This is due in no small part to the certification regulations which went into effect on September 2, 1993 as well as the changes recently adopted by the Regents that go into effect in September 2004. This Bulletin describes those regulations which are currently in place. The purpose of this Information Bulletin is to summarize the information most commonly sought by members and local leaders. Please bear in mind that this Information Bulletin is for INFORMATION ONLY , and is not to be considered as an official interpretation of the rules and regulations of the Commissioner. Official answers on the interpretation of certification regulations and certification status can only be obtained from the Office of Teaching of the State Education Department (see sidebar for contact information). The project will capitalize on existing partnerships and create new alliances within the educational community, with parents and other consumers, and with other state agencies to improve the overall quality of services delivered to students with disabilities. The State Improvement Grant has three primary goals:
  • Implement a decision-making infrastructure that will systematically and progressively improve access to and quality of instructional services at every level of the state educational delivery system. Implement changes in policy, technical assistance to administrators, and personnel preparation activities to ensure that the students with disabilities have access to, placement in, and progress within the general curriculum.     North Carolina Licensure: Questions and Answers Who needs a license in North Carolina? All professional employees of public schools must hold a license for the subject or grade level they teach or for the professional assignment they hold. In what areas are licenses issued? Licenses are issued in administrative, supervisory, student service, and teaching areas. Teaching areas encompass birth through kindergarten, elementary (K-6), middle grades (6-9), secondary grades (9-12), special subjects (K-12), exceptional children (K-12), and vocational education. (See the complete list of individual areas below.) How do I qualify for a North Carolina license? The standard basis for license is the completion of an approved education program at an accredited college or university.     Scott Calahan Central Washington University In an effort to determine the status of teacher preparation, a survey was sent to all state driver education program directors. The names of the directors were obtained from a document prepared by the New Hampshire Department of Education in 1994 as a result of another survey. Forty-six of the 50 surveys were returned either by mail or phone response. State driver education program directors were asked to list the names of contact persons at each college and university within their state offering courses leading to credentials for teaching driver education. A second survey was then mailed to each of those institutions. A total of 50 surveys were compiled representing 33 different states.     Description
    The Department of Instructional Technology at Utah State University will be offering classes for School Library Media certification during the 1999-2000 school year over the URN Satellite System. The URN Satellite System is a one-way video, two-way audio, full-motion video network, operated by the State of Utah. Students throughout the state are able to attend weekly classes close to their residence or place of employment. Instructors are able to broadcast computer programs, slides, audio, videotape, and live overhead video as part of their presentations. Program
    The purpose of the School Library Media Certification program is to provide both pre- and in-service teachers with the courses necessary to meet the requirements for K-12 certification as a School Library Media Specialist in the State of Utah. In an effort to assist aspiring teachers, the State Board of Regents and the state of Utah created the Terrel H. Bell Teaching Incentive Loan Program (TIL). The TIL program has been designed to provide financial assistance to outstanding students pursuing a degree in teacher education.
    Program requirements are simple and ideal for students who are planning a career in the teaching profession. Below are just a few reasons why this program is so valuable to Utah students:
    • The TIL will fund full-time tuition and general fees for up to four years (eight semesters) or until the requirements of teacher certification have been met.
    • Program funds are only available for qualifying students who are Utah residents.
    • TIL funds may be used at any of Utah's participating institutions
    • After graduation and certification the loan may be forgiven if the recipient teaches in a Utah public or private school (K-12). Loan forgiveness is done on a year-to-year basis. Other loan repayment options are available if recipients do not wish to teach in Utah.

Thus, the use of the word Montessori is no assurance of quality. If you want to enroll your child in a Montessori school it is important that you learn what a Montessori school should be like, and then observe children working in the school you are considering. In a good school there will be:
  • A certified Montessori-trained adult, the teacher and preferably also the administrator. The teacher or
