Title: Invention, Institutionalization And Renewal In Uzbekistan's National Culture. Subject(s): POPULAR culture Russia (Federation) Moscow; REPRESSION (Psychology); NATIONALISM Russia (Federation) Moscow Source: European Journal of Cultural Studies, Sep99, Vol. 2 Issue 3, p355, 19p Author(s): Adams, Laura L. Abstract: Accounts of national renewal in the republics of the former Soviet Union tend to present these regions as awakening from a long slumber of cultural repression. In this paper I argue against this notion, examining the ways those Soviet cultural institutions developed some aspects of national culture in Uzbekistan while suppressing others. The effects of Soviet institutions and ways of thinking about culture are examined in the context of contemporary cultural production in Uzbekistan, specifically the production of national holiday spectacles. Based on observation of these events and on interviews with cultural elites, I outline Soviet schemas of culture and trace the effects of these schemas on the elite's conception and presentation of Uzbekistan's national culture today. Uzbekistan Culture Some of the world's most audacious and beautiful examples of Islamic religious buildings are to be found in Uzbekistan's Bukhara, Khiva and, especially, Samarkand. Most of the monumental mosques, minarets, mausolea and monasteries date from the time of the Timurids, great appreciators of glitzy, glazed goth-ish glories. Uzbekistan's folk art has tended towards the portable - clothes, arms, jewellery, weaving, embroidery and rugs - in tune with semi-nomadic living. Islam prohibits the depiction of the living, so traditional arts developed in the form of calligraphy, combining Islamic script with arabesques, and the carving of doors and screens. Painting was revived under the Soviets and became a curious hybrid of socialist realism and mock traditionalism - try smiling Ukbeks at a teahouse with futuristic chimneys thrusting skywards in the background. Uzbek men usually wear sombre colours, except for the bright-coloured sash which older men use to close their long quilted coats. Nearly all wear the dopy , a black, four-sided skullcap embroidered in white. Uzbek women are fond of dresses in sparkly cloth, often worn as a knee-length gown with trousers of the same material underneath. One or two braids indicate a married woman; more braids signify a single woman. Eyebrows that grow together over the bridge of the nose are considered attractive and are often supplemented with pencil for the right effect. Uzbek is the official language of Uzbekistan, though Russian is still the language of government and academia and Tajik is spoken in Samarkand and Bukhara.

While sparkling technique and superb lyricism may have helped win her the coveted title of People's Artist of Uzbekistan, it is Qizlarhon's command of subtle nuances which make her performances so memorable. Her name translated means something like "queen of all the girls" but when it comes to traditional elegance and femininity, Qizlarhon is queen of the dance. Qizlarhon began her dance training while still in childhood and started her professional career in 1965. Noted for her traditional styling and versatility, Qizlarhon's impressive repertoire includes all three of the Uzbek regional styles in addition to Tadjik, Afghan, Persian and Japanese choreographies. An accomplished actress, Qizlarhon expresses the emotions and thoughts behind her gestures, as well as sheer technical brilliance.

    Culture of Uzbekistan
The Uzbek Cuisine Tantalising with rich exotic flavours For those who do not know, Uzbek cuisine is one of the most colourful of Oriental Cuisines. You'll be amazed to find some of the Uzbek recipes are centuries old. They even have various traditional rituals and ways of the preparing and cooking. There are about 1,000 different dishes and these includes national drinsks, cakes and condectionary products. Uzbek plov is a very solemn dish. It can be considered an everyday dish as well as dish for solemn and great events like weddings, parties and holidays. Rise is the most important componentof plov and special spices, raisins, peas or quins will be added to give it extra flavour. It makes this dish very tasty and useful especially after long illnesses. However, locals believe that the best plov is always prepared by a man! Salads are served as additional dishes to the plov. Bread is considered to be holy for the Uzbek people. this traditional belief started in the ancient times and there's a legend behind this. The legend claims that each new Governor would mint his own coins but the payment for the local people for minting new coins were not the coins that were minted but...bread!

In New York, food helps evoke memories of Central Asian land
By Linda Morel NEW YORK, Sept. 17 (JTA) — “There is nothing like memories of the house where you grew up,” says Berta Shakarova, who was born in Bukhara, Uzbekistan. Eight years ago, she immigrated with her family to the bustling Bukharan Jewish community in Queens, New York. “You never forget the way your childhood house and neighborhood looked.” My husband shared her reaction when we recently visited his boyhood home in Forest Hills, and saw a brick wall near the sidewalk where shrubs once bloomed. He was equally surprised by changes in his old neighborhood, which coincidentally is Shakarova’s new one. When David grew up during the 1950s and 1960s, he circulated in an Ashkenazi world among Jews with roots from Central and Eastern Europe. Today, many of the Jews who inhabit the streets of his youth hail from further east, from the Central Asian countries of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, once republics of the former Soviet Union north of Afghanistan. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Bukharan Jews have sought a better life in Israel and the Queens neighborhoods of Kew Gardens, Rego Park and Forest Hills, now home to 50,000 of them.

"Lines of green and gold, and gold and green, beyond which the walls and minarets of Khiva appeared in sight. Can that really be Khiva? The scene filled one with a thrill of satisfaction. All past difficulties and discomforts were forgotten, and future one unthought of - the goal was reached." (Christie, 1925) For many, Uzbekistan is a land of legend. Its topography is a complex of great, stoney mountains, vast, sandy deserts, fertile, emerald river valleys and oases, which have traditionally divided the peoples dwelling there between sedentary farmers, craftsmen and merchants and nomadic herdsmen. At the very crossroads of Central Asia, Uzbekistan has been the home of many different people. Today the languages most commonly spoken there reflect the presence of Turkic, Iranian, and Slavic speakers. It was the birthplace and administrative center of Tamerlane's empire, which stretched from the borders of China, into India, across Iran to Turkey and up into the steppes of Russia. History has been writ large across the landscape of Uzbekistan. Alexander the Great and Ghengis Khan came here, while cities like Samarkand, Buhara and Khiva are enriched with magnificent buildings. The influx of wealth and artisans into today's Uzbekistan resulted in embellishment of the country with new mosques, caravansaries, schools and palaces.
