Avalanches
Dateline: 02/22/99 Avalanches have always occurred in the mountainous regions of the world though with the growth of winter-time recreations, fatalities have been on the rise since the 1950s. The year 1999 has already been a particularly deadly year for avalanches in the United States - fourteen people have been killed since January 1. A single avalanche in Cumberland Pass, Colorado on February 6 killed two skiers and a snomobiler. That same day, two others died in California and Utah. Internationally, the Alpine countries of France, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy experience the greatest number of avalanches and loss of life annually. The United States ranks fifth worldwide in avalanche danger. The states of Colorado, Alaska, and Utah are the most deadly. Avalanche prevention and mitigation involves a variety of methods. Snow fences are built to prevent the buildup of snow in starting zones, structures are built to stabilize snow. deflecting walls are built to divert avalanche flows away from buildings and even entire towns. Sheds build across roadways that pass through persistent avalanche paths can help to protect motorists from avalanches. Additionally, the reforestation of slopes with trees helps to prevent avalanches.

Overview Climate/Maps Description Things To Do Camping/Lodging Nearby/Resources
Setting Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument extends from the town of Boulder in south-central Utah, along the foothills of the Boulder Mountains, 60 miles to the Arizona border and the town of Big Water on U.S. 89. At its widest point, it is nearly 90 miles from Capitol Reef on the northeast boundary to Johnson Canyon near Kanab on the southwest edge. The Monument encompasses the Grand Staircase in its western portion, the Kaiparowits Plateau in the eastern ,with the Canyons of the Escalante sandwiched between. Much of the Escalante River and many of its side canyons are already within the Glen Canyon NRA, so virtually the entire stream is now set aside. There are about 2,656 square miles in the Monument, equivalent to a square 52 miles long by 52 miles wide. The monument is 900,000 acres larger than the total acreage of Utah's five existing national parks. It contains more land than all of the national parks in Utah, Colorado, Nevada and Wyoming (except Yellowstone) combined. The monument abuts the Glen Canyon National Recreation area (1,236,880 acres) on the east and south, and Capitol Reef National Park (241,904 acres) on the northeast and Bryce Canyon National Park (35,835 acres) along the western edge.
