International Employment for Teachers
Teaching Jobs Overseas Topics: international teaching, teaching overseas, teaching abroad, American and international schools, overseas jobs, international employment, etc.
Alternative Certification Many states have developed or are initiating programs that provide alternative routes to teacher certification, particularly for mid-career professionals. The goal of such programs is to draw a diversity of individuals with in-depth subject matter backgrounds into teaching careers. Requirements for an alternative teaching license vary by state. For an overseas position, it does not matter what state your license is from. Generally, applicants must hold a bachelors degree in the subject to be taught, achieve a passing score on state-required examinations, complete an intensive teacher preparation program, and possibly fulfill a supervised teaching internship. Specific information on which school systems are offering internships can be requested from the schools. After satisfactory completion of these requirements, the applicant will be issued a teaching credential.

THIS WEEK'S ARTICLE Learning for Life There are many reasons adults decide to go back to school. One of the most important is for personal growth. But probably the most common reasons are job-related. It's easy to understand why career issues take precedence. Having to juggle daily financial, family and job pressures makes us eminently practical. No doubt this is why business programs are so popular with adults (according to the NCES, nearly 1/3 of all adults with bachelor's degrees majored in business). Or why paralegal, accounting, and computer technology programs are widely available. But we also tend to be somewhat impatient and single-minded in the pursuit of job skills, sometimes at the expense of our general education.

The Vermont NEA on Teacher's Salaries This is the first in a planned series of brief reviews of articles on the Vermont NEA Web Site . This time, the focus is on an article entitled " Teacher Salaries Must Be Upgraded. " The article states that the Vermont-NEA is reexamining teachers' salaries and planning the more aggressive use of collective bargaining to negotiate higher salaries. The union is seeking a starting salary of $35,000 and at least $56,000 for any teacher with a master's degree or a bachelor's degree plus 30 credits, and $70,000 at 15 years with a master's degree plus 30. Just last weekend the VT NEA held a summit to move this plan forward using coordinated barganing. (11/18/99) Last Saturday, teachers' union leaders and negotiators met in Montpelier to discuss the best ways to increase teachers' salaries in Vermont ( read the union report here ). Perhaps hinting at an official political strategy using Act 60 as leverage, union president Angelo Dorta stated that "teacher compensation is an issue of educational quality." The meeting was billed as a summit on "coordinated bargaining," a strategy of formalized cooperation among local unions on a regional basis to give the individual locals more leverage. President Dorta stated, "There is only one negotiations strategy in our experience that has a proven track record of improving teacher salaries region-by-region… It is coordinated bargaining on a regional basis… implemented most effectively by Association Regional Bargaining Councils"

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Vermont's Classrooms Gain 19 National Board Certified Teachers® in 2002 (Montpelier , VT) — On Wednesday, January 8, the Vermont World Class Teaching Project announced that 19 teachers in Vermont earned their profession's top honor this year by achieving National Board Certification®. With the new certificates, the state now has 53 National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs), and ranks 13th in the nation in per capita number of NBCTs (tied with California). Nationwide, 7,886 teachers from all 50 states and the District of Columbia earned National Board Certification this year. This achievement brings the total number of National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) to 23,930. These outstanding teachers are certified through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). "National Board Certification is beginning to have an impact on the quality of education in Vermont,” says Laurie Lawrence, director of the Vermont Project, “especially in schools that have clusters of National Board Certified Teachers. We hope that school administrators will continue to see the advantages to their schools of encouraging teachers to apply, in supporting them through the process, and in creating leadership roles within their schools that will utilize their knowledge, skills, and expertise.” The Vermont World Class Teaching Project is sponsored by the Vermont Teacher Quality Enhancement Program (TQE), a partner in The Vermont Institutes.

Kreidler, Carol J. English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers must have special preparation to teach English to non-native speakers; being a fluent speaker or an effective teacher of English to native speakers is not enough. Just as teaching mathematics or French requires special knowledge and skills, teaching English as a Second Language does also. This Digest outlines some of the relevant issues concerning ESL teacher certification: profiles of students needing ESL instruction, reasons for considering certification, academic preparation needed to teach ESL, and a description of state requirements for certification. WHO NEEDS AN ESL TEACHER? Estimates based on the 1980 Census indicate that in 1980-81 at least three-and-a-half million school-age children in the United States lacked the English language skills needed to succeed in school. These children, whose native language is not English, generally fall into two groups. The first, limited-English-proficient (LEP) students, speak, understand, and may read and write English, but not well enough to keep up academically with their native English-speaking peers. The second group, non-English-speaking (NES) students, do not speak or understand English and may have no literacy skills in their native language. This factor complicates attempts to teach them English.
