Tradition's New Faces
Influential but seldom seen, Vanuatu's art displays its power and potential in a thought-provoking Sydney show
By Michael Fitzgerald For a nation whose name means "the country that stands up," it's ironic that the art of Vanuatu has been best known through a small seated figure in the Picasso Museum of Paris. Given to the Spanish painter by Matisse, the red-nosed, bug-eyed female effigy called Nevimbumbao was a mysterious muse to some of the great developments of 20th century modernism. The art of Vanuatu-the eastern Melanesian island group between the Solomons, New Caledonia and Fiji-occupies a similarly obscure place in the world. "It's very powerful, very spiritual," says Kirk Huffman, co-author of Arts of Vanuatu (Crawford House). "From the point of view of the Pacific, it's possibly the least known." That's now changing. Like the towering, expressive-faced slit gongs that have become a national symbol since independence in 1980, Vanuatu's material culture is beginning to stand up and echo across the water. In 1997, an exhibition of exotic artefacts, many of them collected by the Swiss anthropologist Felix Speiser early last century, traveled to Basel's Museum der Kulturen and the Musée National des Arts d'Afrique et d'Océanie in Paris. "The visitor is struck not only by the great diversity of styles, but also by the materials used, in which the whole jungle seems present," marveled one reviewer. "Human skulls on wooden frames are overmodeled with plant-fiber paste, all sorts of leaves are applied as well as spider webs, wood, bark, stone and coral."

Île Malakula, Vanuatu
October 17 - 22, 1999 We really did not do this island justice. One could spend several months cruising here, but the pressures of returning to Port Vila, and the need to take the good wind when we could, meant we only had time for a few brief stops. We had Rob's birthday in Crab Bay with Klondike We arrived at Vao Island on a Sunday, and anchored behind a sand spit which had approximately 50 canoes beached there. We particularly liked were platforms with the ends of old canoes placed upside down for 'chicken houses'. The reason for so many canoes here is that the gardens for this densely populated island are on the mainland. Since no work takes place on Sunday, all the canoes were at the island. When we were sailing down between the islands the next day, we saw a beach on the mainland with canoes lined up, the dark asymmetrical shapes of the outriggers on the white sand looked just like a piano. Banam Bay has the Small Nambas Culture Club, and a guesthouse. Anyone interested in this aspect of Vanuatu culture should definitely put this spot on their itinerary and can make arrangements to do so from Port Vila. We also found the village interesting - watched them washing their clothes in springs that run out of the beach at low tide, enjoyed the pungent smell of cocoa drying in the sun, talked to the man who ran the local kava bar, and bought lovely bread made in a 'custom' oven. This stands as tall as a man, constructed of a coconut log frame filled with coral rocks. In the center of all this is a 44 gallon drum laying on its side and half filled with bricks. The end has been cut off and is wedged up as a door, using a stick and some burlap. The fire is built over the bricks, then the coals are removed once the oven reaches the desired temperature and the bread placed inside.

BABYSITTING
Resorts can arrange babysitting (as can word of mouth). The ni-Vanuatu women are traditionally shy with adults but terrific with children and cost around VT200 an hour. VT1000 per night is the usual fee. Top
BAKERIES
There are excellent pastries and bread products to be found in Vanuatu. La Parisienne and Ah Pow Bakeries are the two largest bakeries. La Parisienne has wonderful meat pies and opens all night, which is handy for a snack on the way home after a big night. Curiously, they close from 12 noon to 3:00pm. For petite délice etc try Au Péché Mignon. Bâtards and rolls are fresh and tasty but the sliced bread does not have the freshness or staying power some would expect because they don’t use preservatives. Top
BALI HA’I
Bali Ha’i was the name James A. Michener gave to Ambae in his Pulitzer Prize winning ‘Tales of the South Pacific’. He wrote the book while stationed on Santo as a lieutenant during World War II, looking out to Ambae Island, his personal Bali H’ai - Coconut palms nodding gracefully toward the ocean. Reefs upon which waves broke into spray and inner lagoons, lovely beyond description. I wish I could tell you about the sweating jungle, the full moon rising behind the volcanoes. If you try, you’ll find me

We collect in this page videos recorded in Vanuatu islands other than Tanna. All videos were recorded with a digital videocamera, and reduced to a MPEG format for Stromboli On Line. As usual, you can see the videos by clicking on each thumbnail. The filesizes are indicated in the captions. A good soundtrack is available only when it makes sense ;-). 16 July 2000. Ambrym Island. In Mbwelesu crater, often considered part of a "volcano" called Marum, a lava lake was observed until last year. Now unfortunately the activity is only fumarolic. In the foreground, a mud pond... also inactive :-(. The name "mbwelesu" means "pig" in the local language. The pig is very important in Vanuatu culture. (not much action, but it's only 580 KB :-).
16 July 2000. Ambrym Island. Not far away from Mbwelesu (the pig) we find another crater, called Niri Mbwelesu, which means "the female of the pig". Here we cannot see the bottom of the pit, and the degassing is more violent. For the sake of completeness, we must inform you that the family also includes a son, Niri Mbwelesu Taten (the son of the female of the pig), which you can admire in Marco's photo page. (500 KB).
17 July 2000. Ambrym Island. After six days spent camping in the Ash Plain, we run down towards Lalinda, and towards a swim! "Only" a short path in the jungle (from 2h30m to 5h depending on the condition of your back ;-). Finally, after all the virtual climbs, in this video you can see a sample of the descent in the jungle. Looks like a videogame! (2.7 MB)

