Under nearly constant warfare for the past 22 years, the landlocked Central Asian nation successfully fought off a nine-year invasion from the Soviet Union in 1989. Shortly thereafter, the rebel groups, or mujahadin, began fighting each other, culminating in a civil war that is still underway. The Taliban, a group of Islamic fundamentalists, controls 90% of Afghanistan, including the capital of Kabul. The allow Osama bin Laden, a former mujahadin soldier, to set up camp in Afghanistan as their "guest." Pakistan
Afghanistan's neighbor to the east, Pakistan was the United States' primary ally in Central Asia during the Cold War. Pakistan has been engaging in sporadic warfare with India for more than 40 years over the province of Kashmir, which each nation claims. Pakistan last made news in 1998, when it detonated a series of nuclear devices to match India's atomic capabilities. The subsequent international sanctions resulting from the tests have left Pakistan economically weakened. Now the leadership must balance a desire to assist the United States with the resulting backlash from Pakistani Islamic militants, who support the Taliban.

    Uzbekistan
Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Russia conquered Uzbekistan in the late 19th century. Stiff resistance to the Red Army after World War I was eventually suppressed and a socialist republic set up in 1925. During the Soviet era, intensive production of "white gold" (cotton) and grain led to overuse of agrochemicals and the depletion of water supplies, which have left the land poisoned and the Aral Sea and certain rivers half dry. Independent since 1991, the country seeks to gradually lessen its dependence on agriculture while developing its mineral and petroleum reserves. Current concerns include terrorism by Islamic militant groups from Tajikistan and Afghanistan, a non-convertible currency, and the curtailment of human rights and democratization. E-Notes
Geography and the Centers of Taliban Gravity
by Michael P. Noonan November 5, 2001 Michael P. Noonan is a research fellow on American defense policy at the Foreign Policy Research Institute. A month into the war on terrorism, criticism of the Bush administration has begun to mount. Critics on the left are decrying the loss of innocent lives; critics on the right are asking why more is not being done. Additional tensions arise over the question of whether the United States and Britain should continue the conflict through the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. And concerns grow over whether the Northern Alliance is the ally the United States needs on the ground. To date the combination of aerial bombardment, Northern Alliance ground assaults, and the deployment of a small number of American and British special operations personnel is not producing noticeable results in defeating the Taliban and al-Qaeda. Recent statements by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld suggest that the introduction of American and allied ground troops is now on the table. As the harsh Afghan winter approaches, however, the introduction of large numbers of ground troops may not be necessary to ensure victory. A limited but direct approach may plant the seeds for victory in Afghanistan come spring.
