Custom Magazines April 12, 2003 VHDL Int'l plans leap into system design By Richard Goering EE Times June 7, 1999 (10:20 a.m. EST) "In the last 10 years, RTL [register-transfer level] to gates has been the dominant methodology," said Steve Schulz, president of VHDL International. "But now I think we're seeing it has run out of steam. The significance of this road map is to enable the next plateau of productivity for system-design projects." Even though the new road map takes VHDL International far beyond its original goal of promoting VHDL, that language will still be at the "center" of the organization's efforts, said Schulz. VHDL International is continuing to work with such efforts as the VHDL Programming Language Interface (PLI), RTL synthesis subset, VHDL-AMS mixed-signal standard, Vital ASIC library standard and ongoing improvements to VHDL itself. A cornerstone of the new road map is the SLDL initiative, launched by the EDA Industry Council and recently made part of VHDL International as a committee headed by David Barton. This week's road map makes it clear that VHDL International intends to develop tight links between SLDL and programming languages such as C, C++ and Java, as well as both Verilog and VHDL. Those links should be thought of as a semantic framework rather than a specific syntax, Schulz said. "We want to communicate some kind of information that the receiving side can take without loss," he said. "For example, today there is no standard way to represent timing in C or Java. We intend to rectify that."

    46. Computer Systems Architecture & Linux Lab
Installing Linux on your PC. vhdl programming is also taught here. Intheir final year all computing students select a personal project.
    http://www.uwe.ac.uk/cems/intro/compsysarc_linux.shtml
The facilities in these labs support students' work in Computer Systems, PLD configuration, Networking and Linux Administration. Some of the more technical programming work is in the areas of input/output, data communications, PLD configuration, real-time systems and low level code. The new area of PLD configuration involves the customisation of large logic arrays (Programmable Logic Devices) using the VHDL hardware specification language. This technique uses HLL programs written in VHDL, which initially look somewhat like Pascal, which are then translated down into a "netlist" file which can be downloaded into the PLD chip to configure the hardware for your exact requirements. The networked PC workstations support C, Java and assembler-level programming in the first year using the Microsoft Visual Studio. These PCs also offer dual-boot facilities, so that you can choose to run Windows NT or Linux. The older PCs are used to demonstrate and practice the installation and maintenance of the Linux operating system. Linux is very popular with students and provides an excellent learning experience. Starting with the first year, all of the Computing students come here to study Computer Systems, which includes some low level assembler programming in graphics, and fundamentals of network communications. The aim is to understand more clearly the interdependence of hardware and software, especially by analysing how current commercial developments benefit from related improvements in performance and convenience.

    Textbook
The textbook will be Advanced Computer Architectures (Sima, Fountain, Kacsuk). Other references are Computer Architecture, Pipelined and Parallel Processor Design (Flynn) and Computer Architecture, A Quantitative Approach (Hennessey and Patterson). The order of Chapter coverage in the textbook will be:
  • Chapter 4 - Introduction to Instruction Level Parallelism
  • Chapter 5 - Pipelined Processors (this should be review). Will have a VHDL modeling assignment with this chapter.
  • Chapter 6 - VLIW Architectures
  • Chapter 7 - SuperScalar Processors (will have a VHDL modeling assignment with this chapter)

vhdl programming on Splash 2, by JM Arnold and DA Buell, describes the use ofVHDL as a programming language for Splash 2 and includes a simple example.
    http://www.ccic.gov/pubs/blue97/nsa/splash.html
    The Splash Reconfigurable Processors
In recent years the emergence of reconfigurable Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) has given rise to a new form of computing in which the architecture of a computer may evolve over time, changing to fit the needs of each application it executes. With such a computer, the programmer may tailor the architecture to fit the problem solution, rather than vice versa. Splash 1 is a reconfigurable systolic engine based upon the Xilinx XC3090 FPGA. Splash 1 was developed by the IDA Supercomputing Research Center in 1988 and was the predecessor of the current Splash 2 system. Splash 2 is an attached special purpose parallel processor in which the computing engines are Xilinx XC4010 FPGAs. The architecture of Splash 2 is designed to accelerate the solution of problems which exhibit at least modest amounts of temporal parallelism (pipelining) or data parallelism (single instruction multiple data stream).
