bigchalk ClassMate First Digital Resource Endorsed by Utah State Board of Education BERWYN, June 17, 2002 "The Utah State Board of Education's decision demonstrates the growing trend for states to tap Internet-delivered resources to enrich traditional curriculum materials, add currency to content, and address a variety of learning styles," says Jack Lynch, chief executive officer of bigchalk. Dixie State College History
By Dan Watson
Dixie State College of Utah emerged from the desire for learning of the Mormon pioneers who lived in the remote isolation of Utah's Dixie, a plain on the Virgin River in the heat of the Mohave Desert. The people supported modest schools early, but permanent roots for secondary and post secondary education were planted only after the colony had survived 50 years. The early LDS ward schools gave way to a public school in 1901 when the handsome Woodward School was constructed on the town square. It included two years of high school. In 1908 church leaders from St. George and Salt Lake City undertook plans for an academy like those in other Mormon communities. The Salt Lake authorities agreed to allocate $20,000 if the members of the St. George LDS Stake would raise $35,000 to build a college structure. The sacrifices of the people to build and equip the building have become legendary. That spirit of community contribution still serves as the inspiration to sustain the present institution. This story testifies that the College came about from the community's desire for learning and that drive is still fundamental. On September 19, 1911, the College opened while the carpenters were still completing the building. Initially it was called the St. George Stake Academy (and later nicknamed Dixie Academy), but in 1916 the name became Dixie Normal College, in 1923, Dixie Junior College, in 1970 Dixie College, and in 2000, Dixie State College of Utah. Its initial 42 students partook of a curriculum which included Algebra, Domestic Art, Domestic Science, Economics, English, Geometry, Ancient and Modern History, Physiography, Physiology, Physics, Theology and Music.

October 2001 A new goal is challenging teachers: All students, with or without disabilities, including English language learners and students who are "falling between the cracks," are to achieve in the general education curriculum. For students with disabilities, access to the general education curriculum is mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amendments of 1997 (IDEA '97). Successful student access to the curriculum comes about through the implementation of validated programs and procedures. It calls for a paradigm shift that is required in the law: the student (if appropriate), special and general education teachers, parents, a district representative, and representatives of other agencies necessary to best serve the student's needs are required to take part in the student's educational planning, with improved learning in the general education curriculum as a goal. This digest discusses changes needed to bring about successful student access to the curriculum-changes in attitudes and belief systems, parent involvement, pre-service training, and ongoing professional development, as well as increased support from districts and state legislators. Within this background of support from a larger educational community, teachers must work together to apply well-founded, research-based instructional practices in their classrooms.

Student leaders from Utah's universities and colleges met with state lawmakers Wednesday to voice concerns over recent tuition hikes. The students spoke before the joint higher Education Appropriations Subcommittee and presidents of several universities who met to discuss problems facing Utah's higher education system. "We are concerned not only with the dramatic increase in tuition, but also the general trend of increase," said Billy Edwards, student body president at the University of Utah. Utah's Board of Regents raised tuition at nine state universities and colleges Jan. 17. The hikes range from a six percent increase at the College of Eastern Utah to a 23.5 percent raise at Southern Utah University. The Board raised tuition by 50 percent over the last three years at Utah Valley State College.

CHOICE OF MAJOR
Medical schools do not prefer any specific major over another. Any major is appropriate as long as it is flexible enough to allow completion of all premedical requirements. About one half of our premeds are biology majors, 1/3 non-science, and the remainder major in some other science. Choose a major according to your strengths and interests. Secondly, because there are more qualified applicants than there are spaces available in medical school, a selected major should provide a basis for alternative career choices, if necessary.
REQUIRED PREMEDICAL COURSEWORK
(All required courses must be taken for a grade) Most med schools, including Utah, require that all premed coursework be completed at an accredited college or university in the U.S. or Canada The basic course requirements of the majority of medical schools include the following: Chemistry (2 years - chemistry for chem and science majors) Prereq: Math 1050
General Chemistry (1 year): (starts F, S, Su). It is suggested that this series be started the freshman year if the student has had adequate math preparation. For students who have not had any high school chemistry

Public Forum Utah Politics Online Poll ... Lifestyle School Choice
With a massive revenue shortfall and a funding crisis in education, now is not the time for Utah leaders to fixate on school choice, whether through tuition tax credits or by expanding the state's charter schools program.
The Employer's Education Coalition has recommended a package of improvements for public education, including two school choice components tuition tax credits and additional charter schools. Republican legislative leadership has embraced the coalition's report and plans are in the works to offer a bill this session adopting its many provisions. Several of the coalition's ideas could be implemented with limited fiscal impact on the state's schools. The same cannot be said for the school choice options.
Gov. Mike Leavitt is similarly supportive of the coalition's work, though he is more reticent about tax credits. Leavitt proposes expanding school choice by adding public charter schools, equalizing their funding and creating a revolving loan for charter building projects.
Charter schools are public schools open to all students, regardless of geography. Sponsors of a charter school apply for a charter from the local school district. If they are turned down, they may apply for one of the State Board of Education's 16 charters. The schools face fewer state rules and regulations, enabling them to limit class sizes and focus on specialized fields or alternative general education methods. The state's 11 operating charter schools enroll about 1,500 students.

The results are based on O*NET occupational attributes. Users can also ask for a Report, which they can view on their computer screen or print. It includes basic information about a particular occupation. They can select the items they want in the report, or they can choose the full (default) report.
