History
Russia conquered Uzbekistan in the late 19th century. Stiff resistance to the Red Army after World War I was eventually suppressed and a socialist republic set up in 1925. During the Soviet era, intensive production of "white gold" (cotton) and grain led to overuse of agrochemicals and the depletion of water supplies, which have left the land poisoned and the Aral Sea and certain rivers half dry. Independent since 1991, the country seeks to gradually lessen its dependence on agriculture while developing its mineral and petroleum reserves. Current concerns include insurgency by Islamic militants based in Tajikistan and Afghanistan, a non-convertible currency, and the curtailment of human rights and democratisation.

http://www.umid.uz/Main/Uzbekistan/History/history.html
BRIEF HISTORY The history of Uzbekistan, its culture and statehood, foreign economic and social ties of the territory is more than 2.5 millennia. Uzbekistan's freedom loving population fought for its independence against all foreign invaders during centuries. Situated on the crossroads of the Great Silk Road, the region played an important role in the dialogue of different civilizations. Its flourishing in the ancient times, then during the reign of the Samanids and Timurids is connected with the involvement of the region in the international economic interrelations. As far back as in the pre-Islamic period, Zoroastrism the world spread religious system was born on the territory of the present day Uzbekistan (in Khorezm) and became common property of all mankind. There was formed the highest technological culture of those times: town-planning, irrigation systems, armory, silk-weaving, cultivation of grain, cotton, grapes and fruits. In those times local technologies and master-craftsmen (Ustos) were highly valued and appreciated. The synthetic character is rather typical for this particular civilization: Combination of achievements gained by the Sogdians, peoples of Khorezm, Turks, India, China, Iran, Middle East and by Hellenism. The religious extension of Islam to Maverannahr, accompanied by military invasions of the Arabs in the 7-8th centuries met with the resistance from the local religious tradition, embodied in the Zoroastrism of the Sogdians and Backtrians, Buddhism of the residents of Balkh and the Upper Amudarya, and the growing authority of the Christian communities. However later on the population of the region was convinced in the great cultural and moral possibilities of Islam.

    http://www.uzbekistan.gr/eng/history.htm
The General Consulate of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Greece
Since ancient times, the geopolitical location of Uzbekistan has been where the main caravan roads traversed to link Asia and Europe, predicating the historical richness of the land. The country is situated in the middle of Central Asia between the Amu-Darya and Syr- Darya rivers and was named "maa-waraa-nahr" by Arabs, meaning "a place between two rivers". From ancient times, the wealth of the land attracted foreign conquerors. In the third and fourth centuries B.C., Central Asia was conquered by the Macedonians. Conquest by Alexander the Great had a great effect on the economic and cultural development of the peoples of the East, West and Central Asia. In the middle of the third century B.C., the conquered regions became independent and local dynasties came to power. Bactria, which included the southern parts of Uzbekistan and Tadjikistan, became the hub of the Greek- Bactrian empire and later came under control of the Kushan empire. After the conquest of Central Asia by Alexander the Great, studies of the subsequent period depict development and the heyday of architecture, painting, handcrafts, and music. During the seventh and eighth centuries, Central Asia was conquered by the Arab Khalifat. The Arabs took over these countries under the mission of spreading the new religion of Islam. As a result, their conquest entirely changed the region's way of life. Building construction, art and science declined under the pressures of war and continued only in the middle of the nineth century. This was connected with the creation of independent empires ruled by the dynasties of the local aristocracy: the Tahirids and Samanids. In the l0th century, the Arabs were forced to withdraw their troops and the Samanids rose to power.

    on Demonopolization and Competition Development
For the first time a competition policy enforcement body in Uzbekistan was established in 1992 as a Main Department of antimonopoly and pricing policies of the Ministry of the Finance. It was given a function to oversee the observance of the antimonopoly legislation requirements.
In 1996 the Department was transformed into the Committee on demonopolization and competition development of the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and for the first time it was given a status of the legal entity though it still remained under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Finance. This arrangement was organized in such way mainly in the view of providing assistance from the part of the Ministry of Finance to the antimonopoly body in its duties. At same time the Committee was given additional functions and empowered to conduct a control over observance of the requirements of legislations on consumer rights protection, natural monopolies and advertising.
Thus, not only the legal status of the Committee changed - it’s functions were substantially extended. It was stipulated by interconnection and harmonious combination of all four laws.

    Uzbekistan Uzbekistan Early History
The wealth of Mawarannahr was a constant magnet for invasions from the northern steppes and from China. Numerous intraregional wars were fought between Soghdian states and the other states in Mawarannahr, and the Persians and the Chinese were in perpetual conflict over the region. Alexander the Great conquered the region in 328 B.C., bringing it briefly under the control of his Macedonian Empire. In the same centuries, however, the region also was an important center of intellectual life and religion. Until the first centuries after Christ, the dominant religion in the region was Zoroastrianism (see Glossary), but Buddhism, Manichaeism (see Glossary), and Christianity also attracted large numbers of followers. About Our Hotel
Let us introduce the history of "Farkhad and Maya's Bed and Breakfast" This house was built in 1875 by our great-grand father Sadullo-Khodja, who was a wealthy Bukhara merchant. During the Russian revolution in 1920 he was killed and the new state government confiscated his properties. His descendents were only allowed to keep one of the seventeen houses, the one in which we now reside. It used to be the women's quarter of a traditional Uzbek home. Our house is in the oldest and central section of Holy Bukhara, called Sufiyon, named after the founder of Sufism , Bakhautdin Naqshband. In this section used to live and continue to live peace-loving and educated people. Sufism - is religious direction of Islam from the 8th century. Sufism teaches the philosophy of the man and his attitude to the God, asceticism, pantheism and mysticism. Sufism has four basic conceptions. The Shariat is muslim legislation, indisputable discharge of its rules. The Tarikat is obedience of pupils to their teachers, and training of will power by giving up all the wealth on earth. The Marifat is the teaching of cognition via human soul, not via mind, the fact that the Universe unites in God, that the world is the embodiment of God and that "the good" and "the evil" are relative conceptions. The Khakikat is the achievement of "the truth cognition" and the God supposes the end of sufii's personality and his merging into the God. For this purpose suffis have to do meditation.

    The Country:
Useful Information for the Traveller Uzbekistan occupies the heart of the area of Central Asia historically known as Turkestan. Some of the earliest known inhabitants of this region were Indo-Iranians, who are thought to have migrated to the region around the second millennium b.c. By the 4th century b.c. , after the campaigns of Alexander the Great, trade along the Silk Road increased, and the area emerged as an important trading center; cultural contact intensified, and a variety of religions flourished. Dissatisfaction with Russian rule manifested itself in antichrist revolts, often led by religious figures, while a group of urban intellectual reformers, known as jadids, sought to improve the life of the local people through secular education. In the years leading up to the Bolshevik Revolution, the economic and political situation drastically deteriorated, and in the summer of 1916, major disturbances shook the region. Upon seizing power, the new Bolshevik leaders promised an end to Russia's colonial treatment of Turkestan; however, they demonstrated no willingness to allow meaningful political participation by the native population. Consequently, in November 1917, indigenous leaders convened an extraordinary congress in the city of Kokand, at which they proclaimed the autonomy of southern Central Asia. But in February 1918, Bolshevik troops sent from Tashkent brutally crushed the fledgling Kokand government. Over the next few years a guerrilla opposition movement of
