Cambodia Laos Myanmar Thailand ... e-cards Travel Guide - Vietnam Travel Guide Map of Vietnam Vietnam remains relatively undiscovered as a tourist destination with lush tropical forests and emerald rice paddies, mountain retreats, hill tribes and rich colonial architecture. It is a place where bustling commerce in the major cities, contrasts with the peaceful country life. The country is a long thin S-shaped country, stretching over 1,800 km from north to south and shares borders with Cambodia, Laos and China. It has 3,200 km of coastline bordering the Eastern Sea. With an area of 332,000 sq. km, Vietnam’s topography varies from coastal plains to mountain ranges. It consists of four main regions: the northeast with the Red River delta is low and flat, while the northwest part of the country, which borders China, is rugged and mountainous. The narrow central region is somewhat hilly, while the Mekong delta, in the far south, is a tropical lowland laced with scores of rivers and canals. The country's has a history of conflict with the Chinese, French and Americans. Independence was hard won in 1975 and today, after 20 over years of political stability, it is finally opening up to the world. Following the opening of the country in the late 80s, the first wave of travelers were the business travelers and backpackers. Now they are followed by more mainstream travelers who come to enjoy the beaches, the exotic hill tribes and numerous beach resorts. Vietnam offers a unique opportunity to see a country of traditional charm and rare beauty rapidly opening up to the outside world.

Vietnam Geography Covering and area of 329,600 square kilometres, Vietnam is some 7.5 % smaller than reunited Germany. But, like only a few other countries of similar size, it extends across two climatic zones - with a moderate climate in the North, comparable to that of Southern Europe, and a tropical climate in the South. Hanoi is, like Hongkong, located at a geographical latitude slightly to the South of Cairo or the Canary Islands, while Saigon is at a geographical latitude only slightly to the North of the Nigerian capital Lagos. Altogether the country stretches for more than 1,650 kilometres from North to South - which is roughly the distance from Hamburg to Athens. The coastline of Vietnam is about 3,000 kilometres long. To the West the country is bordered by Laos and Cambodia, to the North by China and to the East and South by the South China Sea. Geographically there are five different regions: 1. the northern mountain terrain with heights reaching above 3,000 metres; 2. the delta of the Red River (at which Hanoi is situated); 3. the

access to the means of production and exchange . Places of pleasure become sites where business is conducted (contracts signed, connections made), and the activity of consuming pleasure becomes the mark of this entrepreneurial class. Building on Judith Butler's notion of performative gender (1990), I argue that the forms of consumption and commodification of pleasure constitute performances of class and nation, predicated on a gender difference. Consuming women and their bodies allows men to not just construct themselves as men, but Vietnamese men of a certain class. THE "HOOKING ECONOMY" AND THE PLACE OF PLEASURE Background The economic model that was implemented in the North (the Democratic Republic of Vietnam) from the mid 1950s and nation-wide for a decade after the end of the war in 1975 sought to "construct socialism." This meant replacing private property with public ownership of the means of production in Soviet-style central planning of industrialization, controlling "prices, money, interest and exchange rates" detaching the "domestic market from the world market." (Le Duc Thuy, 1989:98). The state determined quantities, prices, purchasing and marketing. It supplied funds to the state enterprises, collected profits and absorbed losses. There emerged a two-tier price system as the state fixed prices and rationed goods for state wage-earners in what was called the "coupon regime" (

Resource Policy Support Initiative (REPSI), Vietnam It is the objective is to analyze in time the spatial relationships between the natural resources and their exploitation within a river catchment basin in Vietnam. Principally the relationships between the location and the extend of deforested areas and means of transport of timber, population number and ethnics, production system, topography, forest type, administrative boundaries etc will be analyzed. The institute of geography is working closely together with the Department of Agroecology and Environmental Science at Hanoi Agricultural University.
The change during the past 25 years in land-cover and land-use will be identified and mapped using historical and recent Landsat MSS, TM and ETM data. From these data it is possible to identify the main land cover types such as forest by type, quality and evolution, different agricultural praxis, water, exposed soil and bedrock, towns and to some extend roads and villages. Radar data from the Japanese satellite JERS are used to assess forest biomass and forest structure. This is important in order to distinguish between primary, secondary and degraded forests.
Spatial analyze of the natural resources and their exploitation
By analyzing the spatial relationship between natural resources and their exploitation, it is possible to: 1) identify areas that are subject to a certain concern, such as sustainability, management and conservation issues; 2) characterize conditions under which further exploitation is most likely to occur. Basically the results will help policy making in terms of providing information on: where does the exploitation take place and to what extend? How does this exploitation match current views on sustainability, resource management and policy? Where can we expect further exploitation to arise?
