Vietnam Geography and Climate Vietnam is the largest and most populous of the 3 Indochinese countries and is located along the East Coast of Indochina and borders on Cambodia and Laos in the west and the People’s Republic of China in the north. It stretches over 1,600 km along the eastern cost of the Indochinese Peninsula. Vietnam is the 2nd largest country in South East Asia after Indonesia. It is divided into 3 regions :-
  • northern Vietnam consisting of provinces bording China and those that lie in the Red River Delta;
  • central Vietnam with provinces lying between the central coast and the 1,600 km-long Truong Son mountain range; and
  • southern Vietnam which includes Ho Chi Minh City, the few provinces east of the city, and the rice-rich provinces of the Mekong River Delta.
The south of Vietnam mainly consists of plains. 2 major rivers, the Mekong River in the south and the Red River (Hong) in the north each form deltas of considerable size before entering the South China Sea. The Red River also runs through Hanoi, the capital city. Although the country is located in the tropics, the climate is tropical only in central and southern Vietnam, with warm and humid weather all year round (22-35

Introduction [Top of Page] Background: France occupied all of Vietnam by 1884. Independence was declared after World War II, but the French continued to rule until 1954 when they were defeated by communist forces under HO Chi Minh, who took control of the north. US economic and military aid to South Vietnam grew through the 1960s in an attempt to bolster the government, but US armed forces were withdrawn following a cease-fire agreement in 1973. Two years later North Vietnamese forces overran the south. Economic reconstruction of the reunited country has proven difficult as aging Communist Party leaders have only grudgingly initiated reforms necessary for a free market. http://www.asianinfo.org/asianinfo/vietnam/pro-geography.htm
Home About Us Search Vietnam's Main Page Vietnam's Geography There are four geographic sections in Vietnam, ranging from rugged mountains to marshy fertile flatlands. Vietnam's "S" shape takes it from China, in the north, the the Gulf of Thailand in the south. In the north, there are mountains that extend up to 3.143 m at Fan Si Pan, the highest point in Vietnam; the east and southeast consists of the Red River Delta, an alluvial plain; south of this Delta is the Truong Son (Annam Highlands) which is considered to be the backbone of Vietnam. A plateau (Central Highlands) also occupies this area and can be found between Cambodia and the South China sea. The Mekong Delta is located in the southernmost portion of Vietnam and makes up a fertile, marshy flatland that goes from the Central Highlands (north of it) south to the mangrove swamps on the Ca Mau peninsula. The Red River and the Mekong River are navigable in their entirety and are considered to be the two major rivers in Vietnam. To help prevent flooding in their deltas, a system of dikes and canals has been erected. This has helped improve farming in the Mekong Delta due to salt water flooding from the South China Sea, especially during the long, wet monsoon season. Vietnam's climate is amazingly varied, but this is due to the vast range of latitudes and altitudes in the country. The average temperature in the north is about 81 degrees F (27 degrees C) and in the south a nice 70 degrees F (21 degrees C) and is generally humid. Two monsoons control the weather, one is considered to be a dry monsoon which occurs mainly in the north from about October/November to March. The other brings wet, warm weather to the entire country, with the exception of the mountainous areas, from April/May to October. July and August are considered to be the hottest and most humid months.

Covering and area of 329,600 square kilometres, Vietnam is some 7.5 % smaller than reunited Germany. But, like only a few other countries of similar size, it extends across two climatic zones - with a moderate climate in the North, comparable to that of Southern Europe, and a tropical climate in the South. Hanoi is, like Hongkong, located at a geographical latitude slightly to the South of Cairo or the Canary Islands, while Saigon is at a geographical latitude only slightly to the North of the Nigerian capital Lagos. Altogether the country stretches for more than 1,650 kilometres from North to South - which is roughly the distance from Hamburg to Athens. The coastline of Vietnam is about 3,000 kilometres long. To the West the country is bordered by Laos and Cambodia, to the North by China and to the East and South by the South China Sea. Geographically there are five different regions: 1. the northern mountain terrain with heights reaching above 3,000 metres; 2. the

    Geography
    Unlike most other countries of a similar size, Vietnam extends across two climatic zones, with a moderate climate in the North, and a tropical climate in the South. The country measures more than 1,650km from North to South with a coastline about 2,000km long, covering an area of 329,560 square kilometres. Laos and Cambodia share its western borders, with China to the North, and the South China Sea to the East and South. There are five distinct geographic regions: the mountainous north with peaks above 3,000 metres; the Red River delta of Hanoi; the Annamite Mountain Range, which divides North and South; the narrow coastal strip between the Annamite Mountain Range and the South China Sea, and the Mekong delta in the South. Climate
    Covering two different climatic zones, Vietnam has a moderate northern zone, with winter from November to April, and summer from May to October, and a tropical southern zone, with the climate much like the rest of Southeast Asia. The south's cool, dry season is from November to January, the hot dry season from February to April or May, and the rainy season from May or June to October. Vietnam is occasionally affected by typhoons during the rainy season.

    Vietnam - Geography Vietnam has the shape of an elongated 'S' and stretches over 1600 km - in some areas it is only 50 km wide.
    The regions cover equatorial lowlands through to high temperate plateaux and chilly mountain peaks.
    Three quarters of Vietnam is mountainous - the North has the highest mountain, Fan Si Pan, 3,143m, in the Hoang Lien Mountains, close to the old French hill station of Sapa.
    The Truong Son Mountains (on the Annamite Cordillera) form the Central Highlands and run almost the whole length of the country. Both North and South are home to large rivers, the Red River and Mekong River respectively.
    Climate
    The North has a climate similar to Southern China, the South is much more like the rest of South East Asia, while central Vietnam is somewhere in between.
