Saigon on Wheels
An Introduction by
Ed Kashi I n the spring of 1994 I went to Vietnam for the first time. As a youth growing up in America in the 1970's, Vietnam was a place I only knew as a tragic war. With talk in the press of increasing ties between the two former enemies, and the possibility of a lifting of the U.S. trade embargo, my instincts told me that the time was ripe for a visit. I also wanted to visit Vietnam quickly, before the onslaught of U.S. journalists that would be sure to follow any warming of relations between the two nations. I wanted to do a story about the emerging youth culture in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) as a reflection of the first post-war generation's mood and habits. Arriving in that bustling, free-spirited city, I soon realized that my initial idea wasn't panning out. The Vietnamese youth culture is very tame compared to other places like Berlin, Belfast and the U.S. where I had worked. After a brief panic (I was there at my own expense) I realized my ultimate story had been passing right in front of my eyes: the motorbike culture of Saigon. It was a moment of visual inspiration, and I immediately changed gears to produce a photo essay that would show some of the unique qualities and some of the current mood of a country we know so little about. T his was a completely new experience for me. It was as though a new set of eyes had been given to me.

The Dong Son culture
received the most brilliant development and has been closely connected with the Red River civilization, the wet rice, which is widely developed from the northern to the central and southern regions, and the appearance of the primeval states (Van Lang - Au Lac in the North, Cham Pa in the central region, Sa Huynh and Phu Nam in the South).
Despite numerous historical changes, there are still approximately 7,300 preserved historic and cultural sites from which 1,500 cultural relics are concentrated mainly in Hanoi anh Hue. For example, the relics of the Hung Kings in Phong Chau (Phu Tho province) dated back to the period of the Co Loa of the Au Lac state, the ancient capital of Hoa Lu, and the My Son vestige of the Cham people in the central region.

Vietnam boasts an age-long and special culture that is closely attached to the history of the formation and development of the nation. Historians have shared a common view that Vietnam has got a fairly large cultural community that was formed around the first half of the first millenium before Christ and flourished in the middle of this millenium. That was Dong Son cultural community. This culture attained a degree of development higher than that of others at that time in the region and had its own characteristics but still bore the features of Southeast Asian culture because of the common South Asian racial root (Southern Mongoloid) and the water rice culture. Different development routes of local cultures in various areas (in the deltas of Hong (Red) river, Ma (Horse) river, Ca river and so on...) joined together to form Dong Son culture. This was also the period of the very "embryonic" state of Vietnam in the form of inter- and super-village community, which come into being and existed in order to resist invaders and to build and maintain dykes for rice cultivation. From this pattern of "embryo" state, primitive tribes grew into nations. The War had a big impact on America (click here for more on how the country reacted). The younger generation was already rebelling against their parents and the war made the rift between them grow wider. Many of these young people protested, some using music and literature as vehicles for their ideas.
Music
Some songs like "Five Hundred Miles", "Leaving on a Jet Plane", "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" and others were like a soundtrack to the Vietnam war to the soldiers in combat. Others, like Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" were written after the war ended as a reflection on what had happened.

Vietnam Exploring Vietnam Asia Homepage The World A lthough many westerners still imagine Vietnam through the lens of war, it is in reality a country filled with captivating natural beauty and tranquil village life. Its highlands and rainforest regions, far from being devastated, continue to yield new species and team with exotic wildlife. Its islands and beaches are among the finest in all of Southeast Asia, and its cuisine is very possibly the most delicious you will ever find. Over two decades have passed since Vietnam was officially united, and in that time it has done a remarkable job of healing its wounds. Today, this gracious and graceful country is an outstanding travel destination. S haped like an elongated S , Vietnam stretches the length of the Indochinese Peninsula and covers a surface area of 128,000 square milesmaking it roughly the size of Italy or, in the U.S., New Mexico. China lies to the north, Laos and Cambodia to the west, and the South China Sea to the east. Topographically, Vietnam is a verdant tapestry of soaring mountains, fertile deltas, primeval forests inhabited by exotic fauna, sinuous rivers, mysterious caves, otherworldly rock formations, and heavenly waterfalls and beaches. Beyond nature, the curious and open-minded visitor will find in Vietnam a feast of culture and history.

Vietnam's Culture
Retaining Ancient Traditions

Vietnamese people practice a variety of religions, reflecting the influence of many cultures. Early Vietnamese culture included three major belief systems: Mahayana Buddhism Confucianism , and Daoism (Taoism). Indian and Chinese monks brought Buddhism to Vietnam early in the 1st millennium AD, and Confucianism and Daoism (Taoism) were both introduced after the Chinese conquest. After the restoration of Vietnamese independence in the 10th century, the royal court initially gave official support to all three belief systems. Eventually, however, the court recognized only Confucianism, which is more a set of social ethics than a religious faith. Buddhism and Daoism continued to be popular among the mass of the population. Today, the majority of Vietnamese are at least nominally Mahayana Buddhists. Of this number, only a minority are serious adherents.
Major Advances in Education
occurred after the division of Vietnam in 1954. The South adopted an education system based on the United States model, which emphasizes the development of an individual's talents and skills. The North introduced mass education and trained people for participation in a Communist society based on the political theories of Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin. After reunification in 1975 the Communist system used in the North was extended throughout the country, although technology training is now as important as teaching Communist ideology.

Culture and History of Vietnam
The Vietnamese are decendents of the nomadic Mongols from China and Migrants from Indonesia. The first rule was Hung Voung. China ruled Vietnam until the 15th century.
France first jumped in picture in 1889. The influence of the French was first pushed in the 19th century. France weakend and went to war and lost and Vietnam became independent again.
In the 1960's a war broke out and the U.S. did not get involved until the late 1960's to the early 1970's. There was also an effort to destroy the Viet Cong forces that failed to do so. By the year1971 most of the ground troops were called out but the war was not yet over until 1974.
After that things were a little rough. But that has all changed and modern day Vietnam is a lot better in the eyes of most people. Main foods that the Vietnamese like to eat are things like seafood and rice. The main form of transportation is by bicycle and or foot because cars can rarely be afforded. That is basically the culture and history of Vietnam. Created by: James Date created: May 3,1999

Vietnam - Culture Vietnam is a fascinating cross-over point between Chinese and South East Asian cultures, it is also influenced heavily by the French and Americans.
There are three main cultural sections of the country - The North is identifiably Vietnamese, the South much more cosmopolitan and the section between Na Trang and Hue is redolent of ancient Cham
art and culture - their towers and sculptures are magnificent and can be seen in many of the museums of the area.
The South is much more economically advanced than the North, and throughout the country there is a vibrant contemporary art scene, particularly in painting.
