Sex In The Victorian Era.
Interviewer: Philip Satchell Friday, 1 February 2002 Sex, Victorians and Historians what's it all about? A tapestry of tantalising themes were discussed recently at a conference called The Erotic Empire: Sexuality, Gender and Power in Britain and Beyond. The conference was held at Adelaide Universtiy and organised by the Australasian Victorian Studies Association. Dr Lesley Hall from London's Wellcome Library for the History and Understanding of Medicine was a key note speaker at the conference and just after her lecture she joined Philip Satchell. "Make no mistakethis is not a book about a single subject. It is rather about a life of enormous breadth and substance, one engaging science, conservation, philanthropy, education, and women's rights. Annie Montague Alexander was extraordinary, and Barbara Stein has done her subject proud."Alfred Runte, author of Yosemite: The Embattled Wilderness "Based on Annie Montague Alexander's correspondence and diaries, Barbara Stein has created a vivid and at times intimate portrait of a woman scientist at the turn of the twentieth century. This is an epic story that resonates with our contemporary desire to illuminate women's lives, and with our efforts to understand and preserve the natural world of California and the West."Ruth Sime, author of Lise Meitner: A Life in Physics "A thorough and insightful account of a remarkable individual who, as an important patron and an amateur contributor, influenced the course of early twentieth-century science. Alexander's life is also important simply as a human story of how an itelligent, active, and strong-minded woman coped with the problems of identity and work in the post-Victorian era. It's a great story of a complex and admirable woman, and a significant contribution to California history and the history of field science."Robert E. Kohler, University of Pennsylvania

Scottish Literature: Twentieth Century Perspectives
class code = ES204
Eleanor Bell and Elspeth Findlay
Lecture Mon 2-3, Seminar Fri 2-3
From the beginning of the twentieth century in Scottish literary studies there was a clear rejection of many of the values of the Victorian era. In this class we will examine what has often been referred to as the Scottish literary renaissance (from the 1920s to the 1940s), considering in what ways this challenged notions of Scottishness and helped to create a revival of Scottish literature and culture. We will then go on to trace developments throughout the twentieth century, reflecting on a variety of different genres (novels, poetry, drama, TV and film). In particular, with respect to the contemporary period (and especially leading up to devolution), we will reflect on what many critics have described as a new found confidence in Scottish literature and culture, questioning the extent to which this is the case.
Rationale for the Class
Learning Outcomes including key skills to be developed
Students will develop a knowledge of the range of Scottish literature throughout the twentieth century and gain a clear sense of some of the problematic issues surrounding national identity. In examining major changes at the beginning of the twentieth century in Scottish literary studies, students will be encouraged to interrogate their own conceptions of national identity and sense of belonging. Through close examination of novels, poetry, drama and film in workshops, students will have the opportunity to develop their critical and discursive skills.
