This site is listed in the BBC Education Web Guide. Begin your journey on the internet with The Rail. This is junction 1360 on "The Science Expedition". Governments play numerous roles in nuclear energy and radioactive waste management. On one hand, they may be active promoters of nuclear energy in many countries. On the other hand, they are also the regulators of things nuclear. This dual role often leads to complex relationships and overlaps between various government departments or ministries. The situation can become even more complicated when several government agencies claim jurisdiction over different (or sometimes the same) aspects. To complete the picture, you often have to add in different levels of government (e.g. local, regional, state, and national). An important point to remember is that the regulatory framework and laws are different in each country. International

December 1999 This Digest is concerned with an important but under-recognized issue confronting the field: the need to develop standards and infrastructures for improving the employment, placement, preparation and supervision of paraeducators in inclusive general and special education classrooms, Title I, multilingual/ESL, and early childhood programs. Paraprofessional, teacher aide/assistant, transition trainer, home visitor, education technician, therapy aide/assistant are some of the other titles assigned to school employees:
    • whose positions are either instructional in nature or who provide other direct services to children, youth and/or their families
    • who work under the supervision of teachers or other professional practitioners who are responsible for the design, implementation, and assessment of learner progress and the evaluation of learning programs and related services for children, youth and/or their families (Pickett, 1989).

    Edward Delhagen: ed@vsjf.org
Wayne Fawbush: wayne@vsjf.org VSJF has developed a wide-ranging network of partners in the public and private sectors. This approach clearly benefits our projects because we can offer a broader range of resources. In addition, this provides VSJF the opportunity to share its approach to development with other public and private economic development practitioners. These partnerships also provide learning opportunities for VSJF and we have benefited from their examples as well. This network is a primary reason for the success of our program, and ultimately these partners are critical to the success of projects and our efforts towards a sustainable Vermont.

    STATE EDUCATION ACCOUNTABILITY SYSTEMS
    Historical Profiles
More recent accountability profiles are available from the Consortium for Policy Research in Education Introduction Alabama Maryland ... North Carolina Introduction The Resource Center on Educational Equity of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), in collaboration with the New England Comprehensive Assistance Center, has developed profiles of state education accountability systems. They are comprised of information about
    • statewide content and student performance standards statewide student assessments criteria to determine whether schools and school districts are in need of improvement or eligible to receive rewards how school and district performance is publicized the provision of rewards to schools and school districts actions at the local level to assist schools in need of improvement achieve satisfactory status actions at the state level to assist both school districts and schools in need of improvement to achieve satisfactory status corrective actions where schools or school districts in need of improvement have not made adequate progress or failed to meet other criteria for improvement
Several states have developed accountability systems on their own initiative, as part of their state school improvement planning. However, the standards, assessments, and other actions and processes referred to above also are required under Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act as amended by the Improving America's Schools Act of 1994. As reflected in these profiles, some states have integrated implementation of these requirements with their statewide accountability systems while others have separate systems in whole or in part.
