Traditional 'Arts' in Vanuatu By Kirk W. Huffman
Published online 17/10/00 Trying to define art within the complex contexts of Vanuatu society and kastom
A straightforward word for 'art' can hardly be found amongst the 113 indigenous languages of Vanuatu. The 'European' concept of 'art' is much too simple for the country's numerous profound cultures, as is the 'European' concept of an 'art' piece unlinked to deep ritual experience and spiritual meaning. Thousands of objects of ritual and material culture from Vanuatu are held in museums worldwide, but many such pieces are still being produced in their home islands today for the same ancient ritual purposes. More than most Pacific islanders, Ni-Vanuatu have, in general, managed to retain a strong sense of their traditional cultural identities, and the struggle for independence in the 1970s (leading to Independence from Britain and France in 1980) was really fueled by the desire to retain their languages and cultures and to reclaim alienated land. Although Christianity is widely spread throughout the 83 inhabited islands, it has done relatively little to displace traditional beliefs in the spirit world, some isolated areas refusing to convert to Christianity at all and many areas combining traditional ritual and Christianity in a sophisticated and successful way to enhance relevance and meaning for all. Unfortunately many early white missionaries (and even some of the newer 'fundamentalist' churches today) have tried to destroy Ni-Vanuatu traditional artistic expression along with the traditional cultures, but the culturally vibrant nation of today shows that in most of the country these short-sighted attempts have been futile.

82. Yachting World, The Cruising Sailor's Home Base In Vanuatu
Their sense of community and culture give the nivanuatu people a kind of peaceand friendliness that extends to visitors and residents from other lands.

Vanuatu, the highlight of your cruising experience Lautoka, Fiji to Port Vila 3.6 days 522nm Bay of Islands, NZ to Port Vila 8 days, 1100 nm Bundaberg Port Marina to Port Vila 7 days 1080 nm Noumea to Port Vila 2 days 344 nm No Matter how long it takes you to sail here, or which way you come, you'll be glad to arrive in the South Pacific's favorite cruising destination. Vanuatu has over 80 islands and the brand new Cruising Guide to Vanuatu lists 138 anchorages for you to explore. Cruising is easy here, the water is deep and clear, there are good anchorages where you can sleep at night and you can day-hop from one end of the country to the other. You'll see dugongs and eagles, waterfalls and virgin forests, volcanos and blue holes, and set in the midst of this ancient wilderness you'll find a culture rich with dance, art, and magic. Vanuatu, nearly every cruising yacht agrees, is the highlight of any Pacific cruising adventure. You'll be back again and again, because there is simply too much to see and do for just one cruise. Vanuatu is an independent democratic republic . The capital of Vanuatu is Port Vila, on the island of Efate. As you can see from the space photograph of Efate, most of the islands are covered with lush green tropical forests. Except for two urban areas, Port Vila and Luganville on Santo, the small population of people lives in rural villages.

Informations pratiques Les collections

These might be the Improbable Isles of Oceania. From the last of the Conquistadors to the last of the cannibals - whose most recent feast was only 20, or perhaps ten, years ago - Vanuatu spans a Melanesia of kastom villages and five-star resorts, of "nambas" (the world's briefest underpants) and tax-haven bankers.
The Vanuatu archipelago (previously known as the New Hebrides) and its far-from-identical Melanesian "twin", New Caledonia were both named in 1774 by Captain James Cook, who maintained the "Anglophoney" tradition of giving improbably European names to far shores that bore no resemblance to their namesakes.
Thereafter, the French and British, and their proxies - missionaries, planters and traders - poked tongues at each other for years in both the New Hebrides and New Caledonia. In a gesture of schizophrenic accord, the 83 islands of the New Hebrides were eventually lumbered with a dual Anglo-French administration, known as the Condominium (aka the Pandemonium), that lasted from 1906 until independence in 1980. With a new government came a new name, Vanuatu, which means "Land Eternal".
