Haggling Together the countries of Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Burma make up one of the most ethnically diverse regions of Southeast Asia. Outside of the cities, little English is spoken in any of these countries except by tour guides and others who have frequent contact with Western visitors. Much of the architecture and art in Cambodia, Laos, and Burma is influenced by Buddhism and includes some of the world's most renowned temples along with exquisitely sculpted Buddha images. The temple complexes of Angkor Wat in Cambodia and Bagan in Burma are among the architectural wonders of the ancient world, while the finest temples in Laos are found in the ancient capital of Luang Prabang. One important point to note: the ethnic minorities, or hill tribes, of northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar (Burma) all share a common heritage with each other, originating either from Himalayan tribes or southern Chinese clans. You'll find startling similarities in the customs and languages of all these people.

Modernity in Asia Book Project
Introduction:
The Task: Students will form small groups in class and the task for each group is to publish a high quality "book" (an anthology) that illuminates the notion of modernity in light of Asian experience and perspectives. The core of this anthology is an essay that each group member contributes. In addition to the essay, every student should coordinate with his/her group members to share editorial work, such as copy editing, content editing, designing and etc. After the group completes its project, the group also needs to promote the book to their peers. Finally, each individual needs to employ the assessment criteria to evaluate the their peer’s projects by writing two two-pages book reviews. The result of each of your evaluation will determine which group receives the "Best Book Award."
The Process: Form A Group and An Action Plan After students form the group, the first editorial meeting should be called at the earliest possible time. In this meeting the group member should elect a chief editor. The chief editor (group leader) will be responsible to coordinate the publication tasks and report the progress to the instructor. Each student in the group should coordinate with the chief editor and the group members to determine which topic s/he wants to work on. Find a topic that is appealing to you and stick to it. Changing topic in the middle of publication process may seriously disrupt the schedule. There shall be no identical essay subject in each anthology. Submit an action plan that includes the following information.

ANCIENT HISTORY
I n northern Vietnam, archeologists have unearthed earthenware pottery made by people of the Phung Nguyen culture, a civilization that flourished in the late third millennium B.C. The use of bronze developed over the next two millennia, as society became more hierarchical and divided into small village groups. I f you have spent any time in Vietnam, you have probably seen the image of a Dong Son drum. Represented in everything from contemporary artwork to company logos, these massive bronze drums were the products of the Dong Son civilization, which existed in what is now Vietnam’s Red River delta from the seventh to the first centuries A.D. Their typanums decorated with concentric circles and symbols of the sun, birds, frogs, people pounding rice, warriors, and boats, these massive drums not only give us insight into the way of life during this distant era, but also attest to their creators’ incredible skill. T he drums were probably cast using a lost wax process. The artisans carved designs into wax, and then covered the wax with clay. Molten bronze was then poured into this mould, replacing the wax. “They are very fine bronze- wares,” explains culturalist Bui Van Vuong, “To this day, we can’t do it better.”

FEATURED STORY FROM ELEPHANTGUIDE.COM VIETNAM'S "WORLD HERITAGE ROAD" Tourism officials from the three Central Vietnam provinces of Thua Thien Hue, Danang City and Quang Nam as well as travel industry professionals and the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism have joined forces to form the World Heritage Road - a new initiative to develop and promote tourism to Central Vietnam. The World Heritage Road will stretch from Vinh to Hue to Danang to Hoi An/ My Son to Nha Trang to Dalat, around 1,500km of the highway 1 along the coast of Central Vietnam. It is so-called because the route encompasses no less than three UNESCO-designated World Heritage Sites; the sixteenth century silk route trading port of Hoi An; My Son Valley, the sacred remains of the ancient Cham civilization, and the ancient imperial city of Hue and perhaps a fourth one the Quang Binh province. It's a marvelous project which will bring together the various provinces and attractions of Central Vietnam and provide countless business opportunities for the people of Vietnam.

Only slightly smaller than the U.S. in size, China rests in Eastern Asia and borders North Korea and Vietnam. In ancient times, easy terrain, mild weather and abundant water made the Sichuan basin rich in vegetation and game, and hospitable to human settlement. Mountains or high plateaux isolated the province from the outside world, while a large network of rivers did allow for communication and trade with other parts of China.
