School Staffing Survey 2000 LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD LIBRARIANS By Nancy Everhart 9/1/2000
Features > According to the latest research, the shortage of school librarians is becoming a national crisis Many school librarians who entered the field in the 1960s are almost ready to retire. And their junior colleagues in public schools in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and, most recently, Massachusetts, may join them sooner rather than later, thanks to early retirement legislation. This turnover would be no problem if most states required districts to hire only certified staff and if library schools were flush with trained and ready recruits. www.usnews.com/usnews/issue/000612/lib.htm

As school choice options have made their way to the individual state as the various "laboratories of democracy," many on-line resources have been established to track legislation across the nation in individual states. Advocacy organizations have also established school choice web sites in individual states where legislation has been proposed. Lastly, there exist a number of general resource sites located at web site portals, search engines, and news media devoted to the topic of education. If you and your students are adventurous, you can make a soilless medium yourselves: Soilless Recipe Mix in equal parts:
    • Canadian peat moss perlite vermiculite
Although good for starting seeds, these soilless mixes are low on nutrients and tend to dry out quickly. For larger plants, you should find a heavier commercial potting soil that contains some sterilized soil or organic material.

I chose SIT for its reputation in experiential learning, its commitment to intercultural and linguistic competence, its distinguished faculty, and the opportunity to specialize in international education and training. A year in Vermont was a definite bonus, too! I could not have had more ideal training for my current position than what I got at SIT. Not surprisingly, my SIT experience has opened quite a few doors for me along the way. III. Causes of Youth Violence
Introduction School violence finds its roots in the complex and related problems of an individual child, a family, a community, a school, and a national culture. Understanding the potential effect of the various factors demystifies the causes of youth violence and makes it a more manageable problem. Communities that understand the causes of youth violence will be better equipped to develop local solutions to it. This section reviews the following factors: Characteristics of the Individual Child Child abuse and neglect can cause long lasting damage which schools and communities will have to confront. For purposes of this document, neglect encompasses a broad range of omissions. It ranges from the traditional vision of neglect that would shock each of us, to less obvious forms. It may be failing to protect a child from an abusive family member; it may be allowing a child to witness violence against another family member; it may be a lack of nurturing; or it may be concessions made so that a child spends hours in front of the television. Neglect varies in degree, and it can affect some children more profoundly than others. Child development research provides a foundation for understanding youth violence. Not all children who are subjected to a troubled home life, an inadequate community, and/or media violence resort to violence. But some children do.
