Country Info Vietnam Introduction Vietnam General Data Vietnam Maps Vietnam Culture ... Vietnam Time and Date Vietnam Culture Back to Top Chinese influence permeated all aspects of traditional Vietnamese culture, while Western influences have been strong in the 20th century. Vietnam's Confucian heritage is seen in the importance of family to the Vietnamese. Families are essentially patrilineal, but Vietnamese women work alongside men in many jobs and play a major role in raising children and managing family finances. When possible, the Vietnamese prefer to work from early morning until early evening, with an extended rest period in the heat of midday. In rural areas, both men and women wear trousers and shirts or blouses. On formal occasions and in urban areas, Western-style clothing is common, including skirts and blouses for women. Women still sometimes wear a form of the traditional ao dai, a long, slit tunic worn over pants. Traditional Vietnamese culture reflected the influence of neighboring China. Vietnamese art, architecture, music, and literature all followed Chinese forms. With the advent of French colonialism in the late 19th century, however, the influence of Western culture replaced that of China. Modern Vietnamese cultural expression combines the socialist realism of Communist systems with current trends in the capitalist world. Rice is the staple food. Vietnamese cuisine incorporates elements of both Chinese cooking and the cuisines of other Southeast Asian countries. Noodle soup with chicken or beef broth (pho), a distinctive kind of spring roll (cha gio), and the use of fermented fish sauce (nuoc mam) for dipping and seasoning are among the many noteworthy dishes.

ROWEN AN E-MAIL Hi, my name is Rowen Sandel and for the past three years I have been teaching third grade at Highland Elementary School in Oakland, California where I'm better known as Mr.Rowen. On September 1st I began a ten month trip that will bring me to ten countries as I literally go around the world. I plan to visit Norway, Italy, Nepal China Vietnam , Cambodia, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, and Tonga before returning to the U.S. in early June of 2001. Over the last three years I have had many wonderful students, some of whose families are from Cambodia, Tonga, Vietnam, and Laos and one of the inspirations for this trip came from my desire to visit these countries. I also wanted to visit other places and visit other friends around the world. This website is an opportunity for the children of Highland to see images and learn stories and information about where they or their classmates come from. But it is not just for my past students, students of Highland, or people whose families are from a country I'm visiting. This site is for anyone, child or adult, who wishes to see new things, think about new ideas, and learn about things they could have only imagined before. It is for anyone who is a life-long-learner and wishes to experience the larger world we live in.

03:30 PM Jul. 08, 1998 PT The co-producer of a story alleging that US troops used nerve gas on Vietnam-era defectors says CNN executives caved under pressure from government and military officials when they retracted the Operation Tailwind story. Former CNN executive producer Jack Smith who together with CNN's April Oliver researched and wrote the story took to the stage of the Freedom Forum's Newseum in Arlington, Virginia, today in the latest in a series of appearances to defend his work.

The 40-minute forum was broadcast live on the Internet via RealAudio at the Freedom Forum's site Smith, who also appeared Monday on CNN's "Crossfire," repeated his assertions that CNN executives "showed no courage, they showed no guts in the face of the pressure that rained in on this story" from military and government officials. "When [it] came time to go on the air, we had our sources that confirmed, corroborated, supported the story," said Smith. "We had sufficient sources to put that story on the air."

03:00 AM Jan. 12, 1999 PT Anyone remember a CNN correspondent named Wolf Blitzer reporting from the Pentagon in January 1991 that military officials were claiming credit for wiping out almost all of the 700-plane Iraqi air force? Robert Wiener, a CNN producer involved in covering Desert Storm, reminds us about the report in his book Live from Baghdad: "Wolf said all of Iraq's fixed Scud and ballistic missile sites were put out of commission and Baghdad's nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons arsenal had been 'wiped out.'" Blitzer also pointed out that the Republican Guard had been "decimated." A little while later eight years or so reporters shoveled out the straight dope from military briefings describing new strikes against Iraq. American and British officials boasted of destroying nine Iraqi missile factories, putting them out of commission according to US General Henry Shelton for "at least a year." And hitting barracks, ministry offices, armed-forces command sites, air defense systems, and just all kinds of other big stuff.
