The rest includes fertile river valleys and the foothills of high mountain ranges. Uzbekistan borders Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and the Aral Sea. About 24 million people live in the country, which is, geographically speaking, slightly larger than the state of California. Tashkent, the capital and largest city, has a population of two million. Roughly 80% of the population is Uzbek; other major groups are Russians, Tajiks, Kazakhs, Karakalpaks, and Tatars. Uzbek has recently been declared the national language, though Russian is still widely spoken throughout the country, especially in the cities. There is little precipitation, low humidity, and lots of sunshine all year. Winters are cold, while summers can be severe, with temperatures reaching 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Economy In the view of some economic experts, Uzbekistan has the greatest economic potential in Central Asia. The country has an abundant variety of natural resources, including large reserves of salts, aluminum, semiprecious and precious stones, natural gas, coal, oil, and especially gold. Cotton, rice, grapes, vegetables, melons, and cattle-breeding, are the leading areas of agricultural production.

The ancient Uzbek engineers created sparkling blue and green tiled domes and thriving caravan cities. Volunteers living in this fascinating country will experience the richness of Uzbekistan's culture and the warmth of its people. A former republic of the Soviet Union, Uzbekistan declared independence in August 1991. A year later the government issued an invitation to the Peace Corps, and the first group of Volunteers arrived in December 1992. Ten years later, the efforts of Volunteers to develop ties of friendship and understanding continue to pave the way for future work in this country. Peace Corps Volunteers work in three program areas in Uzbekistan: English Education and Resource Development; Business Education and Development; and Health. In addition, Volunteers across all sectors have applied ingenuity and creativity to their secondary projects, which are special activities that Volunteers initiate that fall outside their main assignment areas. The lives of Uzbekistanis and Volunteers alike have been enriched by numerous "secondary" projects, such as regional craft centers, Earth Day celebrations, and local baseball leagues. From ancient times, the wealth of the land attracted foreign conquerors. In the third and fourth centuries B.C., Central Asia was conquered by the Macedonians. Conquest by Alexander the Great had a great effect on the economic and cultural development of the peoples of the East, West and Central Asia. In the middle of the third century B.C., the conquered regions became independent and local dynasties came to power. Bactria, which included the southern parts of Uzbekistan and Tadjikistan, became the hub of the Greek- Bactrian empire and later came under control of the Kushan empire. After the conquest of Central Asia by Alexander the Great, studies of the subsequent period depict development and the heyday of architecture, painting, handcrafts, and music. During the seventh and eighth centuries, Central Asia was conquered by the Arab Khalifat. The Arabs took over these countries under the mission of spreading the new religion of Islam. As a result, their conquest entirely changed the region's way of life. Building construction, art and science declined under the pressures of war and continued only in the middle of the nineth century. This was connected with the creation of independent empires ruled by the dynasties of the local aristocracy: the Tahirids and Samanids. A Quick Look at the Culture of Uzbekistan By Artur Stepanyan My name is Artur. I live in the Republic of Uzbekistan, which used to be part of the Soviet Union. This picture was taken with my family. Behind my family you can see the back of the little shops. These are called Tabasco shops. Usually they are open 24 hours a day. They sell sack food, cigarette, pop, and alcohol. Uzbekistan has an interesting culture and very special people. The capital of Uzbekistan is Tashkent. Tashkent is the fourth biggest city in Russia. The president of Uzbekistan when I left home in 1996 was Islam Karimov. The population in the capital is 2.8 million people. After the Soviet Union broke up, Uzbekistan became an independent republic. The economy has been growing very fast for the last four years. Uzbekistan has attracted a few big international companies like IBM, Coca Cola, Daewoo, etc. Uzbekistan is a country full of history. There are old cities such as Samarkand and Shahrezybs where you will find many traditional buildings, statues and monuments. Visitors in those cities are always welcome. Each year tourists from all over the world come to visit. The most interesting place for tourists, I think, is the farmers’ market. The markets give them a big choice of the greatest fresh fruits and vegetables. The average family has three or four children. My family is not too big. I have a brother who is 15 and, of course, a mother and a father. My mother is a professor at the university. She specializes in literature and Russian language. My father owns a food company. My brother is a student in high school. I am studying at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in the United States. My major is international law.

We - Uzbeks have an interesting rich cultural heritage from the merging of centuries old and modern civilizations. Wherever you come in Uzbekistan, Everywhere hospitable hosts will greet you, saying "Assalomu Alaykum!" It seems that there is nothing special when people greet their friends, relatives and guests. But in Uzbekistan, the greeting is something special. The words of the greeting follow in a definite order, for example: " Assalomu Alaykum! Yahshi yuribsizmi? Uyingizdigilar tinch-omon, yahshi yurishibdimi?" From Uzbek it means: "Hi! How are you? How are your nears and dears?" answering the questions the interlocutor shall ask the same questions. When men meet each other they shake their hands by putting their left hand on their heart, which means that the greeting comes from the deep heart. The best tradition of Uzbeks is hospitality. Everyone, regardless of position is always treated as if he was sent by God. Even the poor are always trying to share with travelers whatever they can offer and their only demand as payment for their hospitality is that traveler relates his stories to them. Curiosity is another feature of Uzbek people. They like to communicate with others and interact between themselves. They like meeting people and hope that by treating their guests warmly the gesture will be reciprocated. Another common pastime of Uzbek people, they like to spend their leisure time in bazaars and Choyhonas!
