Vermont – A State Unit Study This mini unit on VERMONT uses the cross curricular approach to education. There are several activities from different academic subjects for you to choose from. One of the most important things is to have fun! Below are some activities to help you study VERMONT. You may choose to do all, some, or none of the activities. You can also alter the activities to better suit your individual child’s needs. Some of these activities overlap each other, choose the one you think that you and the children will enjoy most. The main point of this unit is to make learning about VERMONT and enjoyable for all who are participating. Vermont’s State Flag Placed on a white field is a circle of thirteen gold stars representing the first thirteen states. The stars surround a gold ship's anchor. The states motto " Hope" is on a blue ribbon below the anchor. Create a State “Infodesk”: Before you begin this unit you may want to set up a research area. Place a desk or table in front of a bulletin board area. This will be where you can place relevant books, magazines, photographs, posters, newspaper articles, maps, scrapbooks, games, puzzles, computer software, task cards, travel brochures, etc. that you collect. Print a blank map of the state, or draw one on tag board, that you can place on the bulletin board. As you study the political and physical features of the state, have the children fill in the name of the state capital, large cities, and major geographical features. Color the map using different shades for varying elevations.

ELECTRONIC RECORDS MANAGEMENT IN VERMONT To Table of Contents INTRODUCTION:
Vermont's cities and towns, like many organizations, are creating and maintaining more and more of their records in electronic format. Examples of electronic records and other information that may be kept by municipal officials include grand list databases, town websites, digitized land records, online dog license information, public meeting minutes, and various forms of email correspondence. Given the importance of the municipal level of government in Vermont, proper management is essential for the integrity, security, and accessibility of these electronic records and resources. The Electronic Records Management Working Group was formed by the Center for Rural Studies as part of a grant from the Vermont Historical Records Advisory Board . The goals of the grant are to provide education and training for those Vermont municipal officials and employees who are responsible for maintaining and preserving records in electronic format and to identify and create resources pertaining to electronic records management. The working group is made up of representatives from various Vermont municipalities as well as the Center for Rural Studies, the Vermont Municipal Clerks and Treasurers Association, the Vermont League of Cities and Towns Vermont Public Records , and the Vermont Secretary of State's Office For more information on the working group and electronic records management in Vermont, contact Chip Sawyer, Center for Rural Studies, at

Tax Equalization - Vermont Fails to Meet Minimal Standards: See also: (10/14/99) Vermont scrapped the troublesome state property tax and adopted a state income tax in 1931 (details on that here ). With the introduction of Act 60 in 1997, however, property taxes have once again become the largest single state tax source in Vermont. It also turns out that Vermont's reliance on property taxes as a revenue source is far and away above the national average. According to the most recently published national statistics , property taxes in Vermont are 42.6 percent above the national average on a per-capita basis, and 55.5 percent above on an income basis. Vermont also uses the property tax to redistribute wealth to a far greater extent than any other state in the union. In view of this heavy dependence on the property tax, the state certainly has a legal obligation to ensure that property taxes are fairly and consistently apportioned. Vermont would also seem to have a vital interest in maintaining a system that can withstand legal challenges in court. But in reality, it appears the majority in the legislature cut a few corners in the rush to enact Act 60. During the brief four month period between the Brigham decision and the passage of Act 60, and indeed up to the present time more than two years later, there has been

John J. Easton, Jr. (1981-1985). Boards and Commissions:
These are primarily records from special focus boards and commissions that no longer exist, though there are some ongoing series. See the Governors' records for related records on Boards and Commissions. Constitution:

A Course of Action for State and Local Governments
Back Potential Benefits A Course of Action
There are several steps that states and localities take when preparing to act on climate change. They can start by establishing a task force or advisory group to guide the process of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Government agencies, the private sector, local nongovernmental organizations, and others should be involved.
Then they can conduct outreach efforts, including educating the public and working with the private sector to determine possible voluntary actions that they can take. State and local governments also can do outreach to specific groups that might be especially vulnerable to the risks of climate change or have a particular interest in the issue.
They can develop an inventory of their sources and sinks of greenhouse gas emissions. The inventory provides a baseline to measure future changes in their emissions and is a critical step toward developing comprehensive climate change policies and strategies. State inventories also help states identify the most effective opportunities to reduce emissions. The

These state and local government examples demonstrate the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of a variety of methods to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Each case study features a description of the project and, if available, quantitative results in terms of emissions reductions, energy savings, and costs. The case studies also identify individuals involved in managing and implementing the projects, and provide contacts for additional information.
Case Studies on Landfill Gas Utilization

Provided by EPA's Landfill Methane Outreach Program , these case studies detail how industry, energy marketers, states, and communities successfully implemented projects that reduced greenhouse gas emissions associated with landfills. They include project descriptions, benefits, lessons learned and contact information.
    Additional Sources for Case Studies
    ACE
(American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy) presents a number of case studies of projects that have combined energy efficiency measures with pollution prevention strategies within industry.
