Scottish Literature: Twentieth Century Perspectives class code = ES204 Eleanor Bell and Elspeth Findlay Lecture Mon 2-3, Seminar Fri 2-3 From the beginning of the twentieth century in Scottish literary studies there was a clear rejection of many of the values of the Victorian era. In this class we will examine what has often been referred to as the Scottish literary renaissance (from the 1920s to the 1940s), considering in what ways this challenged notions of Scottishness and helped to create a revival of Scottish literature and culture. We will then go on to trace developments throughout the twentieth century, reflecting on a variety of different genres (novels, poetry, drama, TV and film). In particular, with respect to the contemporary period (and especially leading up to devolution), we will reflect on what many critics have described as a new found confidence in Scottish literature and culture, questioning the extent to which this is the case. Rationale for the Class Learning Outcomes including key skills to be developed Students will develop a knowledge of the range of Scottish literature throughout the twentieth century and gain a clear sense of some of the problematic issues surrounding national identity.
