For what geographic areas does the Census Bureau produce estimates?
In addition to the Nation, the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, PEP produces estimates for census regions and divisions, counties and equivalents, incorporated places, minor civil divisions, consolidated cities, and metropolitan areas.
Census Regions and Divisions
Counties (and equivalents)
Minor Civil Divisions
Legally defined county subdivisions are referred to as minor civil divisions (MCDs.) MCDs are the primary divisions of a county. They comprise both governmentally functioning entities that is, those with elected officials who provide services and raise revenues and nonfunctioning entities that exist primarily for administrative purposes, such as election districts. Twenty-eight states and Puerto Rico have MCDs. However, the MCDs function as general purpose governmental units in all or part of only twenty states. Within these twenty states, PEP produces estimates for all governmentally functioning MCDs and for nonfunctioning MCDs in counties that contain at least one functioning MCD. The legal powers and functions of MCDs vary from state to state. Most of the MCDs in twelve states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin) serve as general-purpose local governments. In the remaining eight states for which PEP produces MCD level estimates (Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, and South Dakota) the MCDs, for the most part, perform less of a governmental role and are less well known locally, even though they are active governmental units.

Population Estimates: Concepts and Geography
What is a population estimate? The Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program (PEP) produces July 1 estimates for years after the last published decennial census (1990), as well as for past decades. Existing data series such as births, deaths, Federal tax returns, medicare enrollment, and immigration, are used to update the decennial census base counts. PEP estimates are used in Federal funding allocations, in setting the levels of national surveys, and in monitoring recent demographic changes. A methodology reference accompanies most of our population estimates offerings. How are estimates different from projections? There is not a distinct dichotomy between population estimates and population projections, but there are some differences in time reference and derivation. Estimates usually are for the past, while projections typically are for future dates. Estimates generally use existing symptomatic data, for example, (births, deaths, migration), collected from various sources. Projections must assume future trends for fertility, mortality, and other demographic processes. At the Census Bureau, the population projections use the latest available estimates as starting points. In our current product offerings the user may see both an estimate and a projection available for the same reference date, which may not agree because they were produced at different times. In such cases, estimates are the preferred data.

Vermont – A State Unit Study This mini unit on VERMONT uses the cross curricular approach to education. There are several activities from different academic subjects for you to choose from. One of the most important things is to have fun! Below are some activities to help you study VERMONT. You may choose to do all, some, or none of the activities. You can also alter the activities to better suit your individual child’s needs. Some of these activities overlap each other, choose the one you think that you and the children will enjoy most. The main point of this unit is to make learning about VERMONT and enjoyable for all who are participating. Vermont’s State Flag Placed on a white field is a circle of thirteen gold stars representing the first thirteen states. The stars surround a gold ship's anchor. The states motto " Hope" is on a blue ribbon below the anchor. Create a State “Infodesk”: Before you begin this unit you may want to set up a research area. Place a desk or table in front of a bulletin board area. This will be where you can place relevant books, magazines, photographs, posters, newspaper articles, maps, scrapbooks, games, puzzles, computer software, task cards, travel brochures, etc. that you collect. Print a blank map of the state, or draw one on tag board, that you can place on the bulletin board. As you study the political and physical features of the state, have the children fill in the name of the state capital, large cities, and major geographical features. Color the map using different shades for varying elevations.

Background Garreau, Joel (1948-) Joel Garreau, a journalist for the Washington Post , is the author of two popular books: Edge City: Life on the New Frontier (1991) and The Nine Nations of North America (1981). These books, based on observations Garreau made while traveling throughout North America as a journalist, analyze the social and political forces Garreau believes are transforming the geography of contemporary American communities. His ideas have found a ready audience in both academic and nonacademic settings. Both books are fixtures in college classes in anthropology, geography, demography, and urban planning. In addition to writing for the Washington Post , Garreau is senior fellow at the School of Public Policy at George Mason University. Innovation In his first book, The Nine Nations of North America

Missouri town finds it's a new center of attention
    by Donna McGuire
Knight Ridder Newspapers KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Informed that he lived just down the road from the newly crowned center of U.S. population, former Missouri state Rep. Jerry McBride gasped. "Oh, my goodness," said McBride, who served 26 years in the state Legislature before retiring this year. "That's sort of neat. When you live in a town of 200, you're not making the news every day." Edgar Springs, Mo., made news yesterday, thanks to Census 2000 data. The population center is where the United States would balance if the country were spread on a flat surface and all 281.4 million residents weighed the same. Edgar Springs claimed the title from Steelville, about 40 miles to the northeast in Crawford County. With each census the center point has been shifting west, having entered Missouri at De Soto in 1980.

Why Place Still Matters in the Digital World By Doug Henton
    H
ere is a book that should be required reading by every regional steward in America. Joel Kotkin, a senior fellow at Pepperdine University who writes a monthly column on "Grassroots Business" for the New York Time s, make the strong case for why place still matters in the digital world. His paradoxical message is: " The more technology frees us from the tyranny of place and past affiliation, the greater the need for individual places to make themselves more attractive." Kotkin colorfully illustrates his point with a rich range of interesting examples from communities across America. What matters today is talent, quality of life and an entrepreneurial environment, not low costs and access to raw materials. Kotkin’s law: Wherever knowledge workers cluster, in small towns or big cities that is where wealth will accumulate. Knowledge workers want good places to live. So places better get busy trying to create livable communities attractive to knowledge workers. Kotkin points out two trends that reinforce this urban renaissance. Immigration has transformed the landscape of most America cities. According to Kotkin, this has been a good thing- adding to the talent pool, creating urban vitality and promoting cross-cultural trade. A second trend has been the rise of creative services and the emerging cultural industrial complex in cities. He makes the case that "The cultural intensive nature of knowledge value production draws on a different, often younger, demographic base that is more attracted to a distinctly urban environment."
