L egend has it that Vietnam's origin lay in the harmonious union of lac Long Quan, King of the Sea, and Au Co, Princess of the Mountains. Real life was not so paradisical, as Vietnam's early historylike its recent historyis characterized by a nearly continuous struggle for autonomy. First came an entire millenium of Chinese domination, which was finally thrown off in the 9th century. External control was imposed once again in the 19th century, when Vietnam was occupied by the French.

Visitors entering Buddhist pagodas are expected to remove their shoes and it is considered impolite to point feet, especially the soles, at people or statues of the Buddha. Donations to the upkeep of temples are not expected, but are received gratefully. Permission should be asked before taking photographs of people or in places of worship. Social
The most appropriate manner of greeting is a gentle handshake and a smile. Though occasionally rigid, Vietnamese officials - such as the police - appreciate being treated in a firm, yet diplomatic manner. It is best to deal with misunderstandings with patience and good humour. Local people who offer assistance appreciate small gifts such as cigarette lighters, pens, foreign cigarettes, liquor, perfume and even shampoo. However, giving money to street beggars can lead to mob scenes as other beggars also attempt to impose upon such generosity. More Information Customs Festivals Government History ... Conquered by the armies of China's Han dynasty in 111 BC, it was not until 939 AD that the Vietnamese were able to expel the Chinese and begin a southward domination that, by the mid-18th century, had reached the Gulf of Siam. The 17th and 18th centuries were marked by the power struggles between feuding families in the north and south, as they attempted to control the largely ineffectual kings of the Le dynasty. Vietnam finally fell to French colonial rule in 1884, after fierce resistance. Integral to Vietnam's eventual independence was Ho Chi Minh, who was one of many who established the Viet Minh - a broad coalition of anti-French groups. When Japan ousted France from power in March 1945, the Viet Minh began to infiltrate the countryside from their mountain bases in the north. Following Japan's surrender, Viet Minh leaders announced the formation of a Democratic Republic of Vietnam, (DRV) and on September 2, 1945, proclaimed Vietnam's independence. The arrival of Allied forces, however, pushed Vietnam back into the hands of the French. After negotiations between the DRV and the French collapsed in December 1946, the Viet Minh attacked French forces in Hanoi and ignited an eight year war that culminated in the historic French military defeat at Dien Bien Phu in 1954.

History of Viet Nam
The pre-historic era could be dated back to over 23,000 years ago in Paleolithic Age, as the relics of Homo Erectus were found in the caves of Lang Son and Nghe An province. Gradual evolution emerged to Bronze Age when inhabitants produced bronze tools, and arms with the raising of domestic farms of buffaloes, oxen and pigs. Three cultural groups developed during this age: Pre-Dong Son Culture - lived in the North around Ma River, Ca River and Red River Delta Pre-Sa Hyun - live in Southern area of Central Vietnam
Those inhabited in Dong Nai River During Iron Age, only Pre-Dong son culture developed into Dong Son culture. Birth of Vietnam The first nation of Vietnam being recorded is the Van Lang Nation, founded by the ancient Viet race in the North. The most famous king is Hung King. In 3 B.C, another nation was found by Au Duong Vuong and named Au Lac Nation. The historical remain of Co Loa Citadel is the evidence. In Central Vietnam, another kingdom of Champa emerged from Sa Hyun culture around 2 B.C.

Vietnam History of Vietnam Vietnam's recorded history begins in 111 BC, when the Chinese conquered the northern part of the region and ruled for more than a thousand years. For the next 700 years, Vietnam was a collection of small, competing kingdoms (the northern and southern portions of the country vied for control even then) until the Nguyen dynasty ostensibly ruled most of Vietnam from 1802 to 1954. (The French colonized the country in 1887 and, except for a period during World War II when the Japanese invaded, controlled the emperors with varying degrees of success.) The last emperor, Bao Dai, lived in exile in France. The Viet Minh, a coalition of Communist and Nationalist groups, forced the French out in 1954, and the country was temporarily divided along the 17th parallel. The North consolidated under Communist leadership, and the South went to the Nationalists. An election was supposed to have been held, but the South, suspecting that the North would win, refused to participate. A few months later, the South declared independence.

