Geography Vanuatu is a Y-shaped group of islands located in the South Pacific Ocean (the Coral Sea) about 1,800 km (1,100 miles) east of Australia. It is approximately 14,760 sq/km in land mass. The chain extends about 400 miles north to south between latitudes 13 and 21 degrees south and runs between longitudes 166 and 171 degrees east. There are 12 main islands and approximately 65 smaller islands. The two main towns are Vila (Port Vila), the capital on Efate (population 20,000) and Luganville (also called Santo) on Espirito Santo (population 7,000). Other large islands: Malakula, Malo, Aoba, Maewo, Pentecote, Malakula, Ambrym, Epi, Erromango, Tanna, and Anatom. Efate is the island Captain Cook called Sandwich, after Lord Sandwich. Time is Greenwich Mean Time plus 11 hours.

Vanuatu is a chain of approximately 80 islands in the south-west Pacific, some 2,250 km north-east of Sydney, Australia and 800 km west of Fiji. The islands lie between the latitudes of 13° and 21°, and the climate varies from tropical in the north to sub-tropical in the south. The total land area is approximately 14,800 sq. km. The islands are mainly of volcanic origin, the surface is highland (up to 1,810 m), and there are about 60 volcanoes, 10 of which are active. The climate is tropical humid. The capital is Port Vila on the Island of Efate. The population is about 175,000. The official languages are English, French and Bislama (pidgin). The language of business and finance is mainly English.

FAQs Fiji is a group of tropical islands with magnificent surroundings. Fiji lies in the heart of the Pacific Ocean midway between the equator and the South Pole, and between longitudes 175 and 178 west and latitudes 15 and 22 south. Fiji’s Exclusive Economic Zone covers about 1.3 million square kilometres of the South Pacific Ocean. Fiji has two main islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Other main islands are Taveuni, Kadavu, Gau and Koro. Eighty three percent of the land is owned by indigenous Fijians while 9 percent is state owned land and eight percent is freehold land. Only 16 percent of Fiji’s land mass is suitable for agriculture and are found mainly along the coastal plains, river deltas, and valleys. Fiji’s capital is Suva and it is one of two cities in Fiji. The other is Lautoka and both are located on Viti Levu.
