated Geographic Information Technologies Laboratory, or DIGIT Lab. Located in Orson Spencer Hall, the DIGIT Lab includes two main labs for student use, each with a few dozen computer terminals, plus a smaller production lab, which serves as a consulting firm for various agencies and companies. The variety of applications for GIs technology keeps the lab busy. Color satellite image of
    Great Salt Lake.
In another project, a DIGIT lab student entered satellite imagery from 1972 to 1996 into a computer to create a GIs animation that displayed not only how Great Salt Lake expands and shrinks with changing water levels, but also showed the development and the changing locations of wetlands and mud flats.
Philip Emmi, a professor of urban and regional planning, used GIs to challenge the adequacy of the final environmental impact statement for the proposed Legacy Highway, which proponents contend will alleviate traffic jams that now plague Interstate 15 commuters between Salt Lake City and Davis County suburbs.