Vietnam History...
Vietnamese history dates back 200 years before Christ. Their whole history was on fighting long and hard fought wars, then Revolutions. That's what gave them a lot of pride. America had new attacks that would help them but only for a little while. They had technology and they had helicopters that could get the job done and leave. The Vietnam had lived under the rule of China until A.D. 938. Over a dozen dynasties have ruled in Vietnam, and only three are considered "great." The first dynasty ever to rule was the Ly dynasty, in 1009-1225. Those rulers named Hanoi as the capital, but changing it in the year 1010. The country is mainly 85-90% Vietnamese, 3% Chinese, ethnic minorities include Muong, Thai, Meo, Khmer, Man, Cham, and other mountain tribes. before the war Vietnam had a lot of farm land. Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam.
After the war Vietnam has never been the same. With all of the deaths no one has gainded anything but pride and respect. Vietnam will be remembered for winning the Vietnam War. The Thing that will be remembered the most is the fall of America, to a third world country.

BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... VIETNAM In the first millennium BC, the Chinese empire expanded into what is now Vietnam. China's hold on the area was maintained, more or less, for about the next 1000 years. Europeans came to the region in the 1500s and by the early 19th century, France was the undisputed foreign force in Indochina. French colonial rule expanded, which ultimately led to popular discontent. In 1954, the Vietnamese under Ho Chi Minh defeated the French at Dienbienphu. By armistice, the country was divided into a northern, Communist entity and a south under the French-created king Bao Dai. Refugees poured into the south and in 1955, the king was dismissed as a result of elections held in October of that year. The Republic of Vietnam was declared soon after. The conflict between the north and the south soon widened into a quagmire that engulfed the United States, some of its allies, and neighboring parts of Southeast Asia. The withdrawal of the US military from the country in 1975, led to the entire country coming under communist control, which is how it remains today. The US has made some inroads into establishing a relationship with Vietnam but progress is slow and the memories still relatively fresh of the conflict that claimed so many lives over so many years.

    History of Vietnam
    Chinese Influence Endures Today

The Chinese have been a major part of Vietnam's history. In 221 BC, the emperor Qin Shihuangdi completed his conquest of neighboring states and created the first dynasty to rule over a united China. After Qin's death, the state collapsed, and General Zhao Tuo created his own kingdom out of the Qin's former southern provinces, naming the kingdom Nam Viet. In 111 BC, however, Chinese armies conquered Nam Viet; a series of unsuccessful uprisings against Chinese rule followed.
    Independence is Attained
Finally in AD 939, the dynamic leader Ngo Quyen took advantage of chaotic conditions in China and led a successful Vietnamese rebellion against the local occupation forces. The rise of the new state, known as Dai Viet (Great Viet), reflected the emergence of a strong sense of Vietnamese national identity, but retaining much of Chinese culture.
While the Vietnamese maintained their guard to the north, an area of equal and growing interest lay to the south. For centuries, the Vietnamese state had been restricted to its heartland in the Red River Valley and the mountainous perimeter. In the 15th century, Vietnamese forces captured the Cham capital, south of present-day Da Nang, and virtually destroyed the kingdom. For the next several generations, Vietnam continued its historic "march to the south,"gradually penetrating the marshy flatlands of the Mekong Delta. Thus began the Le Dynasty, which continued for more than 300 years.

    http://www.sadec.com/Profile/viet03.html
Political History The characteristic feature of Vietnam’s history is the country’s struggle against foreign occupation and intervention, for a good part of the last 2,000 years. The invaders were mostly but not exclusively the Han Chinese, who ruled Vietnam over 1,000 years from 111 BC to 938 AD. In mid 19th century, the French began intervening in the country’s affairs on a large scale, and they seized Saigon in early 1859. By 1886, France had conquered the whole country which they governed as a colony and incorporated into French Indochina despite resistance from the Vietnamese. Communist guerrillas under the leadership of Ho Chi Minh resisted French domination. Ho Chi Minh’s declaration of Vietnamese independence after WWII sparked violent confrontations with the French, culminating in the French military defeat at Dien Bien Phu in 1954. The Geneva Accords of 1954 temporarily divided Vietnam into 2 zones (the Communist north and the anti-Communist, US-supported south). Political and ideological opposition quickly turned to armed struggle, prompting the USA and other countries to commit combat troops in 1965. The Paris Peace Agreements, signed in 1973, provided an immediate cease-fire and signalled the withdrawal of US troops. Saigon eventually capitulated to the Communist forces on 30 April 1975. In July 1976, the nation was reunited, and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam was established. ..since then
