The Pre-Dreadnought Era saw significant changes in how coastal defenses were provisioned. Formerly, coastal defense installations had the upper hand against wooden hulled warships attacking land-based targets. Masonry forts armed with heavier guns than the pre-1860 warships could mount provided effective protection against attack from the sea. The advent of armored warships changed the balance of power between coast defenses and their naval attackers. Efficient steam engines allowed warships to position themselves more effectively against land-based targets. In addition, new ship-borne ordnance could quickly pulverize masonry forts designed before the 1860s. Coast defense theorists reacted with innovation and nation states with significant coastal installations to protect spent millions to improve their defenses. Mine fields, land-based torpedoes, dispersed cement casemates, disappearing gun platforms, and gigantic ordnance all were used to improve land-based defenses. This web page provides links to information on the many remaining coastal defense installations around the world which survive from the Pre-Dreadnought period. Due to their immense construction, many more coastal defense works have survived than have the warships which they were designed to defend against. Of interest to the historian, architect and the artillery enthusiast, these defense works are "the other half of the equation" in the amazing expansion of technology during the Pre-Dreadnought Era of naval history.

Haus der Kunst

Munich, , DE Germany
Every naturalistic representation of the naked body was considered during the Victorian era (1837–1901) as morally dangerous. The common view was that nude painting, if practised at all, was of low quality only. Kenneth Clark, for example, in his influential 1956 study on the nude in art, did not find it necessary to devote more than a few sentences to the nude in the Victorian age, finally dismissing it with contempt: the only form of nude painting that survived the great frost of Victorian prudery in Great Britain, according to Clark, was a kind of guileless academism. The exhibition Exposed: The Victorian Nude now presents another, new aspect of this age. It takes as its theme the development of both female and male nude painting in England. But was the nude an expression and zenith of high art, or was it an outrageous attack on public moralsNULL In this new situation, the prudish English nude, now felt not to be sensuous, lost its provincial character. The new-style nude spread rapidly – from the paintings in the Royal Academy to mass-produced photographs and magazines – and was received by an interested public. The nude became socially acceptable and invaded the realms of high art.

Men in Wonderland:
The Lost Girlhood of the Victorian Gentleman
Catherine Robson
Shopping Cart Reviews Table of Contents
Introduction [HTML] or [PDF format] Fascination with little girls pervaded Victorian culture. For many, girls represented the true essence of childhood or bygone times of innocence; but for middle-class men, especially writers, the interest ran much deeper. In Men in Wonderland , Catherine Robson explores the ways in which various nineteenth-century British male authors constructed girlhood, and analyzes the nature of their investment in the figure of the girl. In so doing, she reveals the link between the idealization of little girls and a widespread fantasy of male developmenta myth suggesting that men become masculine only after an initial feminine stage, lived out in the protective environment of the nursery. Little girls, argues Robson, thus offer an adult male the best opportunity to reconnect with his own lost self. Tracing the beginnings of this myth in the writings of Romantics Wordsworth and De Quincey, Robson identifies the consolidation of this paradigm in numerous Victorian artifacts, ranging from literary works by Dickens and Barrett Browning, to paintings by Frith and Millais, to reports of the Royal Commission on Children's Employment. She analyzes Ruskin and Carroll's "high noon" of girl worship and investigates the destruction of the fantasy in the closing decades of the century, when social concerns about the working girl sexualized the image of young females.

Charlotte Mew Biography Excerpt: Charlotte Mary Mew, esteemed by Siegfried Sassoon, and Ezra Pound was born in London on November 15, 1869. She took her own life on March 24, 1928. Haunted by unrequited passion and tormented by fears of madness she, nevertheless, produced poems of unique beauty and passion. Although her life was lived for the most part in poverty and despair she was still recognized by Vita Sackville West as a poetess of distinction. Virginia Wolff called her the greatest living poetess, and Marianne Moore, a quarter of a century after her death, considered her work 'above praise.' Thomas Hardy accorded her extraordinary praise, and others believed she approached poetic genius...
