Rome, the Eternal City
Written by Beth Garrett
Known around the world as the Eternal City, Rome has been the capital of united Italy since 1871. Beginning as far back as 753 BC and continuing into the 1800’s, everyone from the Etruscan kings to numerous popes wanted to call Rome their own. Because the city has had such a large amount of rulers, Rome is steeped in culture and history. Some of the world’s most beautiful and romantic ruins lay in Rome including the impeccably preserved Pantheon which was founded in 27 BC. The body of the famous artist Raphael is entombed here. Some of Rome’s most cherished testaments of time are now used for modern day cultural events such as the Baths of Caracalla. Each summer both locals and tourists flock to this area to enjoy opera performances. The saying, “All roads lead to Rome”, has been around almost as long as the city itself. It remains as true today as it did during the city’s earliest days. Every year hundreds of thousands of world travelers flock to this city that is located on the shores of the Tiber River in order to immerse themselves in the culture, sights and traditions.

After a series of attacks, occupations and invasions during the early centuries, Rome once again rose to power as the result of the popes settling in Avignon. Since the

VATICAN CITY - 3 February 2003 - 805 words Vatican releases 'Christian reflection on the 'New Age'
Today in the Holy See Press Office there was a conference to present the document: Jesus Christ, Bearer of Living Water. A Christian Reflection on the 'New Age' , prepared by the Pontifical Council for Culture and the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. Cardinal Paul Poupard, president of the council for culture and Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald, president of the council for interreligious dialogue, presided at the conference. They were joined by Fr Peter Fleetwood of the secretariat of the Council of European Episcopal Conferences and Teresa Osorio Goncalves, an official of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, who drafted the document. Cardinal Poupard, citing a recent editorial he wrote, said: "The phenomenon of the New Age, together with so many other new religious movements, is one of the most urgent challenges for the Christian faith. It is a question of a religious challenge and at the same time a cultural one: the New Age proposes theories and doctrines about God, man and the world, that are incompatible with the Christian faith. In addition, the New Age is both the symptom of a culture in deep crisis and the wrong answer to this situation of cultural crisis: to its restlessness and its questions, to its aspirations and hopes."
He stressed that today's document regards this phenomenon and offers Christian reflections on the 'New Age,' adding that "today, Western culture, often followed by many others, has gone from an almost instinctive sense of the presence of God to what is often called a more 'scientific' vision of reality." There are many reasons for this, he said, including the passage from traditional forms of religion to more personal and individual expressions of what is called "spirituality."

T ravel literature - city-guides This book is intended to be an introduction to the history of Rome and of the social life of its people from the days of the Etruscan kings to those of Mussolini. The "biography" not only provides for the general reader an outline of Rome's varied past, as well as character sketches of those who have played their parts in its long history and development, but it is also of practical use to all those who intend to visit or revisit the city, since the notes at the back contains information about all the buildings and treasures mentioned in the text. Introduction [Top of Page] Background:
Popes in their secular role ruled much of the Italian peninsula, including Rome, for about a thousand years, until 1870. A dispute between a series of popes and Italy was settled in 1929 by treaties that recognized the Vatican City as an independent sovereignty and gave Roman Catholicism special status in Italy. The US established formal diplomatic relationships with the Vatican in 1984. Present issues in the Vatican concern the ill health of Pope John Paul II, who turns 79 on 20 May 1999, inter-religious dialogue and reconciliation, and the adjustment of church doctrine in an era of rapid change. About 1 billion people worldwide profess the Roman Catholic faith. Geography

Catholic News Service VATICAN CITY (CNS) Five years after its launch, the Vatican's Web site has become one of the most visited in cyberspace, and its library of papal and Vatican documents grows more vast every day. Now the site's directors have taken some first tentative steps toward interactivity, a feature of cyber-society that often is taken for granted but for the Vatican represents a host of challenges and risks. As much as recent Vatican documents have stressed the need for the church at all levels to embrace the new media, the Vatican's historical caution and Italian-style bureaucracy have slowed its entry into the Internet age. The media's innate interactivity also challenges traditional models of church communication. One new experiment was launched on the Vatican Web site in late October: a revamped section dedicated to the Vatican library that offers a wealth of digital images of its more famous holdings, like ancient Bible manuscripts and letters written by Martin Luther and Michelangelo. At a press conference to announce the new section, officials also proudly disclosed plans to rework areas for the Vatican Museums and the Vatican archives. By mid-December, cyber-visitors should be able to tour the Vatican Museums online, said Archbishop Claudio Maria Celli, head of the office that oversees the Vatican's Web site.

Vatican City Art and Museum Musei Vaticani english - The founding of the Vatican Museums can be traced back to 1503 when the newly- elected Pope, Julius II, placed a statue of Apollo in the internal courtyard of the Belvedere Palace built by Innocent VIII; he brought the statue from the garden of his titular church of St. Peter in Chains. In 1506 the Laocoon was added to the collection, after its discovery on the Esquiline Hill before the eyes of Giuliano di Sangallo and Michelangelo Buonarroti. The Sistine Chapel english - Built between 1475 and 1483, in the time of Pope Sixtus IV della Rovere, the Sistine Chapel has originally served as Palatine Chapel. The chapel is rectangular in shape and measures 40.93 meters long by 13.41 meters wide, i.e. the exact dimensions of the Temple of Solomon, as given in the Old Testament. It is 20.70 meters high and is roofed by a flattened barrel vault, with little side vaults over the centered windows. Raphael - Stanze and Loggia english - Pope Julius II Della Rovere commissioned 25 year old Raphael Sanzio in 1508 to paint the frescos in his four room apartment on the top floor. Three of the rooms were of modest dimensions, while the fourth one was considerably larger; with the completion of the work, the rooms became known as "The Raphael Stanze"
