Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program
Welcome . . .
From 2000-2004, the Vermont IPM Program will focus on the IPM priorities and needs that were identified through participatory assessment methods that were conducted in the state and region. The following is an overview of Vermont's IPM programs in Apple Field Corn Greenhouse Ornamentals , and School IPM . Please note the multi-disciplinary aspects of the programs and that they are closely integrated with research. In addition, the programs involve diverse participants (i.e., commercial producers, state agency representatives, ag-industry personnel, researchers, private consultants, etc.) and include regional collaborative efforts. Methods of information delivery include: one-to-one communication, field validation trials, workshops, training sessions and presentations, dissemination of educational materials through newsletters and websites, etc.
What is IPM ?
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a sustainable approach to managing pests by combining biological, cultural, physical, and chemical tools in a way that minimizes economic, health, and environmental risks. (National Coalition on IPM)
Program Overview
VERMONT APPLE IPM PROGRAM : Apple orchards are complex ecosystems that require intensive management to produce high quality fruit. Tree growth and fruit production are intricately affected annually by the diverse biotic and abiotic factors within the environment which include numerous insects, mites, plant pathogens, weeds, and vertebrates. Effective pest management is critical in profitable and sustainable apple production.

Fighting for Better Indoor Air Quality in Schools
Is the air in your school building healthful to breathe or is it making people sick? If your school suffers from "sick" air, you can take action. Ah, fresh air! Maybe the air in your community is delicious to breathe. But what about the air inside your school buildings? Is it healthful to breathe or is it making people sick? Barbara "Sam" Gutman is among the educators fighting for better air quality in schools. Gutman, an art teacher at Colchester Middle School in Vermont, has fibromyalga, a muscular disease. The illness makes Gutman ultra-sensitive to any chemicals in the air. Gutman, who was featured in the November 1997 NEA Today , wrote her master's thesis on sick building syndrome and its effect on Vermont schools. Now she is Vermont-NEA's volunteer representative to a statewide Indoor Air Quality Committee. The organization also includes members from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), state agencies, school boards, the state employee union, and the Vermont Children's Forum. Vermont isn't the only place with air problems in its schools. According to the U.S. General Accounting Office, 46 percent of U.S. schools have difficulties with indoor air quality or ventilation systems. That means millions of school employees and students may have health problems or distress because of poor indoor air.

It may well have been at Allen's suggestion that the town was named for General Richard Montgomery (1738-75), who jointly with Benedict Arnold had commanded the Quebec expedition in the late fall and winter of 1775. Allen was one of the two officers who led an attack on Cape Diamond above Quebec at Montgomery's orders on the last day of the year, just before Montgomery was killed while leading the main attack on the city. Richard Montgomery was born at Swords, County Dublin, Ireland. Educated at St. Andrews and Trinity College (Dublin), he became a professional soldier, serving in the French and Indian wars with the British regular forces. In 1772 he sold his commission, retired from the army, and settled in Dutchess County, New York. He married the daughter of Robert R. Livingston Sr., who was the first chairman of the New York Committee of Correspondence and the author of the address the Stamp Act Congress presented to the king.

    MERCURY IN SCHOOLS
Schools do not constitute one of the largest sources of mercury to the environment. However, they are places where mercury and children may come together, and where appropriate health and environmental protection behaviors should be modeled. Schools can also be catalysts for reducing mercury in homes of their students (and staff). Most high schools and middle schools have had one or more mercury spills

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled last week on a church/state case that could have implications for voucher cases, but particularly for Vermont if other cases prompt the court to expand on the ruling's reasoning. The case involved a Christian club, called the "Good News Club," and the Milford public school in New York state. The club wanted to meet in the school after school hours, taking advantage of a school policy that allowed club meetings on school premises. The school, however, did not want the Good News Club to be able to meet on the premises because they feared it was a violation of the Establishment Clause of the Constitution and would send a message that the public school was endorsing religion.

Fletcher Allen/UVM Clinical Trial Explores New Treatment Options for Coronary Artery Disease
Two new national clinical trials are making drug-coated stents - experimental treatment alternatives for patients at risk for restenosis or re-narrowing of an artery - available to coronary artery disease patients in the Vermont region. The University Invasive Cardiology Group - interventional cardiologists at the University of Vermont and Fletcher Allen Health Care - is coordinating the study locally. A stent - a tiny piece of stainless steel shaped like a coil or spring - is often placed in order to open up a blocked artery in the heart. However, 25 percent of patients - particularly diabetics - experience repeat blockages within nine months of having a stent placed. The UVM/Fletcher Allen site is the first site in New England to launch a new chemotherapy drug-coated stent trial. To inquire about these clinical trials, call (802) 847-4746. Study Examines New Treatment for Early Parkinson's The University of Vermont College of Medicine is participating in a nationwide clinical study looking at the effectiveness of a new treatment for patients diagnosed with early Parkinson's disease. Currently available treatments, though effective, have produced complications after three to seven years of use. Researchers are hopeful that the long-acting quality of this experimental treatment will help patients do better on a long-term basis. Professor and Chair of Neurology Robert Hamill, M.D., is the lead investigator of the study at UVM.
