Vermont Market News:
Vermont Real Estate Trends And Prices
Brokers in many parts of Vermont continue to report that the Vermont real estate market is active. The following report on current trends and prices first appeared in the April - May 2002 edition of Vermont Property Owners Report
Buying Interest High, Inventory Low
But Some Price Increases Slow A Bit
Brokers around the state report that they are continuing to see eager buyers who are having to pick from a reduced inventory of properties for sale, but there are also indications that prices are not rising as quickly as they had been in recent years.
State statistics also show that both median and mean average prices of primary homes and vacation homes on under six acres are rising, though the rate of increase is not as great as last year.
Average prices for timberland have shown a particularly strong increase, with the mean price up 36% to $683 per acre and the median price up 11% to $783 per acre. But these figures only reflect the small number of sales registered in Jan. and Feb.
Nationally, existing home sales surged in January to a record seasonally adjusted rate of 6.04 million units, according to the National Association of Realtors (NAR). That followed relatively strong fourth quarter sales, despite the events of Sept. 11.

CRIMINAL CHARGES STILL PENDING AGAINST SUDBURY FATHER As reported in August, a Sudbury father, Kenneth Levine, faces up to 32 years in jail and fines up to $36,000 for claims that he set up a false residence in Castleton in order to send his two girls to school there. The case is still pending and a "status conference" is scheduled for Monday, November 25 in District Court. Concerned that some Otter Valley Union High School students were going to "get" his daughters if they went there, Levine rented a room in Castleton, registered to vote there, rented a post office box in the town and enrolled his daughters in the Castleton Village School.

Krishnas encourage disclosing abuse in sect's schools
But some critics suspicious of leaders' motives, willingness to change

10/20/98 By Jeffrey Weiss / The Dallas Morning News
The stories of abuse are numbingly familiar: religious leaders beating, raping and torturing children in their charge. What's more unusual is where the stories appear: the official journal of the faith whose leaders committed the abuse.
The ISKCON Communications Journal is published by the International Society of Krishna Consciousness, popularly known as the Hare Krishnas. The current issue describes in graphic detail life at Krishna boarding schools - the first school was in Dallas - during the 1970s and 1980s.
Krishna leaders say the public airing of this dirtiest of laundry is part of a concerted effort to accept responsibility and do what they can to redress the old wrongs.
"Child abuse thrives in secrecy," said Anuttama Dasa, the Krishnas' director of North American Communications. "We are trying to do the right thing and bring this out into the open."
Some who were abused are suspicious of the overtures. Maya Charnell is the co-founder of VOICE, an Internet news board for former Krishna students. She spent two years in the Dallas school in the 1970s and remembers senseless beatings and other abuse there and in other schools.

Transcript:
Following the scandals of child abuse in predominately Roman Catholic schools, the Hare Krishna movement now faces similar accusations. Indeed, the movement in the States could face extinction if the lawsuit alleging child abuse succeed. The organization, whose most famous member was George Harrison, is filing for bankruptcy protection under U.S. law. In the 1970s and 1980s there were many alleged cases of child abuse at the movement's boarding schools around the world. The $400 million lawsuit filed in Dallas is said considerably to exceed the value of the movement's assets. This report by Stephen Perry begins with one of the alleged victims of abuse.

Florida's Legislature and Governor have enacted two statewide programs that let parents use tax support to enroll their children in private religious and non-religious schools. • Students are eligible for the A+ Opportunity Scholarship Program (A+OSP) if their assigned public school is designated "failing" for two years in a four-year period as determined by the Florida Department of Education. The scholarship is worth up to $3,500 and is valid through the highest grade served by the failing school. Parents may enroll eligible students at private schools or at other public schools. In 2000-01, 51 Pensacola students attended five private schools and 85 Pensacola students attended other public schools. On October 3, 2000, the First District Court of Appeal for the State of Florida ruled that the A+ Program was consistent with Article IX, Section 1 of the Florida Constitution. That provision requires the State of Florida to maintain a uniform system of free public schools.

HEADLINE: Hare Krishna Movement Details Past Abuse at Its Boarding Schools
BYLINE: By LAURIE GOODSTEIN
In its own official journal, the Hare Krishna movement has published an unusually candid expose detailing widespread physical, emotional and sexual abuse of children who were sent to live in the group's boarding schools in the United States and India in the 1970's and 1980's.
Parents were often unaware of the abuse because they were traveling around soliciting donations for their guru's books, in airports and on the streets, leaving their children in the care of Hare Krishna monks and young devotees who had no training in educating children and often resented the task, the report says.
The movement's leadership was first forced to confront the victims of abuse at a meeting in May 1996, when a panel of 10 former Krishna pupils testified that they had been regularly beaten and caned at school, denied medical care and sexually molested and raped homosexually at knife point.
"I remember being made to sleep naked in a cold bathtub for a month," Jahnavi Dasi, 26, who was sent to a Krishna boarding school in Los Angeles at age 4, said in an interview yesterday. "I had wet my bed, and it was easier for them to make me sleep in the tub than to change my sheets."