http://maven.english.hawaii.edu/celebrate/molisa.htm
At the age of 10, Grace Molisa entered St. Anne's School, Torgil, on Ambae. She had already learned to read and write in Ambae. Her upbringing, steeped in both Ambae tradition and Anglo-Christian culture, has sharpened her sensitivity to the Ni-Vanuatu human condition and what she believes to be right for the Ni-Vanuatu and for Vanuatu. These convictions inform her work as an educator, facilitator, developer, and promoter of Melanesian and Ni-Vanuatu culture. She was the first woman to address the Vanuaaku Pati Congress, the only woman member of the National Constitution Committee, and a signatory to the Constitution of the Republic of Vanuatu in 1979. Her recent books include Human Rights Toksave The Blackstone Calendae Womens Appointments Files (1998), and Pacific Paradaes (1995). She is convinced that what Ni-Vanuatu women need is encouragement, opportunity, and training, in that order. Language, Gender, and Human Rights

History created at Wunpuko 7 January 2002 . The Hon Sela Molisa, Minister for Finance launched two books in the Chiefs nakamal at Wunpuko Village North West Santo on Saturday 4 January 2003, the first anniversary of his wife, Grace Mera Molisa's death. "This is a historic occasion, because it is the first time that the first launch of two books has been held outside one of the main town centres in Vanuatu", the Minister said. "In our ni-Vanuatu culture we have always recognised the importance of history through our oral traditions. However, now we are in a modern society we must start to write our history down.'' "Grace valued history and was always writing, sometimes getting up early in the morning to write. It is thus fitting that we launch these books at the occasion of the first anniversary of her death", he said. More than 250 people attended the ceremony, which took place prior to the dedication of the grave of Grace and her father in law, Mandei Rongtuhun, who died shortly after her on 31 January 2002 in Port Vila. The two graves lie side by side behind Sela Molisa's house at Wunpuko. The crowd included all community leaders, chiefs and church leaders from every village around North West Santo - from the two Presbyterian sessions: Rua, Session around the cape into Big Bay, Malavuko to Molpoi, and Potunpei Session, from Olboi to Petowat. Representatives of the Trinity and the Praise and Worship congregations also attended.

  • More resources should be allocated to the education system to cater for the school age population which is growing at 4.5% per year. Need for better management of the in-take into secondary schools to fully utilise existing schools with the current low student-teacher ratio. Increase female participation in secondary schools and post-secondary institutions. Government, women, church groups, chiefs and NGOs must collaborate to find solutions to the gender problem. Co-ordinate efforts to increase the literacy rate through formal and non-formal mechanisms. Encourage and support Non-formal education to provide this service.
  • 2 Financing of Education
  • Merging smaller schools into community schools to reduce costs. Concentrating resources rather than spreading is more likely to improve the quality of education. Review the free education policy. Develop a school fee structure. Awareness that it is government policy that school maintenance is the responsibility of the community. Encourage the development of privately or community financed schools and develop a policy on cost sharing arrangements with existing non-government education providers such as the churches.

One of the most heart stopping, awe inspiring experiences is on Tanna Island and a tour to Mt Yasur, the volcano. You can actually hike to the very rim of the volcano. Peering over the rim of the crater, there are several pools of molten lava. Then the ground rumbles. And you feel it through every part of your being. Smoke builds in the crater, the rumble tuns into a roar and then the eruption. Red fire spews hundreds of feet into the sky, illuminated against the black of night. You jump back, sure the lava will land where you stand, only to creep forward and peer over the rim once again.
Port Vila is the international gateway for Vanuatu and is the more developed of the islands. There is a wide range of accommodation from the overwater bungalows at the Meridien, to the convenient Kaiviti Village Motel, to the offshore resorts of Iriki Island, or Hideaway. There are great restaurants, nightlife, shopping and activities such as sailing or snorkeling cruises and even golf.
Diving, of course, is another attraction of the country. There are dive operations associated with most of the island resorts, as well as an in town operator that is a full service PADI facility. For more serious divers, however, a visit to the island of Santo is recommended. Any serious wreck divers will want to spend several dives on the President Coolidge. The ship is easily accessible and offers many different dive profiles due to its sheer immensity. Be sure to include a dive to see The Lady, located in one of the main

The Republic of Vanuatu is located 2,400 km northeast of Australia, and is a chain of about 80 volcanic islands in the SW pacific Ocean. The Republic is governed from Porta Vila. Vanuatu gained its independence in 1980. It has a political and legal system that closely follows the UK system being a parliamentary democracy with the law based on English law. Traditionally the economy was based on agriculture (copra, cocoa, coffee, beef), fishing and mining (manganese) and recently tourism has grown in importance. In 1992, legislation was put in place to develop Vanuatu as an international business central. The official languages of Vanuat are French and English, and the currency is the Vatu.
