Live Fire Science Satellite Broadcast
Teachers – Join us!
Contact: Erin Darboven (801)977-4344 Salt Lake City, Utah.....Tuesday, October 8, 2002.....
Educators may register now for a live fire science satellite broadcast! On Thursday, November 7, the Bureau of Land Management is hosting the 1-hour broadcast titled, "Share the Adventure: Exploring Fire Science." The broadcast is an interactive opportunity to learn more about wildland fire. It is a free broadcast and is correlated to National Science Education Standards. Wildfire is very familiar to schoolchildren growing up in Tooele and Utah Counties. In an effort to help viewers better understand fire science and management challenges, "Exploring Fire Science" will provide an opportunity to discover more from fire scientists and experts in a live broadcast. The program is geared for the middle-school audience but would be of interest to all ages. Fire experts will be available by phone and fax to talk to students and a free educator’s guide and classroom materials will accompany the program. "Exploring Fire Science" will take participants on a virtual field trip to see the effects of wildfire, get a behind-the-scenes look at the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho and learn how communities are assessing and managing the risks of wildfires. The program will address how and why fires start, develop and spread; the role of fire in ecosystems; fire behavior and fire management.
