Language Volcanoes European History ... Tanna Vanuatu is a "Y" shaped archipelago of volcanic islands and submarine volcanoes in the South Pacific Ocean, stretching from 13.2' to 20.5' South to 166.2' to 170' East. The total number of islands exceeds eighty, though many are no more than small islets or rocky outcrops. Of these, there are thirteen major islands, nine home active volcanoes. Vanuatu is 2,172 kilometers (1,303 miles) northeast of Sydney and 5,750 kilometers (3,450 miles) southwest of Honolulu. Fiji lies to the east, New Caledonia to the south, and the Solomon Islands to the northwest, all within the area of the South Pacific called Melanesia. The northernmost island is Hiu and lies just a few miles south of the Solomon's southernmost islands of Santa Cruz. Officially, Vanuatu's southern most island is Aneityum, however it also claims Mathew and Hunter Islands further to the south (disputed by New Caledonia). These two islands are nothing more than a rocky outcrop and smoking volcano, but 'ownership' of them would extent the Maritime economic zone considerably, as Vanuatu claims an exclusive economic zone of 200 nautical miles. (Territorial sea: 12 nm).

    Introduction
Vanuatu is a country in the southwest Pacific Ocean that is made up of more than 80 separate islands. Some of the islands include Espiritu Santo, Malekula, Efate, Erromango, and Tanna. The islands are now an independent country, but they used to be called the New Hebrides islands and were under the rule of Great Britain and France. There are several active volcanoes in the Vanuatu islands.

    GALLERIES
There are a number of galleries including Michoutouchkine and Pilioko, L’Atelier Art Gallery and Diana Tam’s home studio and gallery in Ellouk (just down the lagoon from the Erakor Wharf and Crowne Plaza). Top
    GAMBLING
The biggest gambling in Vanuatu is online with some major players basing their organisations in Port Vila because of the low tax system. For offline gambling there are poker (slot) machines at Club 21 (above the Sunset Bar at the Melanesian), Club Vanuatu (upstairs and downstairs) and upstairs at Palms Casino (Le Meridien). Downstairs at Palms are roulette, blackjack and other tables. Top
    GAME FISHING
There are game fishing charter boats for hire – head to the Waterfront Bar and Grill and ask Don or Donna (the owners). You would be very unlucky to return without a catch and could be lucky enough to find marlin and fighting tuna. The boat ‘owns’ the catch, but the Waterfront will cook it for you that evening. The guys from Get Wet on Erakor (and soon from Chantillys) are experienced and pretty much guarantee a catch – depending on how many are caught, you may be able to take your fish with you - handy if your accommodation has barbecues. For the ultimate fishing trip you can charter Jackpot for the week and travel the islands in style. Jackpot is a fully equipped dive and fishing boat that sleeps eight. Top
    GARDENS
While the tropics are lush, there are not many spectacular gardens as such if you like lots of flowers. Yes, hibiscus bushes abound, but the flowers only last a day or so. Best to visit somewhere like the Mele Botanical Gardens where they have many examples of local flora.
